REGION 1 WRESTLING TOURNAMENT
Rosenberg seeded No. 1;
Ramadan No. 3 for quarters
|
DENVILLE - Morris Knolls sophomore Jan Rosenberg, the District 2 champion who has won 30 matches this season, drew the top seed at 103 as the Region 1 Wrestling Tournament resumes Friday, Feb. 26, with quarterfinal action at Wallkill Valley High School at 5 p.m. District runnersup Adam Ramadan and Jake Homeijer and third-place finisher Steven McKowen will also be in action as the four teammates resume their quest to get to the state finals in Atlantic City the weekend of March 5-7. Rosenberg (30-3), who drew a bye with the other three district champs in the region preliminary round held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, faces No. 8 seed Michael Spadola of Wayne Valley Friday evening. Spadola (22-9), a sophomore, decisioned David Popek of Kittatinny in the prelims. Ramadan (28-6), a senior, was seeded No. 3 at 119 and faces No. 6 seed Derek Conrad (23-8), a Kittatinny sophomore. Conrad pinned Josh Love of West Milford to reach the quarterfinal round. McKowen (31-4), a sophomore, drew the No. 7 seed at 125 and faces No. 2 seed Garrett Scrivani (23-5), a junior from Kittatinny. Scrivani, the District 3 champion, had a bye in the preliminary round. Homeijer, a junior who posted a 24-8 record this season, was seeded No. 7 at 171 and faces No. 2 seed Michael Amada (21-1), a junior from Mount Olive. Amada, the District 1 champion, had a bye in the prelims. The tournament continues Saturday, Feb. 27, at 9 a.m. with semifinals, wrestlebacks and consolation rounds. The title bouts are expected to start at 6 p.m. If Friday's competition is postponed by weather, the quarterfinals, semifinals and wrestlebacks will be held Saturday, Feb. 27, with wrestling starting at 9 a.m. The consolations and championship bouts will be moved to Sunday, Feb. 28, at a time that has yet to be determined. ---
Ramadan, McKowen, Homeijer win Region prelims
DENVILLE - Adam Ramadan was "great" ... Steve McKowen was "quick" ... and Luke Homeijer’s performance was "awesome." This is how Morris Knolls wrestling coach Larry Rizzo explained his wrestlers' performances after they advanced to the quarterfinals of the Region 1 Wrestling Tournament being held at Wallkill Valley High School After Tuesday's (Feb. 23) preliminary-round action had ended, it didn’t take long for all Eagle eyes to turn to Friday, Feb. 26, when the quarterfinal round will be held at Wallkill starting at 5 p.m. The eight remaining wrestlers in each weight class (all district champs had a bye for the prelims) will be seeded for Friday's quarterfinals. The semifinals, wrestleback and consolation rounds will be held Saturday, Feb. 27, starting at 9 a.m. with the title bouts ae scheduled for 5 p.m. In the event Friday’s action is postponed by weather, the quarterfinals, semifinals and wrestlebacks will be held Saturday starting at 9 a.m. and the consolation round and title bouts will be held Sunday at a time that has yet to be determined. The top three wrestlers in each weight class from the eight regional tournaments advance to the state tournament at Atlantic City on March 5-6-7. Four Morris Knolls wrestlers will attempt to take their next step toward the states when Ramadan, McKowen and Homeijer and District 2 champ sophomore Jan Rosenberg (30-3 at 103) suit up for the quarters. As to how they got there, Ramadan (a senior who is now 28-6 for the season), decisioned Mike Felicetta of Pompton Lakes, 11-3, in their bout at 119 to get the Eagles evening started off on the right foot. "Ramadan lost to Felicetta 20-15 in a wild match earlier in the season," Rizzo said the morning following the match. "He gave up an early takedown but was in control the rest of the way and wrestled smart to get the win. He wrestled great ... and we think he has a very realistic shot at placing in the top three." McKowen (31-4), a sophomore, had pinned Jim Pier, his Tuesday opponent at 125, earlier in the season and McKowen didn’t give his opponent much of a chance for revenge as McKowen took all of 26 seconds to pin Pier yet again. "Steve took down the guy with a fireman's carry and put him right onto his back and pinned him -- it was that quick," Rizzo said. "I don’t think he even worked up a sweat." Homeijer, a junior, continued his late season surge by coming from behind to beat Nick