DENVILLE - The St. Mary's varsity girls basketball team, which finished in second place in its division in the Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League's regular season, reached the championship game of the league's post-season playoffs where it lost a 53-36 decision to St. Elizabeth in a game played at Mount Olive Middle School in Mount Olive on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011.
Rachel Mills led St. Mary's with 12 points, five rebounds and six steals. Marchella Franklin finished with seven points; Mary Shrek had six points and five rebounds; Katie Ford had three points; and Stella Johnson, Cassie Espeut, Jessica Onoroti and Kristen Onoroti each had two points. The Onoroti sisters each had five rebounds and Kresten had four steals.
St. Mary's reached the championship game with a 28-18 semifinal-round victory over St. Catherine of Mountain Lakes at the Mount Olive Middle School on Saturday, Feb. 19.
Franklin led the St. Mary's scoring with 10 points; Rachel Mills had seven points, five rebounds and eight steals; Jessica Onoroti had six points and 10 rebounds; Kristen Onoroti had two points and seven rebounds; Erica Elliot had two points; and Mary Shrek finished with one point and 10 rebounds.

Johnson's 14, Mills' 11 spark St. Mary's, 40-25
DENVILLE - Stella Johnson scored 14 points and Rachel Mills added 11 when the St. Mary's girls varsity basketball team beat St. Jude of Budd Lake, 40-25, in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at Mount Olive Middle School in Mount Olive on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011.
The game marked the end of St. Mary's regular-season schedule and the 8-2 club is now waiting word as to where it will be seeded in the post-season tournament that is scheduled to begin Saturday, Feb. 12.
St. Mary's jumped out to a 15-3 lead after one quarter of play and was never headed, led by the solid play of Johnson on both ends of the floor. Johnson added 14 rebounds to finish with a double-double and she also finished with four assists, four steals and three blocked shots.
Mills also had four steals, two assists and two rebounds.
Jessica Onoroti finished with five points; Kristen Onoroti and Mary Schrek each had three points; Frankie Perna scored two points; and Marchella Franklin and Molly Heller each finished with one point to round out St. Mary's scoring for the game.
Schrek finished with five rebounds and a blocked shot; Cassie Espeut had three rebounds and two steals; Erica Elliot had four rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot; Katie Ford and Kristen Onoroti each had two rebounds; and the Onoroti sisters each had two steals.

St. Mary's 21-pt. 2nd quarter helps beat Assumption
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's varsity girls travel basketball team, a point down after one quarter of play, went on a 21-5 second-quarter blitz on the way to a 46-18 win over Assumption of Moristown in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at Assumption on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011.
Trailing 8-7 after the first quarter of play, St. Mary's used its second-quarter outburst to build a 28-13 halftime lead, a lead that was never threatened the rest of the game.
Stella Johnson led the team in scoring with 13 points, she also added four rebounds, one assists, one steal and a blocked shot.
Rachel Mills followed with eight points and Marchella Franklin and Krysten Onoroti each finished with six points. Mary Shrek and Jessica Onoroti each scored four points; Frankie Perna and Katie Ford each added two points; and Erica Elliot completed the scoring for St. Mary's with a free throw.
Mills had a team-high six rebounds while Ford finished with three; Franklin and each of the Onoroti sisters had two; and Molly Heller, Cassie Espeut, Shrek and Elliot each had one.
Franklin had a team-high five steals and Krysten Onoroti had four; Mills and Franklin each had four assists; and Franklin and Krysten Onoroti each finished with a blocked shot.
Next up for St. Mary's is St. Jude of Budd Lake in a contest that will be played on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Mount Olive Middle School at 7:45 p.m.

St. Mary's defense key in win over St. Therese
DENVILLE -- St. Mary's girls varsity travel basketball team completely shut down St. Therese for the first half and went on to a 40-12 victory in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at St. Therese in Succasunna on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011.
St. Mary's (6-2) held a 12-0 lead after the first period and led 27-0 at the half before St. Therese got on the board with 12 second-half points.
Rachel Mills, Jessica Onoroti and Stella Johnson each scored in double figures for St. Mary's as Mills finished with 14 points, Onoroti had 11 and Johnson added 10.
Kristen Onoroti and Erica Elliot each had two points and Frankie Perna added a free throw to complete the scoring for the winners.
Johnson finished with a team-high nine rebounds; Kristen Onoroti had seven and Jessica Onoroti had six. Kassie Espeut (2), Erica Elliot (2), Molly Heller (1), Katie Ford (1) and Mills (1) also contributed to the rebound total.
Mills, Johnson and Jessica Onoroti each had three assists and Kristin Onoroti and Espeut each had two. Mills had a team-high five steals and Kristen Onoroti finished with three. Johnson had four blocked shots while Mary Shreck, Ford and both of the Onoroti sisters each finished with one.
St. Mary's next game is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 30, at Assumption of Morristown at 1 p.m.

