CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS - 2011 Rockaway wins first title in 27 years in the league -
ROCKAWAY - Twenty-seven years later, they are the champions. The “they” here is the Rockaway Borough Rams Junior Track & Field Team and the championship it won was the Lakeland Junior Track & Field Conference’s Division 2 title at post-season league Meet of Champions held at Morris Knolls High School on Sunday, June 12, 2011. Rockaway has been in the league for 27 years and this is the borough's first conference championship in track and field. The Rams, after winning seven of eight dual meets this past spring, scored 275 points in the meet to finish ahead of Mountain Lakes (230) and Madison (220.5) in the final point standings. Chester (136 points), Hopatcong (94), Long Valley (76.5), Jefferson (68) and Dover (46) completed the eight-team Division 2 field. In the Division One competition, Mendham scored 354 points to win its fourth straight title. Randolph (271 points), Parsippany (144), Denville (113), Rockaway Township (103), Roxbury (94), Mount Olive (59) and Montville (14) rounded out the eight-team field. "It's an absolutely fantastic feeling of accomplishment," said Rockaway Boro head coach Chris Dennehy, who inherited 18 kids when he took over the program in 2008. "We have been nobodys in this league for so long that I still can't wrap my brain around our winning. "It's Just a tremendous feat for a very small town ... I'm so proud of our kids." Outstanding performances by boys and girls in the field events provided Rockaway's winning margin. In the boys 9-10 long jump, Angelo Macera's leap of 13-feet,10-inches broke the previous Meet of Champions mark of 13-6 set by Rocky Clark of Madison in 1985. Rockaway's Matt Morena cleared 11-1 to finish fourth in the boys 9-10 long jump. In the boys 11-12 long jump, Rockaway's Mario Ciccotti cleared 13-0 to finish second. The Borough girls also scored points in the long jump. Casey Lyness cleared 15-0 in the 13-15 age group to take first in Division 2 and second overall. Anjali Pai cleared 13-0 to place third in the 11-12 group and Kelly Walls was third in the 9-10 age group with a 9-5 effort. "I have to give all the credit to my assistants Glenn Hopler and Ramon Chappell for our success in the field events," Dennehy said. "They know their stuff and most importantly know how to explain the techniques in simple terms our kids can understand. It shows in the results." Rockaway also scored well in the shot put, finishing 1-2 in the boys 13-15 when Mark Gaeta threw 33-8 to win the event and teammate Shaun Montalto-Rook was second at 32-11. Rockaway Boro also won the boys 9-10 shot put behind Robert Chappell's throw of 19-2. In the girls shot, Maddison Perna took first overall with a throw of 19-6. Rockaway also got a pair of second-place finishes when Jenna Catalano threw 24-0 in the 9-11 age group and Kayla Fleming cleared 29-8 in the 13-15 age group. On the running side of the ledger for the girls, eighth-grader Casey Lyness' last meet for Rockaway was a winning one. Lyness took first overall in the 100 meters with a time of 13.28, won the 200 in 27.72, and anchored Rockaway's winning 4x100 squad of Annamarie Ciallella, Annie Slusser and Kayla Fleming, which won the race in 55.14. Ciallella finished second in Division 2 behind Lyness in the 100 (14.40) and the 200 (31.08). In the girl's 13-15, Fleming took second overall in the 400 (1:04.64) and third in Division 2 in the 800 (2:42.04). Anjali Pai led Rockaway's 11-12 girls, winning overall in the 400 (1:06.53) and first in Division 2 in the 800 (2:46.24). Kelly Walls finished third in the girls 9-10 100 (16.40) and took second in the 200 (35.47). Walls also teamed with Maggie Lenahan, Ariana Manlangit, and Maddison Perna to lead Rockaway's victorious 4x100 relay squad. Alex Pai and Michael Morena performances in the boys 11-12 mile were among the Rockaway boys running highlights. Pai took third in Division 2 in 5:59.19 and Morena took fourth in 5:59.57, as both runners broke the six-minute mark for the first time. Pai also ran second in the 800 meters in 2:42.60. In the boys 9-10 mile, Matt Morena ran to a third-place finish in 6:15. In addition to his long jump record, Angelo Macera won the boys 9-10 100 (15.10) and took second in the 200 (32.66). In the boys 13-15 400 meters, Mark Gaeta ran second (1:04.60). In the boys 13-15 800 meters, John Dennehy took second (2:22.89) and Michael Pais ran fifth (2:25.23). In the mile, Pais ran second (5:35.16) and Dennehy took third (5:38.20). Rockaway's reward for winning the Division 2 championship is promotion to the Division 1 for the 2012 season, where the Rams will compete with the county's track & field heavyweights. "We'll worry about that next season," Dennehy said. "For now, we're very much going to enjoy the moment."

