ROCKAWAY TWP. - The Rockaway Township American All-Star entry in the first Rockaway Rumble 10s Baseball Tournament kept it close for two innings before Denville pulled away for an 18-10 victory on the first day of the tournament at Peterson Field here on Tuesday, June 29.
Denville, which finished with 13 hits and scored in every inning except one in the six-inning contest, scored three runs in each the the two first innings, but Rockaway Township came back each time and trailed by one at 6-5 going into the third inning.
Denville the put together a pair of five-running innings to put the game out of reach, although Rockaway Township did come back with two runs in the fourth and three more in the third to close the gap.
"They were the better team this day ... they hit the ball well," said assistant manager Rick Lago after the game. "Our kids kept coming back, though; they tried their best."
Leadoff hitter Jason Pontelonia was 1-for-3 with an RBI single and scored all three times he reached base. Patrick Gallagher was 1-for-2 with an RBI single; Matt Callazos was 1-for-2 with an RBI single and scored two runs; and Wil Guida walked twice, had an RBI, reached base twice on errors and scored three times while going 0-for-2.
Jaden Lago, Justin Parisi, Zach Trautz, Gallagher, Guida and Pontelonia shared the pitching duties for the Rockaway Township team.
Shortstop Callazos' unassisted double play in the third inning was the defensive play of the game for Rockaway Township. With runners on first and second, Callazos caught a line drive and then beat the runner back to second base to double him up.
