D&M Auto Body coach pleased with 2011 season
-
ROCKAWAY - Brian Pelkey watched his D&M Auto Body team in the Rockaway Borough Little League Minors Division grow and improve during the season to the point he figured his club was "... one of the two best in the league." Which is one reason he was a little disappointed D&M was eliminated in the semifinal round of the Northern Morris Interleague post-season playoffs, a loss that gave D&M a final 2011 season record of 8-4-2. Disappointed with the loss but definitely NOT disappointed with the season. "We came a very long way this year," Pelkey said. "Early on, we had problems getting in practice time because of the weather like everybody else and weren't where we thought we should be when the season started. "But the kids improved as the year went along ... and that was good to see." Five players handled the pitching duties for the season - Eric Varellie, Devin Musser, John Rice, Anthony Catalano and Ian Pelkey. Varellie had the best control of the group, walking less than one batter for each inning pitched - an outstanding statistic for pitchers of this age. Pelkey was the leading hitter, finishing with a .688 batting average. Varellie batted .581, John Rice hit .536 and Angelo Macera and Musser each finished at .500. Brian Reynoso batted .364, Chris Sarmiento hit .300 and Miles Weathersby and Antholny Catalano each hit .250. Chris Smith and Jerry McCarthy each had four hits for the season and Marcus Plaza finished with two hits. Pelkey led the team in RBIs with 20 followed by Varellie (16), Rice (15) and Musser (13). Pelkey also had a team-high runs scored with 19 followed by Varellie and Macera, each with 14. "Everybody on the roster got at least two hits ... which is rare for a minor division team," Pelkey said. "And everybody scored at least four runs and everybody drove in at least two runs." Pelkey was also proud of his team's defense - especially the play of Varellie at shortstop, Rice at first base, Smith at catcher, and Catalano at third base. "We moved kids around to give them all a chance to play a position they wanted to try," Pelkey said. "Every single kid got to play in the infield at one time or another and every kid who wanted to catch got a chance there, too. "Bottom line, the kids had a lot of fun, we saw a lot of improvement, and we won some games. It was a great season." --- D&M loses to R&M in playoff semifinals, 9-5 ROCKAWAY - The goal all along was to make the championship game - but the Rockaway Little League D&M Auto Body team fell one game short of its goal with a 9-5 loss to R&M Painting of Morris Plains in a Northern Morris Interleague playoff semifinal game played at Jim Fear Field in Morris Plains on Wednesday, June 8, 2011. D&M (8-4-2) opened the game with a four-run outburst in its first at-bat and added a run in the top of the third for a 5-1 lead only to see R&M score four runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to win the game and move onto the championship contest. Devin Musser walked to open the game and was driven in with the first run when Angelo Macera followed with a triple. Eric Varellie hit a triple of his own to drive in Macera and then scored when John Rice hit a two-run homer to give D&M a 4-0 lead. R&M got one of the runs back in its half of the inning, but D&M regained its four-run lead with a single run in the top of the third when Macera hit a two-out single, went to third on a double by Varellie, and scored on a single by Ian Pelkey. R&M tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth on a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double and a sacrifice fly and won the game in the fifth on a pair of two-run doubles. Macera, Varellie and Pelkey each had two hits for D&M, Macera going 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored; Varellie finishing 2-for-3 with a triple, double, RBI and run scored; and Pelkey going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Rice was 1-for-1 with his two-run homer and a walk and Brian Reynoso was 1-for-2 to account for D&M's eight hits. Rice, Pelkey and Musser did the pitching for D&M. Rice struck out the side twice in his time on the mound, including the third inning when he faced but three batters. D&M (8-3-2) will face R&M Painting in a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday, June 8, in Morris Plains in one of the league's semifinal games. Angelo Macerea was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored; Ian Pelkey was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored; and John Rice finished 2-for-2 with a triple, double, a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. D&M set the tone for the game in the bottom of the first inning with a four-run rally that was touched off by four consecutive extra-base hits - Macera got it started with a one-out triple and then Varellie, Pelkey and Rice followed with back-to-back-to-back doubles. After Rice stole third, Reynoso grounded out to bring in Rice with the final run of the inning. Another four-run flurry in the second inning was highlighted by Musser's RBI single, Valellie's two-run double and an RBI groundout by Pelkey. Musser took care of D&M's third straight four-run inning with one swipe of his bat as he followed walks to Catalano, McCarthy and Plaza with an inside-the-park home run with Musser sliding around the catcher's tag on a close play at the plate. In the fourth, Peleky singled, Rice tripled and Reynoso followed with an RBI single to complete the scoring for the game. --- D&M 7-3-2 for regular season, draws No. 4 playoff seed ROCKAWAY - D&M Auto Body will take a 7-3-2 record and the No. 4 seed into the Northern Morris Interleague Minor Division post-season playoffs after losing its regular-season finale to R&M Painting of Morris Plains, 10-5, in a game played at Jim Fear Field in Morris Plains on Tuesday, May 31, 2011. R&M took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth when it scored five times on two singles, four walks and an error. Pelkey's double and Rice's RBI single put D&M to within a run of R&M at 6-4, but the home team added four insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on seven walks and only one hit R&M would have scored more but a Plaza-to-Sarmiento-to-Rice (7-5-2) relay on R&M's only hit of the inning caught an R&M runner at the plate and Rice got the third out when he threw a strike to Sarmiento at third base to cut down a would-be base-stealer. D&M outhit R&M, 7-5, with Rice finishing 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and McCarthy going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