DellaFerra of Wayne Valley, 7-6, in their 171-pound battle. "Homeijer scored two takedowns in the last 50 seconds to win his match ... it was an awesome performance," Rizzo said. "After starting out 5-5, Homeijer is now 24-8 and really looking forward to wrestling Friday night." Three other Eagles - John Arbelaez (130), Kevin Weis (152) and Steven Lane (215) - also qualified for the regional tournament but suffered preliminary-round losses Tuesday evening. Arbelaez (17-14) lost a 3-1 decision to Mike Sickles of West Morris; Weis (19-3) was beaten 9-2 by Anthony Vasile; and Lane (16-12) was edged out, 3-2, by Khalid Zubaydi of Hackettstown. "Arbelaez lost a close one ... he almost had a takedown in the first period but he rushed his finish and didn’t get it," Rizzo said. "As it turned out, he could have used those two points. "Weis lost a superior wrestler, but Kevin still had a great season for us. He won a combined total of 10 matches in his freshman and sophomore years and won 37 in his last two years. He has a lot of reasons to be proud of what he accomplished in his four years here. "“Lane was up against a guy who had pinned him earlier in the season and was doing a good job against him this time. He had a great opportunity to win the match in the third period but it just didn’t happen. In only two years of varsity wrestling, Lane has come a long way for us." Lane and Weis are seniors - their Morris Knolls wrestling has ended. Arbelaez is a sophomore whose season has ended but who will get two more chances to make it through the regions for that coveted trip to Atlantic City. "“He told me he can’t wait to get started on next year," Rizzo said. Notes: Rizzo informs that Knolls grad Danny Herr has a 31-6 record at The College of New Jersey and has qualified as a wild-card entry for the National D-III tournament that starts in two weeks ... "Naturally, we are very proud of him," Rizzo says.

Rosenberg wins districts; moves on with six teammates
DENVILLE - The Eagles have landed ... all of them ... seven-for-seven ... a clean sweep. The two-day District 2 wrestling tournament held at Hopatcong High School on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20, brought out the best in the wrestlers at Morris Knolls High School as all seven Eagles who reached the quarterfinals advanced to the Region 1 competition that starts Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Wallkill Valley High School. Seven-for-seven. Morris Knolls 103-pounder Jan Rosenberg is moving on to the regionals as a district champion. He was also named the Outstanding Wrestler for the District 2 tournament. Eagles Adam Ramadan, John Arbelaez, Kevin Weis and Luke Homeijer are advancing as district runnerups and Steve McKowen and Steven Lane won their consolation bouts and are moving on as third-place finishers. As a team, Morris Knolls finished third in the nine-team field, trailing only team champion Montville and runnerup Randolph. Montville, the pre-tournament favorite to win the District 2 title, scored 164 points to Randolph’s 138. Morris Knolls finished with 120 points and was followed by Lenape Valley (4th, 113 points); Robury (5th, 110); Hopatcong (6th, 102); Morris Hills (7th, 59); Dover (8th, 51); and Morris Catholic (9th, 43). "The team wrestled the best they have all season," an elated Morris Knolls coach Larry Rizzo said the day after the tournament had ended. "I really enjoyed watching them compete ... even the guys who lost on Friday have a lot about which to be proud." Rosenberg, a sophomore and No. 2 seed at 103-pounds, won his title with a 3-1 decision over top-seeded Joe Cruz of Hopatcong, reversing an 8-5 loss he suffered at the hands of Cruz in a dual meet a month ago. Rosenberg reached the title bout with a 3-2 victory over No. 3 seed Matt Benvenuto of Lenape Valley and will take a 30-3 record with him into the regions. "“Jan was awesome ... he wrestled Cruz with a lot of confidence and did what he had to do to win," Rizzo said. "He's looking at a No. 1 seed in the regions but understands just how tough it will be ... he’ll be focused." Ramadan, a senior who will take a 27-6 record into the regions, lost a 5-3 decision to top-seed Dan Haines of Hopatcong in their 119-pound title bout. Earlier, Ramadan beat No. 3 seed Ray Timpani of Randolph, 5-2, in their semifinal bout. "Adam wrestled well against