with 58-55 playoff loss

. DENVILLE - The St. Mary's boys varsity basketball team saw its 2010-11 season come to a close when St. Catherine of Mountain Lakes held on for a 58-55 victory in a Upper Morris CYO Basketball League first-round playoff game held at Holy Family School in Florham Park on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011.
No. 2 seed St. Catherine was able to break through No. 3 seed St. Mary's full-court pressure enough in the first quarter to take a three-point lead. The lead grew by a point at the end of the next two quarters and St. Catherine took a 44-39 advantage into the final period.
"We came back at them a little, but they always held us off," said St. Mary's co-coach Mark Chegwidden after the game. "It was a close game and a good game, but we never were able to overcome that early lead."
Michael Chapman had a game-high 26 points to lead St. Mary's. Jake Voelkner and Brian Chegwidden each added eight points; Ryan Chegwidden had six points; Luidgi Faubert finished with three points; and Nicholas Mills and Joe LaRiccia each had two points to complete the Denville scoring.

St. Mary's falls to unbeaten (13-0) Our Lady
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's varsity boys basketball team stayed close to unbeaten (13-0) Our Lady of Mercy/Notre Dame of Whippany for the first half before running into some ball-control problems in the third quarter en route to a 58-46 loss to OLM/ND in the final regular-season game of the Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League on Sunday, Feb. 6, at the St. Mary's Prep gym here.
St. Mary's (9-4) trailed by two at the end of one period and by four at the half before Our Lady went on a 20-point third-quarter scoring spree to take a nine-point lead into the final quarter of play.
"It was a well-played game on the part of both teams, for the most part," said co-coach Mark Chegwidden after the game. "We just got a little careless with the ball in the third period and made some turnovers and Our Lady - being a good team - took advantage of them and turned them into easy baskets.
"They will go into this weekend's playoffs as the No. 1 seed. We'll find out the schedule and our seed later this week, but it looks as if we'll be the No. 3 seed behind St. Catherine's of Mountain Lakes."
St. Mary's was led in scoring by Michael Chapman, who scored 13 points. Jake Voelkner added nine points; Brian Chegwidden finished with eight; Ryan Chegwidden had six points; Luidgi Faubert scored four points; and Jake Pietrucha, Nicholas Mills and Joe LaRiccia each had two points.

St. Mary's falls to Magnificat, 55-43
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's varsity boys basketball travel team suffered through a 4-for-18 performance from the free-throw line and it resulted in a 55-43 loss to Magnificat of Kinnelon in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at the Mount Olive Middle School on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011.
"Magnificat led the entire game," said co-coach Mark Chegwidden after the game. "They outrebounded us and they got a lot of baskets on uncontested fast-break layups ... and our free throw shooting didn't help us, either."
Magnificat led 16-13 after one quarter and 31-23 at the half before outscoring St. Mary's (9-3) by a 24-20 margin in the second half.
Nicholas Mills led St. Mary's in scoring with 16 points. Michael Chapman added nine points; Ryan Chegwidden added eight points; Luidgi Faubert and Joe LaRiccia each had four points and Jake Voelkner finished with two points to complete the St. Mary's scoring.
St. Mary's will attempt to get back on the winning track on Sunday, Feb. 6, when it faces Our Lady of Mercy/Notre Dame of Whippany in a 1 p.m. game at St. Mary's Prep gym.

St. Mary's nets season-low 31 in loss to St. Catherine's
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's varsity boys basketball team was held to its lowest point total of the season when it lost a 37-31 decision to St. Catherine's (Mountain Lakes) in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at Mountain Lakes High School on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011.
St. Catherine's took an 11-6 lead after one period of play and maintained that edge with a 19-14 halftime lead, but St. Mary's rallied in the third period to send the game into the fourth quarter tied at 25-25.
A combination of St. Catherine's outside shooting and zone defense caught up to St. Mary's in the final quarter, however, and St. Catherine's outscored St. Mary's 12-6 to seal their six-point margin of victory.
Nicholas Mills scored 14 points to lead St. Mary's (9-2) in scoring. Ryan Chegwidden added seven points; Brian Chegwidden had four; Jake Voelkner finished with three points; Luidgi Faubert scored two points; and Dillon Sinegra had a free throw to complete the St. Mary's scoring.
St. Mary's will try to get back on the winning track on Sunday, Jan. 30, when it faces Magnificat of Kinnelon in a 6:15 p.m. game at Mount Olive Middle School in Mount Olive.

