Oppermann TD beats

Par Hills in final 0:25

-

DENVILLE - Mike Chegwidden, who keeps the scorebook and takes care of the stats for the Denville Blue Angels junior varsity football team, called it "... one of the craziest plays I've ever seen on a football field!"
The "play" gave Denville a 12-6 victory over Parsippany Hills in a Morris County Youth Football League game played at Jannarone Field in Parsippany on Sunday, Nov. 14, and it came with 25 seconds left in the game.
It all started with the scored tied at 6-6 and Par Hills with the ball after Denville ran failed to convert a fourth-and-short on its own 40-yard line with about 40 seconds  left in the game.
On first down, the Parsippany Hills quarterback dropped back to pass and Denville's Max Oppermann closed in on him and took the ball right out of his hand as he started to throw the ball and ran 52 yards untouched into the Par Hills endzone for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown, stopping the game clock with 25 seconds left to play.
"Max was rushing from the quarterback's blind side and the kid never saw him coming," Chegwidden explained. "The QB cocked his arm to throw and Max just grabbed the ball right out of his throwing hand and he was off to the races.
"It reminded me of the old Statue of Liberty play where a QB would hold the ball up as if to pass and one of his teammates would come behind him and take it from him like a handoff. Only this wasn't a handoff and Max wasn't one of his teammates."
Any thoughts of a Parsippany Hills' comeback went out the window when Par Hills fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Denville recovered.
The victory gave Denville a final MCYFL record of 7-3 and enabled the Blue Angels to clinch sole possession of second place in the Morris Division of the American Conference behind division champ Boonton-Mtn. Lakes, which lost but one game. Parsippany Hills (5-4) finished in a third-place tie with Hackettstown.
Denville's Alex Boroweic accounted for the only points of the first half when he scored on a 3-yard run and Par Hills' Joey Lawrence scored on a 10-yard run in the third period to tie the score at 6-6.
The defenses took over again and the game remained tied until Oppermann did his thing and stole the game for Denville.

Boroweic 14-point day edges Jr. Knights, 14-12

DENVILLE - A 14-point performance by Alex Boroweic and a defensive stand late in the game sent the Denville Blue Angels junior varsity to a 14-12 victory over the Jr. Knights in a Morris County Youth Football League game played at Donatoni Park on Saturday, Nov. 6.
The Jr. Knights scored first, marching downfield on its opening drive to score on a 15-yard run to take a 6-0 lead.
The Blue Angels wasted no time in scoring as they took the ensuing kickoff and, on their first offensive play, Boroweic broke free for a 60-yard touchdown run. Boroweic also added the PAT on a run to give Denville a 7-6 lead.
Boroweic scored his second TD and second PAT of the game in the second quarter to give the Blue Angels a 14-6 lead.
A Denville defensive stand led by Max Oppermann and Ryan Chegwidden kept the Knights out of the endzone as time ran out in the first half.
The Knights pulled to within two points on a 45-yard touchdown run in the third period but the try for the two-point conversion kick was blocked by Boroweic to keep the score at 14-12 in favor of Denville.
The Jr. Knights threatened again late in the game, reaching the Blue Angels' 30-yard line before fumbling the ball away on a fourth-and-1 play. Denville took over and ran out what was left on the game clock to end the game.
The Blue Angels are now 6-3 and in second place behind Morris Division champ Boonton-Mountain Lakes.
The Denville jayvees finish in sole possession of second place in the division if they beat third-place Parsippany Hills (5-3) on Sunday, Nov. 14, in a 1:30 p.m. game at Jannarone Park in Parsippany.

Denville tied the score in the second quarter when Boroweic scored his TD and Andrew Yenesel ran in the PAT. A key play in the Denville scoring drive was Boroweic's 20-yard run on a fourth-and-10 that brought the ball down to the Dover 10-yard line. Boroweic scored two plays later.
The rest of the scoring came from the quick feet of Dwayne Brown, who scored on a run of 65 yards to give the visiting Tigers a 13-7 halftime lead and then added two 35-yard scoring runs in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring for the game.
Denville had a good scoring opportunity when Boroweic returned the second-half kickoff to the Dover 20-yard line, but Dover's defense stiffened and took over the ball on downs on four plays.
Defensive highlights for the Blue Angels included Max Oppermann's fumble recovery in the second quarter and Camilo Ramirez' fumble recovery in the third quarter.

Hackettstown scored two quick fourth-period touchdowns - the second with about four minutes to play - and added 2-point conversion kicks after each one to pull to within four points at 20-16.
The Hackettstown defense held Denville to a three-and-out after the second TD, giving the Little Tigers the ball on the Denville 40-yard line with two minutes left to play in the game.