Haines, a state place-winner last year who has much more tournament experience that Adam," Rizzo said. "Adam has already beaten several guys in his weight class at the regions, so he's looking forward to the week and seeing just how far he can go." Arbeleaz, a sophomore who was seeded No. 3 at 130, is 17-13 after falling to top-seed David Restivo of Roxbury, 7-6, in their championship bout. Arbeleaz reached the title round by beating No. 2 seed Joey Moran of Morris Hills, 4-3 in overtime. "Jon nearly pulled off the upset of the tournament against Restivo," Rizzo said. "He was up by three points with 20 seconds to go, but got reversed to his back," Rizzo said. "It happened very quickly and it was a tough thing to watch ... but he understands what happened and what he needs to do to make sure it doesn’t happen again." Weis, a senior and a No. 3 seed at 152, will take a 19-12 record into regional competition after being pinned by top-seed Mike Intile of Montville at 5:23 of their championship bout. Weis defeated No. 2 seed Mike Rampone of Randolph, 6-1, in the semifinal round. "“Kevin wrestled the match of his career against Rampone, a kid to whom he has lost three times in his career with the most recent in the county tournament ... Kevin kept the match close and put him in a head lock with about 35 seconds left to clinch the win," Rizzo said. "As for his match against Intile ... well, Intile just happens to be one of the best around at 152." Homeijer, the No. 2 seed at 171, is now 23-8 after his runnerup finish at Hopatcong. Homeijer, a junior, pinned No. 3 seed Dan Harris of Dover in 5:49 of their semifinal match before losing a 10-4 decision to top-seed Mike LaBell of Lenape Valley in the title bout. "Luke has been wrestling great the last four weeks and he continued along those lines in the districts ... we're really anxious to see how he matches up at Wallkill," Rizzo said. "If he had avoided some early backpoints against LaBell, he just might have pulled off an upset." McKowen, a sophomore and No. 3 seed at 125 for the districts, is 30-4 after beating No. 4 seed Ryan Schaible of Dover, 5-1, in the consolations. McKowen went into the consolation round after losing to No. 2 seed Chris Benvenuto in the semifinal round. "For some reason, Steve didn't seem very focused in his semifinal loss to Benvenuto ... but he rebounded nicely and came out ready to go and won his consolation," Rizzo said. "He is our only guy with region experience and we’re looking to see how he matches up, too." Lane is now 16-11 after the Knolls senior, seeded No. 5 at 215, was pinned in the semifinals by top-seed and eventual champ Taylor Bernstein of Montville. Lane, too, bounced back to secure a spot in the regions with a pin over No. 3 Dave Maddison of Roxbury in their consolation. "“Steven beat two guys over the weekend he had lost to earlier this season," Rizzo said. "He has been somewhat inconsistent all year, so hopefully making it to the regions will inspire him." Rizzo will use this past weekend's performance by his wrestlers as a teaching tool for his younger wrestlers. "“I want them to see how this sport works when you work hard in practice and keep thinking positive thoughts," Rizzo explained. "Our guys proved this weekened it doesn't matter who you wrestle or what happened before, if you prepare physically and mentally you can be successful in not only wrestling, but in other sports ... and in life situations, too. "I don’t want to get all philosophical here, but that’s why we do all this in hopes our kids will learn to prepare themselves for all the challenges they face will face - both on and off the mat." Notes: The top three finishers in Districts 1, 2, 3 and 4 will compete in the Region 1 tourney at Wallkill ... the district champion in each weight class gets a first-round bye while the eight second- and third-place finishers in each weight class will be seeded on Monday, Feb. 22 ... the first round of wrestling will be conducted on Tuesday, Feb. 23, starting at 5 p.m. ... Tuesday’s winners will be seeded along with the district champions in each weight class on Wednesday, Feb. 24, and the quarterfinals will be held Friday, Feb. 26, starting at 5 p.m. ... wrestling continues on Saturday, Feb. 27, starting at 9 a.m. with semifinal-round bouts followed by consolation-round bouts and the title bouts. ...

