2011 SEASON Valleyview Coach Plumb knew he had chance for strong team -
DENVILLE - Valleyview Middle School baseball coach Sean Plumb knew he "... had a chance for a strong team" after he conducted his tryouts earlier this spring for the 2011 squad. "We were strong up the middle with eighth-graders back from last year and this was the best defensive team I've had in six years here," said Plumb days after his team completed the program's first unbeaten season with a 13-0 record by winning the Greater Morris County Junior School Coaches Association post-season playoff championship. "This was also the best group of pitchers I have ever had ... we did not have guys who overpowered everybody, but they threw strikes and knew the defense would be there for them." Valleyview pitching did not allow a run in three playoff games - Will Pauls threw a five-hit shutout in beating Heritage Middle School of Livingston, 3-0, in the title game; Pauls four-hit Bernardsville, 4-0, in the semifinal round; and Christian Fuentes pitched four innings and Luke Luzzi finished to combine for a five-inning, one-hit 12-0 victory over Mountain Lakes in the first round. "The team played very well in the playoffs, of course, but there were two other victories during the regular season that stood out, too," Plumb said. "We beat East Hanover, 1-0, with a run in the top of the seventh and we came from behind to beat Brooklawn, 10-8, in 10 innings. "East Hanover was big because this was a team we had struggled against very season since I have been here. "And The Brooklawn victory was special because we were down 6-0 in the first inning and kept battling back before winning it in extra innings ... this showed the character of this team - they could have easily given up, but they kept fighting." Asked to signal out his key players, Plumb offered the following: "I'm not big on MVP or individual awards ... I believe everybody on the roster has a role on the team and the team was successful because everyone did his part ... we had a lot of players step up and have big games for us when we needed them." Plumb is looking to build on this season and to establish a tradtion of winning baseball at the school. "We have some good players coming to Valleyview in the next few years and I'm hoping this season will be the start of something big for Valleyview baseball," Plumb said. "I'm hoping the next couple of years we can build on what we did this year." As for the 2011 team? "This group is special," came the quick reply. "It is not easy going undefeated and that and the championship is something of which these players can be proud. "I know I sure am proud of these boys."
