DOVER - George Scalley scored Dover's first two touchdowns of the game and Luciano Wilkinson scored the final three as the Tigers defeated Madison, 32-7, in a Morris County Youth Football League (MCYFL) varsity game at Hamilton Field here on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The win gave Dover a final regular-season record of 8-1 and a second-place finish in the National Conference's Hills Division of the MCYFL, one game behind division champ and unbeaten Jefferson.
Dover's only loss of the season was a 24-18 defeat at the hands of Jefferson in Week 8.
Madison (4-5) stunned the Tigers by scoring on its first possession, moving the ball 95 yards on eight plays and scoring on a 9-yard run and adding a conversion pass for a 7-0 lead.
Madison tried an onsides kick but Dover's James Quiles covered it for the Tigers and, on the first play from scrimmage, Scalley went 57 yards for a TD and Wilkinson ran for the extra point to tie the score at 7-7.
Dover forced Madison to punt on its next series and Scalley scored his second TD on a 55-yard punt return. Rondal Arnold's PAT run gave Dover a 14-7 lead, a lead that was never threatened.
The second quarter was all Wilkinson as he ran 76 yards for his first touchdown on a first-and-15 play after the Dover defense halted a Madison drive at the Tiger 29-yard line.
Wilkinson scored his second TD of the quarter on another first-down run, this one from 40 yards out on the last play of the half. Madison had reached midfield, but the Tigers' Derium Guirdy had a tackle for a loss and Joe Valdebenito had a fourth-down sack to put the ball back in Dover's hands.
Wilkinson scored Dover's final TD when he returned Madison's second-half kickoff 63 yards, making the score 32-7 and bringing out Dover's reserves for the rest of the game to preserve the victory.
The Tigers gained 332 yards on offense with Wilkinson rushing only twice for 116 yards and and Scalley once for 57 yards. Christian Coretes, Anthony Rivera, Jason Pinales and James Quiles added a combined for the rest of the Tigers' yardage.
On defense, Wilkinson had eight tackles (one for a loss) and intercepted a pass from his spot at linebacker. Scalley had four tackles, including one for a loss.
Guirdy finished with four tackles with three of them for losses; Valdebenito had four tackles, one a sack; Lewis Rodriguez, Arnold and Rivera each had three tackles with Rivera getting one for a loss; Daniel Leana had a tackle and a sack; and Anthony Sterling, Wilson Guapache and Pinales each finished with one tackle.
Tigers bow to Jefferson for first loss of season
DOVER - A 24-point second-quarter outburst by Jefferson was too much for Dover to overcome as the Tigers lost their first Morris County Youth Football League (MCYFL) game of the season, a 24-18 decision to the Falcons in a game played at Jefferson on Saturday, Nov. 1.
After a scoreless first period, Jefferson (8-0) struck for two quick TDs - a 6-yard run after a long drive and the second a 40-yard run with a recovered fumble. Both two-point PAT kicks were good and the Falcons had a 16-0 lead.
The Tigers (7-1) cut into the lead when George Scalley scored on a 2-yard run to cap a 55-yard drive in only three plays - all runs by Scalley.
Jefferson closed out the second quarter onslaught with a 48-yard scoring pass and converted yet another two-point PAT to take a 24-6 lead into the halftime break.
The third period was also scoreless and Dover scored twice in the fourth period and had possession late in the game before running out of downs.
Scalley scored his second touchdown of the game, capping a five-play, 43-yard drive with a 4-yard TD run.
On the kickoff following Scalley?s TD, Dover?s Derium Guirdys recovered an onsides kick on the Jefferson 47-yard line and the Tigers needed but four plays to score with quarterback Rondal Arnold sneaking in from the 1-yard line.
Dover then held Jefferson to a three-and-out to regain possession with two minutes to play. The Tigers - with no timeouts left - couldn?t move the chains this time, however, and they ran out of downs as their comeback bid fell short.
Scalley finished with 147 yards on 14 rushes and Luciano Wilkinson rushed three times for 42 yards as Dover finished with 212 offensive yards on 27 plays. The defense allowed Jefferson only 120 yards on 25 plays.
Guirdys had a team-high five tackles and one sack to go with his onsides kick recovery.