St. Mary's falls to St. Elizabeth late charge
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's CYO varsity girls basketball team carried a one-point lead into the final quarter of play against St. Elizabeth but couldn't hold off a late charge by the visitors and lost a 44-41 decision in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game at St. Mary's on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011.
The loss was the second in a row for St. Mary's (5-2), who lost to St. Elizabeth a week ago by a 44-40 score.
In Sunday's game, St. Mary's fought back from a two-point first-quarter deficit to take a two-point halftime lead. St. Elizabeth outscored St. Mary's 12-11 in the third quarter to cut Denville's lead to one point going into the fourth quarter where St. Elizabeth pulled away for its three-point victory.
"The entire team played hard," said head coach Susan Mills after the game. "We gave them a good run but we just ran out of time at the end."
Rachel Mills and Stella Johnson led St. Mary's in scoring with Mills scoring 13 points and Johnson adding 12. The Onoroti sisters - Jessica and Kristen - each scored six points; and Mary Schrek and Frankie Perna each added two points to complete the scoring for St. Mary's.
Schrek had a team-high 10 rebounds while Johnson and Mills each finished with eight. Kristen Onoroti had six rebounds; Marcella Franklin and Jessica Onoroti each had three; Kassie Espeut had two rebounds; and Erica Elliot finished with one.
Mills had a team-high four assists; Johnson and Kristen Onoroti each had three; Franklin had two; and Katie Ford and Schrek each had one.

Late rally falls short as St. Mary's loses first game
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's girls varsity travel basketball team put on a furious fourth-quarter rally but still lost its first game of the season, a 44-40 loss to St. Elizabeth in an Upper Morris CYO Basketball League game played at Mount Olive Middle School in Mount Olive on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011.
St. Mary's - now 5-1 on the season - won't have to wait too long to meet St. Elizabeth again as the two teams will square off in a 1 p.m. game at St. Mary's on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011.
St. Mary's trailed 18-10 after one quarter, 30-19 at the half and 42-25 at the end of three quarters before switching to a zone press that proved effective and enabled St. Mary's to close the game with a 15-2 fourth-quarter run that fell four points short.
Stella Johnson led the St. Mary's scoring with 17 points and Rachel Mills had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Kristen Onoroti finished with seven points; Mary Shrek had four points; and Katie Ford had two to complete the scoring for St. Mary's.

DENVILLE - Stella Johnson was all over the stat charts when the St. Mary's girls varsity basketball team rode a 16-4 second-quarter scoring outburst to defeat St. Jude of Budd Lake, 35-22, in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at the Parsippany PAL in Parsippany on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2011.
St. Mary's held a 5-4 lead after the first period but moved out to a 21-8 lead at the half after outscoring St. Jude 16-4 in the second quarter. Each team scored 14 points in the second half to enable St. Mary's to nail down its 13-point victory.s
Johnson led all scorers with 13 points, pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, had five steals, three assists, and blocked a team-high five shots.
Rachel Mills finished with nine points, four rebounds, five steals and three assists; Jessica Onorati had four points, seven steals and three blocked shots; Kristen Onorati finished with three points and three rebounds; Erica Elliot had two points and four rebounds; and Kassie Espeut and Frankie Perna each scored two points to round out the scoring for St. Mary's.
Katie Ford added two steals, a rebound and an assist ... Mary Schreck blocked two shots and added two rebounds and a steal ... Marchella Franklin was held out of the game with a sore ankle.
The St. Mary's girls next game is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 9, against St. Elizabeth of Flanders at the Mount Olive Middle School in Mount Olive. Game time is 6:15 p.m.

Johnson leads way in win over Assumption
DENVILLE - Stella Johnson scored 10 points to lead a balanced attack when the St. Mary's varsity girls basketball team beat Assumption of Morristown, 45-11, in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at St. Mary's on Sunday, Dec. 19.
St. Mary's led 9-3 after one quarter and then its defense stepped it up another notch in the second quarter by holding Assumption scoreless as St. Mary's took a commanding 22-3 lead at the halftime break. St. Mary's then outscored Assumption 23-8 in the second half to secure the victory.
Johnson’s team-high 10 points included two 3-point field goals. Jessica Onoroti finished with nine points; Mary Shrek, Krisen Onoroti and Frankie Perna each scored six points; Kassie Espeut had four points; and Rachel Mills and Erica Elliot had two points to round out the scoring for St. Mary's.
Shrek led the team in rebounds with seven while Johnson had five and Espeut added four. Johnson finished with four assists while Kristen Onoroti had three; Johnson also had a team-high in steals with four while Kristen Onoroti had three; and Mills and Johnson each blocked two shots.
St. Mary's next game is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, against St. Jude of Budd Lake at the Parsippany PAL at 4:15 p.m.