Hopatcong is sixth with 50 points followed by Dover (42), Morris Hills (38) and Morris Catholic (30) to round out the nine-team field. Rosenberg (27-3), the No. 2 seed at 103, had the easiest time of the seven advancing Eagles as he drew a bye into the semifinal round. Ramadan (25-5), also a No. 2 seed, won an 18-6 major decision over No. 7 seed Alex Poggi of Roxbury in their bout at 119. McKowen (29-3), seeded No. 3 at 125, pinned No. 6 seed Michael LaRusso of Roxbury at 4:48. Arbelaez (16-12), the No. 3 seed at 130, defeated No. 6 seed A.J. Barros of Randolph. In a battle of opposing football quarterbacks, No. 3 seed Weis (18-11) defeated No. 6 seed Willie Rzucidlo of Morris Hills, 3-1, at 152. Luke Homijer (22-7), the No. 2 seed at 171, got the quickest Eagle pin of the quarters when he stopped No. 7 seed Matt DeFranco of Morris Catholic at 2:10. Eagles finish season with 12-9 record
DENVILLE - The Morris Knolls High School wrestling team ended its dual-meet season with two victories at the Roxbury Quad Fest at Roxbury High School on Saturday, Feb. 13, and coach Larry Rizzo & Co. are now looking ahead to the districts that start Friday, Feb. 19, at Hopatcong High School. Rizzo enters the post-season with mixed emotions after his Eagles defeated Belvidere, 42-13, and Elmwood Park, 53-20, at Roxbury. "Although we finished with a winning record (12-9) and we were 9-4 in our last month, its a bittersweet feeling because we know we could have done better ... we had our chances to do better, but couldnt take advantage of them," Rizzo says. "If we made a movie of our season, it would be titled 'Missed Opportunities.'" Rizzo's Eagles missed qualifying for the team section tournament by one victory as the team record was 7-8 at the cutoff date. They were No. 3 in the section according to their Power Point rating at the time, too. Looking ahead, the Rizzo feels he has a handful of wrestlers who will be seeded in the "... top two or three" for the districts and another group who "...will get a real tough match on Friday night, but still have a chance to place." Jan Rosenberg (27-3 at 103), Adam Ramadan (25-5 at 119), Steve McKowen (28-3 at 125) and Luke Homeijer (21-7) figure to land top seeds while Rizzo feels that Jon Arbelaez (15-12 at 130), Kevin Weis (17-11 at 152), Steve Lane (14-10 at 215), Padric Hartnett (13-16 at 145), Michael Main (4-6 at 140), Mike Rettino (9-7 at 160) and heavyweight Joe Flora (16-13) could make some noise if they get past Friday night. At Roxbury, the Eagles won 9 of the 13 bouts against Belvidere (8-11) and won 10 of the 14 bouts contested against Elmwood Park (7-14) with Main, Luke Homeijer and Rosenberg each winning twice by pins. Main registered pin wins at 3:02 and 3:30 at 140; Luke Homeijer stopped his opponents at 1:09 and 4:28 at 189; and Rosenberg got his pins at 2:50 and 4:08 at 103. Ramadan had a pin at 1:47 and a forfeit win at 119; McKowen got a 30-second pin at 130 and won by forfeit at 125; and Weis won 6-4 and 5-0 decisions at 152 for the other Knolls double-winners. Other winners for the Eagles against Belvidere included Joe Parisi, who won a 3-1 decision at 160; Rettino, who won 4-2 at 171; and Lane, a 3-2 winner at 215. Against Elmwood Park, Jon Arbelaez won by pin at 3:27 at 130; Hartnett won a 7-1 decision at 145; and Jake Homeijer (215) and Flora (Hwt.) won by forfeit. The "Big Three" of McKowen, Rosenberg and Ramadan - or, as Rizzo calls them, "The Three Amigos" - will take a combined 80-11 record into the districts.

Hartnett OT win helps Knolls hold off Hills
DENVILLE - All it took for Larry Rizzo & Co. to forget the disappointments of the week was a good, old-fashioned back-and-forth struggle with their good friends from up the road. And that's exactly what the Morris Knolls wrestling team got when it beat sister-school Morris Hills, 32-22, in a high school wrestling match held at Knolls on Friday, Feb. 5. Both teams had failed to qualify for the NJSIAAs six-team sectional team championships as Morris Knolls failed to post a .500 or better record (the Eagles were 8-9) in North 2, Group 3 and Morris Hills (9-7 at the cutoff) failed by .2 of a point to have one of the top six power-point ratings needed to qualify. "We had our chances in several matches earlier in the season and for one reason or another didnt get it done," Rizzo explains. "But it still tough to take when you look at the six teams that qualified and know that we beat the No. 1 seed (Warren Hills) and No. 3 seed (West Morris) and the No. 6 seed (Millburn) lost to Morris Hills by 10. "Hopefully, our kids will learn from this and make up for it later in life ... which is really why we all do this stuff, anyway." As for the match against Morris Hills, Knolls took a seemingly safe 15-point lead on Adam Ramadan's tech fall win at 119 and a Steve McKowen pin at 125. But Morris Hills ran off three victories get back to within four points of Knolls with two bouts left. "At that point, I