Game Day: The St. Clement girls junior varsity team is made up of fifth- and sixth-grade girls from St. Clement Church in Rockaway Township and Sacred Heart Church in Rockaway Borough. The team plays in the Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League and its home court is the Connery Hall gym at St. Clement.

Regular-season ends 6-4

after loss to St. Luke

      ROCKAWAY TWP. - The St. Clement girls junior varsity basketball team closed out its regular season in the Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League with a 29-8 loss to St. Luke in a game played at Connery Hall here on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011.
      The St. Clement Lady Knights finished their regular-season schedule with a 6-4 record and will find out their seed and schedule for the post-season playoffs that start this coming weekend.
       "The girls gave it a good effort and stayed with it ... they didn't quit," said St. Clement coach Dawn Morris after the game. "We had our shots - we took 30 - but the ball just didn't go into the net ... it was a tough loss in that respect.
       "The players rebounded well as a team as Monica Morris, Marisa McCaffrey, Rachel Weidanz, Megan Egan, Jess Spina and Danielle delaFuente combined for more than 25 for the game.
      "And the girls played good defense in spots ... Colleen Shaffer had a great game with two steals and two forced turnovers. We just couldn't capitalize on our chances."
       Spina finished with four points and Natalie Miller and delaFuente each had two.

       St. Clement drew the No. 4 seed in the six-team playoff field and will play No. 5 seed St. Therese-C on Saturday, Feb. 12, at St. Therese in Succasunna at 1:15 p.m.

St. Clement falls to St. Therese, 27-18

      ROCKAWAY TWP. - The St. Clement junior varsity girls travel basketball team started out strong, but St. Therese of Succasunna finished stronger to capture a 27-18 victory in an Upper Morris County Basketball League game played at Connery Hall here on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011.
      St. Clement (6-3) held an 8-3 lead after one quarter of play, but St. Therese outscored St. Clement 10-4 in the second quarter to take a 13-12 lead at the half. St. Therese then outscored St. Clement 14-6 in the second half to seal its victory.
     "This was a tough loss for us and I feel bad for the girls," said head coach Dawn Morris after the game. "We are a better team than we showed in the last three quarters ... hopefully, we'll see this team again in the playoffs."
      Megan Gaeb scored seven points to lead St. Clement. Megan Egan scored her first four points of the season; Marissa McCaffrey and Lexie Grubel each had three points; and Danielle delaFuente finished with one point to complete the scoring for St. Clement.
      Gaeb also had a team-high 10 rebounds; Monica Morris and delaFuente each had three; and Natalie Miller and Egan each had two. Morris and Colleen Shaffer had strong defensive outings as Morris forced six turnovers and Shaffer five.
      St. Clement concludes it regular-season schedule on Sunday, Feb. 6, with a 1 p.m. home game against St. Luke of Long Valley.

Gaeb scores final 4 point to defeat OLM, 22-21

     ROCKAWAY TWP. - Megan Gaeb's driving layup off a turnover with 38 seconds to play gave the St. Clement girls junior varsity basketball team a 22-21 victory over Our Lady of Mercy/Notre Dame in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at Our Lady of Mercy in Whippany on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011.
      A minute earlier, Gaeb had pulled St. Clement to within one point at 21-20 when she also scored on a layup following an Our Lady turnover.
      St. Clement (6-2) had entered the fourth period trailing 21-15 and, making good use of a full-court press, held Our Lady scoreless while scoring the seven points needed to win the game by a single point.
     "Monica Morris and Danielle delaFuente did a nice job up front on the press and Megan was able to score the last two baskets of the game after getting the ball on turnovers," said St. Clement head coach Dawn Morris after the game. "Marisa McCaffrey and Natlie Miller stayed back to protect the basket and we were able to keep them from scoring in the last quarter.
      "After Megan scored, they called a timeout and we told our girls to stay with the same defense but don't foul and, if we got the ball, to just relax and run out the clock.
      "They were able to get off a shot, but they didn't score and we were able to hold on for the win."
      Gaeb finished the game with a team-high 13 points for St. Clement. Jessica Spina added five points and Rachel Weidanz and McCaffrey each had two points.
      McCaffrey led the team in rebounds with a personal-high 10.
      St. Clement faces St. Therese (Succasunna) next on Sunday, Jan. 30, in a 2:15 p.m. game at St. Clement's Connery Hall.

St. Clement loses 'rematch' to Our Lady of the Lake

       ROCKAWAY TWP. - The rematch for which the girls on the St. Clement  junior varsity basketball had waited didn't turn out the way they had hoped it would.
      St. Clement lost a 27-11 decision to Our Lady of the Lake of Sparta in an Upper Morris County CYO League game played at Connery Hall on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, almost a month after losing a 17-11 decision to Our Lady in a game at Sparta, St. Clement's first loss of the season.
      St. Clement is now 5-2 in the CYO league with both losses coming to Our Lady.
      In the more recent game, the St. Clement JV girls couldn't sink anything in the first half and trailed by 8-0 after one quarter of play and 12-0 after two quarters.
     "We were getting our shots and taking them ... we finished with 40 shots," said St. Clement coach Dawn Morris after the game. "But they just wouldn't go in!
       "We finally scored a free throw in the third period and the outscored Our Lady 10-5 in the last quarter, but it just wasn't enough."
      Megan Gaeb finished with eight points and Jessica Spina had three to account for the St. Clement scoring for the day.
     St. Clement will have its chance to get back on the winning track on Sunday, Jan. 23, when it plays Our Lady of Mercy in Whippany in a 2:30 p.m. game.