2011 SEASON Rams post 'personal bests' at Lakeland's Open Meet
-
ROCKAWAY - The Lakeland Junior Track & Field Conference held its "Open Meet" at Morris Hills High School on Sunday, June 5, 2011, and, although neither team scores nor individual finishes recorded, the goal of providing a post-season experience for those young athletes who did not qualify for next weekend's league championship meet was successfully attained. Athletes from Rockaway Township, Randolph, Denville, Madison and Parsippany joined the Rockaway Borough team in the competition. "There are a lot of athletes and a lot of events," said Rockaway Borough coach Chris Dennehy. "At times, the meet resembles an assembly line of track & field, with heats going off in rapid succession. "Coaches record their athletes respective times and marks and hand out ribbons ... we make special note of those who have set their own personal bests at the meet." There were several highlights for the Rockaway Borough Rams in the "personal best" department. In the boys 13-15 age group, James Daley ran a season-best 1:06.75 in the 400 meters; Robert Lenahan set a personal record of 31.17 in the 200 meters; and Ryan DiGioia (15.08) and Dillan Connington (16.17) ran personal bests the 100-meter sprint. In the boys 11-12, John Schaefer ran a season best 3:37 in the 800 and Nick Pearce's 19.14 in the 100 also was a season best. Ariana Lopez' time of 17.93 in the 100 meters was a season best in the girls 11-12. In the girls 9-10, Kyara Segura (35.56) and Erika Scholtz (38.71) set personal bests in the 200 meters and Anna Pratt cleared 9-8 for a personal best in the long jump. The Rockaway Borough track & field team will compete in the Lakeland Junior Track & Field Championships on Saturday, June 11, at Morris Knolls High School. The meet starts at 8 a.m.

2011 SEASON Borough defeats Township in 1st 'Battle of Rockaways' -
ROCKAWAY - Chris Dennehy described Sunday, May 29, 2011, as "... a great day for track and field" ... and not just because his Rockaway Borough team defeated Rockaway Township, 274-134, in a Lakeland Junior Track & Field dual meet at Morris Hills High School, either. The meet marked the first time the two neighboring towns had faced each other in league competition and the "Battle of the Rockaways" drew an enthusiastic crowd of fans, friends and relatives to watch the more than 200 athletes compete. Rockaway Mayor Russ Greuter and Tom Mulligan and Melissa Burnside from the town council were on hand to participate in the meet's opening ceremonies; Morris Hills boys track coach Sean Robinson and girls track coach Nastaran Whitson were on hand to see some of their future athletes compete; and Rockaway distance runner Makenzie Schaefer, 13, gave a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner to highlight the festive day. "We scrimmaged each other last year and both towns' coaches and athletes had a good time," Dennehy had said before the meet. "We were eager to tap into the good vibes that came out of that scrimmage so we decided to schedule an official meet for this season." The "we" here includes Dennehy and Rockaway Township head coach Rick Evans, who was "on board with everything right from the start," according to Dennehy. "Coach Evans and I are on the same page on this - it's all about the kids," Dennehy said. "The kids know each other from living so close and playing against each other in other sports. "Today's meet seemed to bring out the best in the kids - both in terms of performance and sportsmanship. There were a lot of smiles ... it was a very festive afternoon." While both teams are long-standing members of the Lakeland Conference, the teams had never met before because Rockaway Township was in the bigger Division 1 part of the league and Rockaway Borough was in the smaller Division 2 portion. In recent years, however, the Rockaway Borough program has enjoyed a surge in popularity and has more than tripled in size and it just made a lot of sense to get the two teams together for an official meet. Both programs wind up their seasons over the next two weekends - they will compete in the conference's Open Championship Meet on Sunday, June 5, at Morris Hills and in the Meet of Champions on Saturday, June 11, at Randolph High School. Rockaway swept the board in the 4x100-meter relay races to spark the victory and keep the Rams unbeaten in dual meets at 8-0 for the season. Marcus Plaza, Matt Morena, Robert Chappell and Angelo Macera won the boys 9-10 relay in 1:05.05 and Sonia Casiano, Erika Scholtz, Kellyh Walls and Alysha Whittle won the girls 9-10 race in 1:08.62. LAKELAND JUNIOR 2011 RELAYS 11-12 girls sprint medley victory highlight of 'best-ever' meet -
