ROCKAWAY - The Rockaway Rampage 10U travel team - sparked by the four-RBI performance of Madison Perna - battled back from a 5-0 deficit only to have the Sparta Diamonds push across the winning run in the bottom of the sixth and final inning for a 6-5 victory in the Gold Division championship game at the Michelle Fund Softball Tournament in Montville on Sunday, April 1, 2011.
Earlier in the day, the Rampage beat Suffrin Styx, 2-1, in the semifinal round after edging the top-seeded Mount Olive Marauders, 5-4, in the first elimination game.
The Rampage entered Sunday's play as the No. 8 seeded team in the eight-team division after going 2-1 in the seeding-round games on Saturday.
In the championship game, Sparta took a 5-0 lead after three innings before the Rampage started their comeback.
The Rampage cut the lead to 5-2 in the fourth when Victoria Aspiazu and Carli VanRiper opened the inning with singles and, after each moved up a base on Jamie Ingling's groundout, Perna followed with a single to drive in both runners.
In the fifth, Emma Snead got a three-run rally started with a one-out triple and scored on Aspiazu's sacrifice fly to center. VanRiper and Ingling followed with two-out singles and Perna followed with a triple to center to bring in both runners and tie the score at 5-5.
After neither side scored in its next at-bat, Sparta's first batter in the bottom of the sixth walked and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A hit batter put runners on first and second and both runners moved up on a wild pitch.
A one-out bouncer to VanRiper at third turned into the second out of the inning when VanRiper fired to Aspiazu at the plate for a fielder's choice. But the next batter lined a two-out single to left-center to give Sparta a walk-off victory and the tournament championship.
"This was our first full tournament of the season and all the coaches were proud of the way the girls played," said Rampage head coach Derek Lee after the game. "The team has come a long way despite not getting in a lot of practices because of the weather and wet fields."
Perna was the leading batter in the title game, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBIs.
In the semifinal victory over the Suffrin Styx, the Rampage took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Snead walked, took second on a single by Aspiazu and, after both runners moved up on a passed ball, Snead scored when Caroline Ross singled through the right side of the infield.    The Styx tied the score in the bottom of the fifth, but the Rampage came back with the winning run in the top of the sixth when Heitmann beat out a bunt, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Snead and, after Aspiazu walked, VanRiper singled to right to drive in Heitmann with what proved to be the winning run.
Suffrin put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the sixth but Snead, working in relief of Heitmann, got the final out when third baseman Alli Esposito made a nice running catch on a popup in foul territory.
Heitmann and Snead combined on a two-hitter for the win, Heitmann starting and working four innings and allowing one run (earned) on one hit and seven walks while striking out seven and Snead, who got  the win, throwing the last two innings of scoreless, one-hit ball with one strikeout and one walk.
The Rampage had to rally to win the morning game, scoring three times in the last two innings to overcome a 4-2 Mount Olive lead.
Heitmann singled and Snead tripled for the Rampage's first-inning run only to have Mount Olive scored three times in its half of the first to take a quick 3-1 lead.
In the third inning, Danica Lee singled but was thrown out trying to get to third when Heitmann followed with a single to right. Heitmann, who took second on the throw, then scored when Snead followed with a single.
Mount Olive added another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead, but the Rampage made it 4-3 in the top of the fifth when Heitmann hit a one-out triple for her third hit of the day and scored when Snead grounded out to second for her third RBI of the day.
In the top of the sixth, VanRiper led off with a single and Ingling walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. Perna moved both runners along with a sacrifice bunt and Esposito put down another bunt to load the bases as VanRiper was forced to hold third on the play.    Ross followed with a single to bring in VanRiper with the tying run and, after a strikeout, Lee followed with another single to bring in Ingling with what proved to be the winning run.    Heitmann, the starting and winning pitcher for the Rampage, retired the side in order in the bottom of the sixth - two strikeouts and a comebacker to end it - to eliminate the tournament's No. 1 seed.
Heitmann pitched a complete-game, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out 11.
The day before - Saturday, April 30 - the Rampage won two of the three seeding games played at Woodmont Field in Montville to gain their No. 8 seed in the Gold Division of the 16-team tournament. Teams seeded No. 9 through No. 16 played for the Silver Division championship.
The Rampage opened with an 11-1 victory over the West Milford Xtreme in a morning game; lost a 10-7 decision to the Robbinsville Rampage in an early afternoon game; and then edged the Denville Blue Demons, 6-5, in the final seeding game in the evening.
Heitmann pitched a five-inning two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and four walks against West Milford. Aspiazu was 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. VanRiper and Devon Cavallone were each 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
In the loss to Robbinsville, the Rampage fell behind 7-0 after three innings and couldn't scramble all the way back, closing to within two runs with a five-run fourth inning only to see Robbinsville answer with three more runs in its half of the inning. Snead and Lee each had two hits to lead the Rampage's 10-hit attack.
In the final seeding game, the Rampage scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth and final inning on Aspiazu's walk-off single to right-center. Heitmann opened the inning with a triple but held when Snead beat out an infield single before Aspiazu delivered her game-winning hit.
Snead got the win, scattering eight hits and walking four and striking out nine. Heitmann finished 3-for-3 with a triple, double and three runs scored; Snead and Aspiazu were each 2-for-3 with two RBIs; Lee was 1-for-3 with a run scored; and was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