St. Mary's 33-point 3rd period decides, 66-40
DENVILLE. - The St. Mary's varsity boys basketball team broke open a close game with a 33-point third quarter and went on to defeat St. Mark's (Long Valley), 66-40, in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at St. Mary's on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011.
The victory was the ninth out of 10 games for St. Mary's.
After a back-and-forth first half that ended with St. Mary's holding a 25-23 lead, the Denville club went into a full-court pressure defense that created turnovers and fast-break baskets that led to its 33-point quarter and produced a commanding 26-point lead going into the final quarter.
St. Mary's Michael Chapman, who finished with a game-high 16 points, scored 14 of his points in the big third quarter to spark the Denville attack.
Nicholas Mills and Brian Chegwidden each scored 12 points for St. Mary's; Matthew Muoio added nine points; Dillon Sinegra finished with six points; Joseph LaRiccia added five points; and Ryan Chegwidden, Luidgi Faubert and Jack Pietrucha each scored two points to complete the St. Mary's offensive production.
St. Mary's next game is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011 against St. Catherine of Mountain Lakes at Mountain Lakes High School at 4:15 p.m.

St. Maryh's 2nd-half rally tops Assumption, 51-26
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's boys varsity basketball team overcame a low-scoring first half with 32 second-half points and went on to record a 51-26 victory over Assumption of Morristown in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at the Mount Olive Middle School in Mount Olive on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011.
St. Mary's (8-2) took a 9-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and moved out to a 19-14 lead at the half before outscoring Assumption 32-9 in the second half to seal the victory.
St. Mary's had eight of its nine players score points and shot 11-for-15 from the free throw line.
Ryan Chegwidden and MIchael Chapman led a balanced St. Mary's attack with Chegwidden scoring 11 points and Chapman adding 10.
Luidgi Faubert finished with eight points; Nicholas Mills scored six points; Jack Pietrucka and Dillon Sinegra each had five points; Brian Chegwidden finished with four points; and Joseph LaRiccia had a free throw to complete the scoring for St. Mary's.
St. Mary's next game is scheduled for home at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16, against St. Mark's of Long Valley.

Our Lady hands St. Mary's first loss of season
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's boys varsity basketball team was held to its lowest point total of the season in losing a 56-44 decision to Our Lady of Mercy/Notre Dame (Whippany) in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League battle of unbeatens played at Whippany on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011.
St. Mary's (7-1) trailed 18-13 after one period and 32-21 at the half and could get no closer in the second when Our Lady (8-0) outscored the Denville club, 24-23, in the final two periods.
Michael Chapman led St. Mary's with 16 points while Ryan Chegwidden added 10. Brian Chegwidden finished with eight points; Nicholas Mills had four points; and Jake Voelkner, Luidgi Faubert and Matthew Muoio each had two to round out the St. Mary's scoring.
St. Mary's hopes to get back on the winning track on Sunday, Jan. 9, with a 1:15 game against Assumption of Morristown at the Mount Olive Middle School in Mount Olive.