Wilkinson and Scalley each had four tackles with two for losses from their linebacker spots; Zack Zuzock and Arnold each had two solo tackles; and Anthony Rivera, Christian Cortes, Jason Pinales, Lewis Rodriguez and Joel Valdebenito each finished with one tackle.
Unbeaten Dover stops Hopatcong, 14-0
DOVER - George Scalley's two touchdown runs and Luciano Wilkinson's two one-point conversion runs were the only points in the game as the unbeaten Dover Tigers beat the Hopatcong Warriors, 14-0, in a Morris County Youth Football League (MCYFL) game played at Hamilton Field on Sunday, Oct. 25, night.
The victory was Dover's seventh of the season and sets up a battle for first place with equally unbeaten (7-0) Jefferson at Jefferson on Sunday, Nov. 1. The winner will move into first place in the Morris Division of the American Conference with the losing team a game back with one more week to go in the regular season.
In Sunday's game, Dover took the opening kickoff and moved downfield only to throw an interception on a fourth-and-11, giving Hopatcong the ball on its own 12-yard line. Hopatcong got two first downs before punting, giving back the ball to the Tigers on their own 29-yard line.
On the first play on the new set of downs, Scalley ran 71 yards for his first touchdown and Wilkinson ran for the PAT and a Dover 7-0 lead.
Hopatcong took the ensuing kickoff and gave the ball back to Dover when it failed to convert on a fourth-and-2 on the Hopatcong 45-yard line.
This time, it took the Tigers four plays to hit pay dirt, with Scalley notching his second TD of the game on a 4-yard run and Wilkinson again converting for the final point of the game.
Neither side threatened in the second half as the combination of solid defenses and a slippery turf kept both teams away from the endzone.
Scalley finished with 98 yards on six rushes while Wilkinson added 94 yards on 11 rushes. Dover's offense gained 193 yards overall in 28 plays.
The Tiger defense allowed but 83 yards on 35 plays.
Scalley led all tacklers with seven from his spot at linebacker; Rondal Arnold and Joel Valdebenito each had three tackles; Jason Pinales, Daniel Leana and Anthony Sterling each finished with two; and Deriam Guridy and Christian Cortes each had one.
Tigers Stop Junior Knights, 33-6
DOVER - The Dover Tigers remained unbeaten and stayed in a tie for first place in the Morris County Youth Football League's Morris Division of the American Conference with a 33-6 victory over the Junior Knights n Saturday, Oct. 17, at Bill Lewis Field in Wharton.
Dover and Jefferson - which beat Madison, 28-0 - remain in a first-place tie with identical 6-0 records.
George Scalley led the way for the Tigers with four touchdowns, three on runs of 5, 30 and 1 yards and one when he ran back an intercepted pass 60 yards for another touchdown.
Luciano Wilkinson opened the scoring for Dover with a 25-yard TD run in the first period and then the Junior Knights (3-3) surprised the Tigers with a 52-yard pass and run play for a TD that tied the score at 6-6.
Scalley capped a four-play, 92-yard drive with his first TD and then caught a pass from quarterback Rondal Arnold for the extra point to give the Tigers the lead for good at 13-6. Scalley's interception return for a TD gave Dover a 19-6 halftime lead.
Scalley scored the only two TDs in the second half on third-quarter runs with Arnold running over for the PAT after each score.
Scalley finished with 114 yards rushing on only eight carries as the Dover offense gained 221 yards on only 16 plays.
Wilkinson rushed only once - his 25-yard TD - and Arnold, Christian Cortes and Jason Pinales each had three rushes for a combined 35 yards.
On defense, the Tigers allowed only 78 yards on 29 plays with Scalley leading the way with two interceptions and five tackles, including one for a loss.
Joel Valdebenito and Lewis Rodriguez each had three tackles with one of Rodriguez' stops in the Junior Knight backfield for a loss. Wilkinson and Pinales each finished with two tackles.
Arnold had an interception; James Quiles had a sack; Derium Guirdy had one tackle for a loss; and Anthony Rivera and Daniel Leana each had one tackle.
In the sub-varsity games, Dover beat the Junior Knights in the junior varsity game, 32-0; and the Junior Knights won the peewee game, 20-6.