Blue Knight JVs win on Grubel's shot in final 0:20

      ROCKAWAY TWP. - Lexie Gruble scored her only basket of the game with 20 seconds left to play when the St. Clement girls junior varsity basketball team beat St. Therese, 19-18, in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at Connery Hall here in the township on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2001.
      St. Clement (5-1) trailed 6-2 after one quarter; 8-7 at the half; and 14-11 after three quarters of play before outscoring St. Therese 8-4 in the final period to eke out its one-point victory.
      Megan Gaeb led all scorers with 11 points; Natailie Miller added four points; and Jessica Spina and Grubel each finished with two points to complete the scoring for St. Clement.
      St. Clement faces Our Lady of the Lake of Sparta - the only team to beat St. Clement this season - on Sunday, Jan. 16, in a 2:30 p.m. contest at Connery Hall.

Lady Blue Knights lose first game of season

     ROCKAWAY TWP. - The St. Clement junior varsity girls lost their first game of the season when they traveled to Sparta on Sunday, Dec.19, and fell to Our Lady of the Lake, 17-11, in an Upper Morris CYO Basketball League game.
     The win was the first of the season for Our Lady (1-3) while the loss saw St. Clement's record slip to 4-1.
      Our Lady held a 4-2 lead after one quarter and led 8-5 at the half. A 5-2 third-period gave Our Lady a 13-7 lead going into the final period where both teams scored four points, securing Our Lady's victory.
     Natalie Miller scored six points to lead the Lady Blue Knights. Rachel Weidanz and Monica Miller each added two points and Danielle delaFuente completed the St. Clement scoring totals with a free throw.
     St. Clement is idle through the Christmas break and has a bye on Sunday, Jan. 2. The Lady Blue Knights return to action on Sunday, Jan. 9, in a home game against St. Therese of Succasunna.

Lady Blue Knights (4-0) hold on for 19-10 victory

     ROCKAWAY TWP. - The unbeaten St. Clement girls junior varsity scored the last seven points of the game to turn back Corpus Christi of Chatham, 19-10, in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at Chatham on Sunday, Dec. 12.
     St. Clement (4-0) held Corpus Christi scoreless in the first half and took a 12-4 lead into the final period of play when the Chatham club scored six straight points to pull to within two points of the lead. St. Clement then sealed the victory by outscoring the home team 7-0 to close out the game.
    Natalie Olmedo, Marisa McCaffrey and Megan Gaeb shared scoring honors for St. Clement as each scored four points. Lexie Grubel, Monica Morris and Jessica Spina each finished with two points and Natialie Miller added a free throw to complete the scoring. 
     Spina finished with a game-high 12 rebounds while Megan Egan, Kiama Rodriguez and Danielle delaFuente each had two. Rachel Weidanz and Colleen Shaffer led a defense that forced 11 Corpus Christi turnovers.
     The Lady Blue Knights face Our Lady of the Lake in Sparta on Sunday, Dec. 19, with the game starting at 3:45 p.m.

Gaeb's 10 points, team 'D' lead to 20-16 victory

      ROCKAWAY TWP. - Megan Gaeb scored 10 points and the St. Clement girls junior varsity  basketball team played solid defense throughout the game in a 20-16 Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League victory over St. Catherine of Mountain Lakes at Connery Hall at St. Clement on Sunday, Dec. 5.
      Joining Gaeb in the scoring parade was Lexie Grubel with six points and Jessica Spina and Natalie Miller, each with two points. The team also showed solid ball control as St. Clement turned over the ball only four times during the game.
      Defense was the key as St. Clement (3-0)  finished the game with 17 steals. Kiana Rodriguez, Natali Olmedo and Marisa McCaffrey each had at least two takeaways.
      "Monica Morris had a terrific game on defense, working the full-court press," said coach Dawn Morris after the game. "And Rachel Weidanz and Danielle delaFuente each had strong games on both ends of the floor."
     St. Clement's next game is against Corpus Christi of Chatham in Chatham on Sunday, Dec. 12.

St. Clement rallies to beat St. Rose, 17-10
      ROCKAWAY TWP. -
The St. Clement Lady Blue Knight junior varsity team overcame a scoreless first period and rallied for a 17-10 victory over St. Rose of Florham Park in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at Connery Hall at St. Clement on Sunday, Nov. 18.
       St. Clement (2-0) trailed 4-0 after one period of play but shut down St. Rose in the second quarter while scoring six points to take a 6-4 lead at the halftimebreak. St. Clement outscored St. Rose 6-4 in the third quarter to take a 12-8 lead into the final period, where the Lady Blue Knights closed out the game with a 5-2 run.
       Rachel Weidanz and Megan Gaeb each had four points to lead the Blue Knights in scoring. Lexie Grubel added three points and Natalie Miller, Monica Morris and MarisaMcCaffrey each finished with two points.
      Megan Egan and Natalie Olmedo helped the Lady Knights control the boards and College Shaffer sparked a solid defensive effort by the team with four steals.

Lady Blue Knights open season with 22-10 win
      ROCKAWAY TWP. -
The St. Clement Lady Blue Knight junior varsity basketball team opened its 2010-11 season in the Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League with a 22-10 victory over Our Lady Magnificat in a game played at Kinnelon on Sunday, Nov. 21.
      St. Clement took a 12-10 lead into the final period where the Lady Blue Knights' solid defense shut down the home team as St. Clement close out the game with a 10-0 run.
      Megan Gaeb led the Lady Blue Knights in scoring with 10 points while Marisa McCaffrey added eight  and Lexie Grubal finished with four.