St. Mary's wins St. Therese Christmas Tournament
DENVILLE - A 25-point outburst in the final quarter sealed the game and the tournament title as the unbeaten St. Mary's boys varsity basketball team defeated St. Therese, 63-34, in the championship game of the St. Therese Christmas Tournament at the St. Therese Catholic School gym in Succasunna on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011.
St. Mary's (7-0) held a 15-8 lead after one quarter of play but St. Therese closed the gap to two points at the half as St. Mary's took a 26-24 lead into the second half.
St. Mary's went on a 12-4 third-period run to boost their lead back to 10 points and then put away the game for good with its 25-6 outburst in the final quarter of play.
Michael Champman had a team-high 22 points - including three 3-point field goals - to lead the Blue Knights. Nicholas Mills scored 14 points and had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Jake Voelkner finished with eight points for St. Mary's; Brian Chegwidden scored six points; Luidgi Faubert had five; Matthew Muoio scored three points; Dillon Sinegra and Ryan Chegwidden each had two points; and Joseph LaRiccia scored a free throw to complete the scoring for St. Mary's.

Chapman leads St. Mary's to tournament win
DENVILLE - Michael Chapman scored 14 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the unbeaten St. Mary's boys varsity basketball team beat St. Lawrence (Chester), 59-45, in a first-round game of the St. Therese Christmas Tournament held in Succasunna on Wednesday, Dec. 29.
St. Mary's (6-0) held a 12-11 lead after one period and led 25-21 at the half before pulling away with an 18-9 third-quarter run - with Chapman scoring nine points - that gave the winners a 43-30 lead going into the final quarter of play.
Ryan Chegwidden and Jake Voelkner also scored in double figures as each finished with 10 points. Nicholas Mills added nine points; Brian Chegwidden scored seven points; Luidgi Faubert, Jack Pietrucha, Dillon Sinegra and Matthew Muoio each scored two points; and Joseph LaRiccia finished with a free throw to complete the scoring for St. Mary's.
St. Mary's faces the host St. Therese club in a 4 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011. The Denville team then returns to its Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League schedule on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, with a 2:30 p.m. game in Whippany against Our Lady of Mercy/Notre Dame.

St. Mary's stays unbeaten with strong second half
DENVILLE - The unbeaten St. Mary's varsity boys basketball team rallied in the third quarter to take the lead and then dominated in the fourth quarter to seal a 69-51 victory over St. Rose of Florham Park in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at St. Mary's on Sunday, Dec. 19.
St. Rose led 14-11 after one period and still had a two-point lead at 30-28 at the half before St. Mary's (5-0) defense kicked in. The Denville team had an 18-10 edge in the scoring in the third period before closing the game with a decisive 23-11 fourth-quarter outburst.
"We went into a full-court press that created turnovers that led to some easy baskets," said coach Mark Chegwidden after the game. "We also attacked their zone defense better with drives to the basket and a had a better interior passing game ... Michael Chapman did a nice job of handling the ball, penetrating and passing off for some easy baskets."
Ryan Chegwidden led a balanced St. Mary's offensive attack with 16 points. Jake Voelkner was second-high with 14 and Chapman and Brian Chegwidden also finished in double figures with Chapman scoring 11 points and Brian Cegwidden 10.
Nicholas Mills and Luidgi Faubert each had six points; Jack Pietrucha finished with four points; and Dillon Sinegra had two points to round out the St. Mary's scoring for the game.
St. Mary's is now off until Sunday, Jan. 2, when the team travels to Whippany to face Our Lady of Mercy/Notre Dame in a 2:30 p.m. game in the Our Lady gym.

St. Mary's unbeaten at 4-0 after win over Holy Family
DENVILLE - The undefeated St. Mary's boys varsity basketball team opened with a pressure man-to-man defense to defeat Holy Family of Florham Park, 47-20, for its fourth victory of the season in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at St. Mary's on Sunday, Dec. 12.
St. Mary's jumped out to a 21-7 lead after one quarter of play and took a commanding 37-13 lead into the halftime break before outscoring Holy Family, 10-7, in the second half.
Ryan Chegwidden and Jack Pietrucha shared scoring honors for St. Mary's as each scored 10 points. Brian Chegwidden scored six points; Michael Chapman added five points; Nicholas Mills, Jake Voelkner and Matthew Muoio each scored four points; and Luidgi Faubert and Dillon Sinegra each scored two points to round out the scoring for Denville.
St. Mary's will try to make it 5-0 on the season on Sunday, Dec. 19, when it faces St. Rose of East Hanover in a 2:30 p.m. game at St. Mary's.