ROCKAWAY - Calling it "... the best ever showing" by his team, Rockaway Borough coach Chris Dennehy was all smiles after the Lakeland Junior Track & Field Conference Relay Championships that were held at Hopatcong High School on Friday, May 27, 2011. The meet involved all of the league's 16 teams and both Division 1 (bigger) and Division 2 (smaller) programs competed against each other although there were no team scores kept. Three relay events - the 4x100, sprint medley and distance medley - were held for all age groups while the 11-12 and 13-15 age groups also competed in the shot put relay with two throwers on each team. "The highlight for us was the first-place overall finish of our girls 11-12 sprint medley team consisting of Sam Sexton, Aidan Pinto, Gianna Gillespie and Anjali Pai," Dennehy said after the meet. "Pai's kick in the final 200 yards of her 400 leg rocketed her and her teammates from last place to first place to nip Randolph in the stretch in 2:13.9. "That first-place overall finish represented the first time Rockaway had ever won a race outright at this meet ... we usually fare well against other Division II programs and often punch above our weight against the Division I big boys, but we had never before had an overall first-place finish in this meet." The girls finished with six top-six finishes in the 11-event meet while the boys, led by the third-place finish of Shaun Montalto-Rook and Mark Gaeta in the shot put, finished in the top six in eight of their 11 events. The Lady Rams had two fourth-place finishes - the 9-10 4x100 team of Kelly Walls, Maggie Lenahan, Ariana Manlangit and Alysha Whittle finished fourth in 1:06.6 and the same foursome placed fourth in the sprint medley with a time of 2:30.0. The girls 13-15 sprint medley team of Anna Marie Ciallella, Elizabeth Ertle, Regina Lyons and Kayla Fleming finished sixth with a time of 2:07.6 and the shot put team of Fleming and Ertle also finished sixth with a combined throw of 44-feet, 1.5-inches with Fleming's 28-6.25 the best throw of the girls side of the meet. The boys also did well in the shot with Montalto-Rook throwing a 33.10.5 and Gaeta a 29-8.5 to finish with a combined 63-2 for their third-place finish. The boys had two fourth-place finishes as the 9-10 sprint medley team of Angelo Macera, Robert Chappell, Marcus Plaza and Matt Morena finished fourth in 2:28.2 and the 13-15 distance medley team of Michael Pais, Arthur Pacheco, James Daley and John Dennehy finished in 9:34.6 for their fourth-place finish. The 11-12 shot put team of Alex Pai and Colin Martin threw a combined 48-7.5 to finish fifth and the 13-15 4x100 meter team also finished fifth when Michael Gosden, Pacheco, Dennehy and Gaeta ran a 53.4. Rockaway and Denville
battle to a 204-204 tie
-
ROCKAWAY - Chris Dennehy called it "... an absolute barn-burner of a meet" -- and he wasn't talking about the 90-degree heat on the Morris Knolls High School track this past Sunday, May 2. Dennehy was describing the Lakeland Junior Track & Field Conference meet between his Rockaway Borough team and Denville that had just ended in a 204-204 tie, the final result not made official until an hour after the meet ended as officials and coaches from both teams went over and over the results. It was the first time in three meets this spring that Dennehy's Rockaway team had not won, but the Rockaway head coach was looking at more than just records and victories when talking about this meet. The tie was also marked the first time in 20 years that Denville did not win the meet between the two neighboring towns. "Denville has always had an excellent program ... they came in second in the conference meet the last two seasons," Dennehy explained. "Our program almost disbanded three years ago when we were down to 18 kids ... we now have 90 and the feeling here is we can compete with any team in the league. "This is an outstanding accomplishment for our team," Dennehy added. "We're thrilled to have gone toe-to-toe with a team of Denville's calibre. "It was a great meet against great competition and, after watching the kids from both teams compete, the tie is the fairest thing that could have happened out there ... it would have been a shame to have either team lose such a hotly-contested contest." Leading the way for Rockaway was Ben Tuhy, who competed in the 13-15 boys division. Tuhy finished first and set personal record in the 100-meter dash (13.13), 400 (1:03.40) and long jump (16-feet, 0-inches). He also anchored Rockaway's winning 4x100 relay, running with Mark Gaeta, Chris Williams and Michael Pais. Rockaway also received key performances from the Perna sisters, Frankie and Maddison. Frankie, competing in the 11-12 age group, won the 800 in 2:54.10 and he mile in 6:38.57. Maddison won the 800 in 3:11.57, the 400 in 1:28.33, the shot put with a throw of 16-0, and anchored the winning 4x100 team with Kelly Walls, Alysha Whittle and Gianna Gillespie in the 9-10 age group. In the boys 9-10 mile, Rockaway's Patrick Delle and Ryan Munoz finished 1-2. Delle's winning time was 6:55.21 and Munoz turned in a 7:16.15 clocking in his first attempt at the mile run. Kevin McNally and Dylan McBride also took their first crack at the mile and McNally finished in 8:05.45 and McBride was times in 8:56.65. Munoz also won the shot put with a throw of 19-10. Casey Lyness was a four-event winner as she won the 100 in 13.58, took the 200 in 29.27, and cleared 12-3 to win the long jump. She also anchored the winning 4x100 team when Maria Zapata, Nicole Segura, Zoe Casiano and Lyness turned in a time of 58.65.