St. Mary's defeat Sacred Heart, 56-18
DENVILLE - Stella Johnson, Marcella Franklin and Kristen Onorati each scored 10 points when the unbeaten St. Mary's varsity girls beat Sacred Heart, 56-18, in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at St. Mary's on Sunday, Dec. 12.
St. Mary's (3-0) broke out to a 15-0 lead after one period of play and extended the lead to 25-9 at the half to put away the game for good.
Jessica Onorati added eight points; Mary Schreck had six points; Frankie Perna finished with five points; Katie Ford scored three points; and Rachel Mills and Kassie Espeut each scored two points to round out the Denville scoring.
Jessica Onorati had a team-high eight rebounds; Schreck added six; Mills had five and Ford and Johnson each had three. Mills had a team-high six assists and Perna added three. Franklin finished with five steals and five blocks. Mills, Ford and Kristen Onorati each had two steals.
St. Mary's faces Assumption of Morristown on Sunday, Dec. 19, in a 1 p.m. game at St. Mary's.

Balanced offense, solid 'D' lead to 49-27 win
DENVILLE - A strong defense and a balanced scored attack sparked the St. Mary's varsity girls to a 49-27 victory over St. Therese (Succasunna) in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at St. Mary's here on Sunday, Dec. 5.
St. Mary's (2-0) led 12-6 after one quarter and 26-12 at the half before outscoring St. Therese 23-15 in the second half to nail down the victory.
Jessica Onorati led St. Mary's in scoring with 12 points with Stella Johnson finishing with 10 and Rachel Mills and Kristen Onorati each adding nine points. Katie Ford, Kassie Espeut and Marcella Franklin each chipped in with three points.
As a team, the St. Mary's defense finished the game with 17 steals and five blocked shots. Mills had seven steals and Kristen Onorati and Franklin each had four with Mary Schreck and Jessica Onorati each finished with one. Johnson had a team-high three blocked shots while Jessica Onorati and Franklin each had one.
Johnson had a team-high six rebounds; Schreck had five; Mills finished with three and Jessica Onorati had two. Mills finished with four assists; Franklin and Kristen Onorati each had three; and Johnson added two.
St. Mary's goes for win No. 3 on Sunday, Dec. 12, when it plays host to Sacred Heart of Rockaway in a 2:30 p.m. game here in Denville.

St. Mary's wins opener as Mills, Johnson lead way
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's varsity girls basketball team opened its CYO season on a winning note by coming from behind to defeat St. Catherine (Mtn. Lakes), 45-25, in an Upper Morris County CYO League game played at the Parsippany PAL in Parsippany on Sunday, Nov. 28.
Trailing 8-4 after the first quarter of play, St. Mary's outscored St. Catherine 12-4 in the second quarter to take a 16-12 lead into the halftime break. St. Mary's increased its lead to eight with a 13-9 run in the third period and then outscored St. Catherine 16-4 in the final period to establish the 20-point margin of victory.
Rachel Mills scored a game-high 22 points and Stella Johnson added 14 to lead the St. Mary's offense. Johnson had a solid game on both sides of the floor by adding seven assists, seven rebounds and six steals. Mills had four assists, four rebounds and four steals.
Katie Ford chipped in with four points and one rebound; Mary Schreck finished with two points and a rebound; Jessica Onorati had two points, an assist and a rebound; Marcella Franklin finished with one point, two assists, two rebounds and a steal; and Kristen Onorati had one rebound and two steals for the winners.
"We were able to get all 11 players into the game," said head coach Susan Mills after the game. "And all 11 girls contributed and played very hard."
St. Mary's faces St. Therese (Succasunna) next in a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, Dec. 5, at St. Mary's.

St. Mary's to open against St. Catherine
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's of Denville varsity girls CYO basketball team will open its 2010-11 schedule in the Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League on Sunday, Nov. 28, with a home game against St. Catherine of Sienna (Mountain Lakes).
The head coach of the team is Susan Mills and the assistant coaches are Erik Franklin and Mary Johnson.
The team plays a 10-game regular-season schedule against St. Therese (Succasunna), Sacred Heart (Rockaway Borough), Assumption (Morristown), St. Jude (Budd Lake) and St. Elizabeth (Flanders).