St. Mary's early 18-2 run leads to a 48-22 win'
DENVILLE - Jake Voelkner scored eight of his 11 points in the first four minutes of the game as the St. Mary's boys varsity raced out to an 18-2 first-quarter lead en route to a 48-22 victory over Magnificat of Kinnelon in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at St. Mary's here on Sunday, Dec. 5.
St. Mary's (3-0) put up a strong defensive front throughout the game after holding Magnificat to two first-period points. Denville led 28-8 at the half and 37-16 after three quarters of play before closing out the game with an 11-6 fourth-quarter run.
Nicholas Mills led all Denville scorers with 12 points, most of them on breakaway layups. Michael Chapman added nine points; Jack Pietrucha had six; Brian Chegwidden finished with four points; and Joseph LaRiccia, Ryan Chegwidden and Matthew Muoio each scored two points to round out the scoring for St. Mary's.
Next for St. Mary's is a Sunday, Dec. 12, 1 p.m. home game against Holy Family of Florham Park.

St. Mary's 4th-period rally tops St. Catherine
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's boys varsity basketball team made it two in a row for the season as the 7th/8th grade team used a 19-8 fourth-quarter rally for a 51-43 victory over St. Catherine of Sienna in an Upper Morris Catholic CYO game played at Mountain Lakes on Sunday, Nov. 28.
Trailing 35-32 after three quarters of play, St. Mary's went into a full-court pressure defense that resulted in St. Catherine turnovers and St. Mary's points. At the same time, St. Mary's was able to break through St. Catherine's press for some breakaway points.
Michael Chapman, who scored at team-high 17 points for St. Mary's, led he fourth-period comeback with nine points on a combination of jump shots and drives to the basket.
Also for St. Mary's, Jake Voelkner finished with nine points; Luidgi Faubert had seven points; Brian Chegwidden and Nicholas Mills each scored six points; and Matt Muoio, Joseph LaRiccia and Dillon Sinegra each had two points to round out the scoring for St. Mary's.
St. Catherine led 14-9 after one quarter only to have St. Mary's go on a 16-9 second-quarter run to take a 25-23 lead at the halftime break. St. Catherine came back to outscore St. Mary's 12-7 in the third period to take it's three-point lead into the final period.
Chris Boyhan had a game-high 29 points for St. Catherine.
St. Mary's returns home for its next game, a 2:30 p.m. start on Sunday, Dec. 5, against Our Lady of Magnificat of Kinnelon.

St. Mary's opens CYO basketball season with a win
DENVILLE - The St. Mary's of Denville varsity boys basketball team opened its 2010-11 Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League season with a 50-28 victory over Assumption of Morristown in a game played at Assumption on Sunday, Nov. 21.
Brian Chegwidden scored 12 points and Jack Pietrucha added 10 to lead St. Mary's scoring as all seven St. Mary's players who suited up got into the scoring column.
Matt Muoio added nine points; Ryan Chegwidden scored six points; Jake Voelkner finished with five points; and Dillon Sinegra and Luidgi Faubert each added four points.
St. Mary's defensive pressure created some early turnovers that enabled the Denville team to break out to a 14-5 lead after one quarter. Assumption cut into the lead by two points to make it 22-15 at the half, but St. Mary's came back strong in the second half and outscored the home team 28-13 to put the game out of reach.
"We had good solid play from all seven players," said St. Mary's head coach Mark Chegwidden after the game. "Pietrucha got us off to a good start with six of his 10 points in the first quarter; Brain Chegwidden played a solid game on both ends of the floor; and Muoio gave us a nice offensive boost with his outside shooting."
St. Mary's next game is against St. Catherine of Mountain Lakes on Sunday, Nov. 28, at Mountain Lakes High School. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