Tigers improve to 5-0 with 19-8 win
DOVER - The Dover Tigers of the Morris County Youth Football League (MCYFL) were scored upon for the first time this season ... also for the first time, the Tigers were forced to play from behind ... but for the fifth time in five outings, they won, posting a 19-8 victory over the Boonton Grayhawks at Hamilton Field on Saturday, Oct. 10.
The win leaves Dover and Jefferson with 5-0 records and tied for first place in the Morris Division of the American Conference of the MCYFL. Dover is at the Junior Knights (3-2) and Jefferson visits Madison (4-1) this weekend.
The Tigers also played most of the game without starting quarterback Rondal Arnold was injured on the team's first drive and did not return to the game.
"We were tested today ... we lost Rondal for the game and had to come from behind for the first time," said assistant coach Curtis Cheatham after the game. "But the players withstood the challenge and showed great determination, especially in the second half."
Dover scored first when backup QB Jason Pinales plunged in from the 2-yard line, moments after Arnold was injured when he was brought down two yards short of the endzone after a 58-yard run.
Dover's missed run attempt for the extra point proved crucial when Boonton went on a second-quarter 10-play, 54-yard scoring drive and added the 2-point PAT kick in the to take an 8-6 lead that became the halftime score.
Luciano Wilkinson put Dover ahead for good with a 57-yard run in the third period and George Scalley added an insurance TD in the fourth when he scored on a 10-yard run to cap a five-play, 6-yard drive. Wilkinson ran in the PAT after Scalley TD for Dover's only conversion of the game.
Scalley finished with 88 yard rushing on eight carries; Wilkins gained 71 yards on five rushing attempts; and Arnold had one run for 58 yards. The Tigers had 205 yards of offense on 26 plays.
On defense, Scalley had eight tackles (three for losses) and an interception; Deriam Guirdy had seven tackles, a fumble recovery and a sack; and Wilkinson finished with six tackles (two for losses) to lead a defense that allowed but 68 yards on 33 plays.
Also, Joel Valdebenito had four tackles; Luis Rodriguez finished with two tackles and one pass knockdown; Christian Cortes, Daniel Leana, Jeffrey Miller and Pinales each had one tackle.
In the junior varsity game, Dover improved to 4-1 with a 20-9 victory over Boonton. In the PeeWee game, Boonton beat Dover, 27-7.
Wilkinson 3 TDs spark unbeaten Dover
DOVER - Running back Luciano Wilkinson rushed for three touchdowns as the unbeaten and unscored upon Dover Tigers varsity improved to 4-0 by beating the Hanover Township Tigers, 32-0, in a Morris County Youth Football League game played at Hamilton Field here on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Wilkinson scored on runs of 62, 8 and 57 yards and finished the game with 140 yards rushing on only four carries as Dover scored on its first five possessions of the game.
Quarterback Rondal Arnold scored on a 49-yard run; running back George Scalley scored from five yards out; and Scalley also ran for two 1-point conversions to complete the scoring.
Scalley rushed for 55 yards on six carries and Arnold rushed only once during the game as Dover finished the game with 247 yards worth of offense on only 19 plays.
The defense allowed only 41 yards on 29 plays in recording its fourth shutout in as many games.
On defense, nose guard Daniel Leana and linebacker Scalley led the team in tackles with four each with three of Scalley's stops resulting in Hanover losses.
Cornerback James Quiles had three tackles, an interception and forced a fumble; linebackers Deriam Guirdy and Jason Pinales each had three tackles and Arnold also had three stops from his cornerback spot.
Wilkinson finished with two tackles and recovered a fumble from his outside linebacker spot; defensive ends Joel Valdebenito and Wilson Guarpacha each had two tackles with one of Valdebenito?s resulting in a loss of yardage; and defensive end Luis Rodriguez had a tackle and a quarterback pressure.
Notes: Wilkinson had a 63-yard punt return for a touchdown nullified by a penalty ... Scalley had a 50-yard TD run from scrimmage called back by a penalty ... the Tigers junior varsity team beat Hanover, 34-12, to improve to 3-1 ... the peewees remained unbeaten in four games with a 16-12 win. ...
