Faccenda, Kenny RBIs in 7th beat Warriors in opener

DENVILLE - The Denville Bruins 12U baseball team opened its 2011 Montville Travel League schedule by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning to defeat the Wayne Valley Warriors, 2-1, in a game played at Barbour Road Field in Wayne on Sunday, March 27.
Wayne Valley scored on a suicide squeeze in the fifth inning and took that 1-0 lead into the seventh inning where Denville scored both its runs when Tyler Faccenda doubled home the tying run and was eventually forced home with the winning run when Will Kenny drew a one-out, bases-loaded walk-off walk..
Richard Boyle got the winning rally started with a one-out walk, stole second and tied the game at 1-1 when he scored on Faccenda's long double into the left-center field gap.
Faccenda took third on a wild pitch and, after Conner Walsh walked on four pitches and stole second with no throw, Owen Roche tried a safety squeeze that he beat out for a hit but, since the ball went down the third base line, Faccenda was not sent home.
Kenny came to the plate with bases loaded and one out and worked the count to 3-1 before watching ball four go past him to bring in Faccenda with the winning run.
The game was played using high school baseball rules on a field that featured a mount 50 feet from home plate and bases 70 feet apart.
"This was the first time these players played where runners were allowed to take leads and steal at any time and pitchers had to hold runners on," said Faccenda after the game. "They adapted and played good, solid baseball.
"We told them the game was still about pitching, catching, throwing, hitting and running and told them to let their baseball instincts take over. We got strong pitching and solid defense and did a lot of the little things you have to do to win games."
Faccenda pointed out that left fielder Justin Giacobbe's backing up third on a stolen base saved a run when he was in "... perfect position to keep a run from being scored on an errant throw."
Faccenda, Boyle and Walsh shared the pitching duties. Faccenda started and pitching three innings of scoreless hitless ball with four strikeouts and only one walk; Boyle pitched two innings and gave up one run (earned) on one hits while striking out three and walking three; Walsh was the winning pitcher, working the last two scoreless innings while giving up three hits, striking out four and walking one.
Faccenda and Roche each has two hits to spark the Denville five-hit attack. Faccenda finished 2-for-3 with a double, single, RBI and a run scored and Roche was 2-for-3.
Kenny was 1-for-2 with his bases-loaded walk and Boyle finished 0-for-2, but drew the walk in the seventh and scored the Bruins' first run.
Next up for the Bruins is a 10 a.m. game on Sunday, April 10, against the Montclair Bulldogs at Kaveny Road Field in Montclair.
