Costanzo's 3 goals spark 'man-down' Renegades, 5-4    ROCKAWAY TWP. -
RockDen Renegade coach James Costanzo knew he'd be in for a rough evening when only 10 players on his eighth-grade boys lacrosse team said they would be able to play against Branchburg in a hastily-arranged makeup game.
But when nine players showed up and Costanzo realized the team would be playing a man down the entire game, he admitted later he had thoughts of trying to get the game postponed.
"It would have been one of the biggest mistakes of my life," Costanzo said after the game, a game in which his son James scored three goals with the third the deciding goal in a 5-4 victory over Branchburg at Branchburg on Friday, May 27, 2011.
"I knew going down there with 10 players would be a tremendous challenge ... but playing short-handed was almost unthinkable."
The Branchburg coach was given the option of also playing with nine men but, according to Costanzo, he chose not to do so. In fact, Branchburg used the extra man to double-team the Renegade player with the ball when he saw that RockDen was competitive even thought it was playing a man down.
"Our kids played a tremendous game," Costanzo said. "Every kid just about played every position there was as we tried to get our players some rest by moving them around ... when our midfielders ran out of gas, we had defenders and attack take over.

"Our kids played their hearts out on what turned out to be a hot, muggy evening."
The younger Costanzo scored the game-winner with four minutes to play. With the scored tied at 4-4, he won a faceoff, drew the double-team and headed upfield. He was slowed by a check that dislodged his elbow pad and, when the defense relaxed as he was adjusting it, he dodged the two players and moved in for an unassisted goal.
RockDen entered the fourth period trailing, 4-3, when Costanzo won another faceoff and, after trading passes with Matt Mitgaronto, scored the tying goal.
Costanzo scored the first goal of the game with an assist from Tucker Simmons; Thomas Pappas scored unassisted for RockDen's second goal of the game; and Tyler Simmons scored with an assist from his brother Tucker - his second of the game - for the third goal.
Cullen Stone was in goal the entire game for the Renegades and finished with six saves.
"This group we had tonight was unselfish, played smart and played as a team," Costanzo the coach said. "They not only came together on short notice on a holiday weekend, but they made their coaches, parents and program extremely proud of them.
"And now they have a great story to tell - they beat Branchburg with only nine players!"
