Cardinals capture Series title to finish season at 18-0 -
ROCKAWAY TWP. - Matthew Clementoni and Kevin Nienhouse combined for five RBIs and Clementoni pitched a complete game when the unbeaten Cardinals held off the Red Sox, 7-5, to win the Rockaway Township Little League World Series, two games to none, in a game played at Peterson Field-1 on Saturday, June 18, 2011. The win was the 18th of the season for the Cardinals, who won the National League regular-season title with a 13-0 record before winning all five post-season games. The Red Sox (10-8) finished the regular season tied for fourth in the American League with a 7-6 record but won their first three post-season playoff games before losing two straight to the Cardinals. All five Red Sox runs were driven in by Travis Ardin, who hit a two-run home run in the first inning and added a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth when the Red Sox closed a five-run deficit to two before winning pitcher Clementoni got the next two batters to end the game. The Cards took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Christian Bornemann led off the game with a single and scored on Clementoni's one-out homer to left field. The Red Sox answered with two runs of their own in their half of the first when Zack Kovach singled and Ardin followed with a two-run homer over the fence in right-center. In the top of the second, the Cards took a 5-2 lead when Zach Trautz walked, Bornemann drove him in with a double and, after Jace Campbell and Clementoni walked to load the bases, Kevin Nienhouse brought in two runs with a two-out double. Neither team scored until the top of the fifth when Trautz hit a one-out single, Campbell drew a two-out walk, and Clementoni drove in what proved to be the winning run with a double off the fence in left-center. The Cards scored their final run of the game in the top of the sixth when Greg Jones drew a one-out walk, stole second, moved to third when Bryan Green grounded out, and scored on a single by Joey Marcano. Trailing 7-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, the Red Sox started their last-ditch rally when Zach Knightes singled, Kovach doubled and Ardin followed with a one-out homer - his second of the day - to cut the Cardinals' lead to 7-5. But Clementoni retired the next two batters - the last on a comebacker - to get out of the inning and end the game with no further damage. Clementoni, who also beat the Red sox in relief in the first Series game, scattered nine hits in picking up the victory. He struck out eight and didn't walk a man and all five runs off him were earned. Clementoni was the big RBI man with three, going 2-for-3 with a homer, double, walk and a run scored. Nienhouse, who finished 1-for-3 with a walk, drove in two runs with his second-inning double. Bornemann was 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored; Trautz finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored; Campbell was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored; Brandon Hurt was 1-for-4 with a double; Jones was 1-for-1 with three walks and a run scored; Marcano finished 1-for-3 with an RBI to round out the Cardinals 12-hit attack. Frommelt started for the Red Sox and pitched two-plus innings before Joey Gonzalez came in and pitched the final four innings of the game. Three outstanding defensive plays by the Red Sox kept the Cards from scoring even more runs in the finale. Frommelt got out of the first inning with a double play when he snagged a line drive back through the middle and alertly threw to Ardin at third base to double-up a Cardinal runner; center fielder Joey Berkowitz saved at least one run with a fine running catch of a ball hit to deep center; and shortstop Andrew Trujillo went deep into the hole for a grounder hit between short and third to throw out the batter. In the end, though, it was the Cardinals who celebrated their World Series championship - first with a quick trip to Dover Dairy for ice cream and then later with pizza at manager Ed Bornemann's home. --- Walk-off single by Marcano gives Cards 1-0 Series lead ROCKAWAY TWP. - Joey Marcano's bases-loaded walk-off single in the sixth inning gave the unbeaten Cardinals a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox in the first game of Rockaway Township Little League's best-of-three World Series at Peterson Field-1 on Thursday, June 16, 2011.
