Madden goal in final 38 seconds
gives RockDen 9-9 tie vs. Wayne
-
ROCKAWAY TWP. -- Taylor Madden's second goal of the game - with 38 seconds left to play in the game - enabled the RockDen Lady Renegades 7th/8th Gold to complete a rally that resulted in a 9-9 standoff against Wayne in a youth lacrosse game played at the Pocono Road Fields on Monday, June 7.
Trailing 9-7 with less than two minutes to play, Lexi Finn scooped up a ball at midfield and pushed hard upfield to break away for a goal that closed the RockDen gap to a goal at 9-8.
With less than a minute left on the clock, Brooke Fuertges won a draw and got the ball to Madden who was able to get off a low shot that skipped past the Wayne keeper with just 38 seconds showing on the game clock, a goal that pulled the Lady Renegades into their tie in their 2010 season finale.
"We were missing a few key players and scorers and I told the girls we had to play hard and leave it all out on the field," said head coach Anthony Finn after the game. "They did just that and ended the season on a high note with their tie against a very good Wayne program."
Wayne held a 6-4 halftime lead and scored two of the first three goals of the second half to take an 8-5 advantage over the Lady Renegades.
Goals by Samantha Stainziale and Sabrina Venturini brought the Lady Renegades to within a goal at 8-7 before Wayne struck again with five minutes to play to put RockDen back down by two goals.
But Finn and Madden did their things and the Lady Renegades walked off with a well-earned tie.
Gena Blewett, Carly Ellis, Blair Ahrendt and Fuertges also scored single goals for RockDen, which hit the post on three shots on goal in the first half.
Serena Lakhiani finished the game with two assists and Melanie Dasilva, Michaela Clark, Finn and Blewett each added one.
Stanziale was in goal the first half and made seven saves while Jamie Barrett had the keeper duties in the second half and stopped five shots on goal.
"The girls stepped up the defense in the second half," Finn said. "Caroline Dunn, Danielle Miller, Dasilva, Stanziale, Finn and Ellis held Wayne to only three goals and were in there fighting for every groundball as well."