thought it was going to be their night," Rizzo says. "But then Padric Hartnett won in overtime to clinch the meet and the crowd went crazy." If Morris Knolls vs. Morris Hills was close, then Hartnett vs. Willie Rzucidlo of Morris Hills was even closer as the two 145-pounders battled to a 2-2 draw after three two-minute periods. Hartnett got the 4-2 win on a takedown in overtime to clinch the match for Morris Knolls. "I cant say enough about Hartnett's victory ... the match was on the line and he came through ... it's something hell never forget because everybody went crazy," Rizzo says. "Rzucidlo is a tough kid and he wrestled a good match, too ... he has nothing to feel bad about." Kevin Weis, Knolls' 152-pounder, followed with a 3-2 decision over Cody Sternlicht that "... was just icing on the cake ... another very good match and something Weis really needed, too. "Luke Homeijer, A.J. Latuja and Steven Lane gave us outstanding efforts ... as did the 'Three Amigos' - (Jan) Rosenberg, Ramadan and McKowen. Homeijer decisioned Joe Casale, 6-1, at 171; Latuja got a pin win at 4:22; and Lane decisioned Michael Clifford, 5-1, at 215 in the fourth bout of the evening. Rosenberg improved to 25-3 on the year with an 11-3 win over Brandon Acevedo; Ramadan (24-5) won via a 20-4 tech fall; and McKowen is 25-3 at after his pin win at 5:53 of his 125-pound bout. Rizzo and Morris Hills wrestling coach Joe Barchetto - Rizzos assistant at Knolls before taking the Hills head coaching job two seasons ago - had talked earlier in the week and Rizzo had predicted the match would be close and might even come down to the Weis-Sternlicht bout. "Then we found out the match was going to end with that bout," Rizzo says. "t was just something else to add to the drama of it all." But Hartnett took care of that with his OT win at 145 ... and the drama ended as fans poured out onto the floor to greet their heroes. "Its nice for our guys to have a win like this, but we need to keep in mind that our goal was to make the team playoffs and we did not do that," Rizzo says. "Now we need to get as many guys as possible through to the regions by placing in the top three of the districts. "That is what well be focusing on from here on out." ---
Eagles rally to beat Montgomery for 9th win
DENVILLE - Morris Knolls, down 12-0 after losing the first four matches of its dual meet against Montgomery, came storming back and won nine of the last 10 bouts to register a 42-18 victory in a high school wrestling match held at Knolls on Wednesday, Feb .3. Freshman Mike Rettino broke put Morris Knolls (9-9) on the scoreboard with a 1:55 pin win at 160 and, when Kyle Smith picked up forfeit points at 171, the teams were tied, 12-12. Luke Homeijer (187), Steven Lane (215) and heavyweight Joe Flora followed with pins - all in the first period - before Montgomery picked up its fifth win of the night on a pin. Adam Ramadan (119) and Steven McKowen (125) each won by first-period pins with McKowens 59-second pin win the quickest of the night for the Eagles. Jon Arbelaez won by injury default at 130. Notes: There was no match at 103, leaving Jan Rosenberg at 24-3 for the season ... McKowen improved to 24-3 and Ramadan is now 23-5 after his win ... Homeijer improved his season record to 18-7 and Lane is now 15-11 ... weather permitting, Knolls plays host to sister-school Morris Hills Friday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m.

Rosenberg, Ramadan 2nd in county tourney
DENVILLE - A top ten finish for the team ... two wrestlers in championship matches ... a fourth, a fifth and a sixth-place finish. Larry Rizzo will take it. "We had a successful tournament," the Morris Knolls High School wrestling coach said after his team finished 10th in the 23-team field of the Morris County Wrestling Tournament. "Finishing in the top ten was nice." Delbarton, as was expected, won the team title with 144 points with Randolph (124.5), Pequannock (109), Roxbury (91) and Montville (87) rounding out the top five in the two-day competition that was held at Mount Olive High School on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29-30. Jan Rosenberg, the No. 3 seed at 103, made it to the championship bout where he lost a 1-0 decision to No. 5 seed Patsy Davis of Madison. Adam Ramadan, the No. 3 seed at 119, also made it to the final round where he lost a 4-3 decision to No. 4 seed Matt Albano of Delbarton. Steve McKowen, the No. 4 seed at 125, finished fourth when he lost a 12-6 decision to No. 2 seed Nick Giordano of Hanover Park in the third-place consolation bout. Luke Homeijer, the No. 8 seed at 171, finished fifth when he decisioned No. 4 seed Joe Casale of Morris Hills, 8-5, in the fifth-sixth wrestlebacks. Steven Lane, the No. 7 seed at 215, finished sixth in his weight class when he lost a 4-3 decision to unseeded Dave Maddison of Roxbury in the fifth-sixth wrestlebacks. "Rosenberg lost 1-0 to a guy coming down from 112 and from another region," Rizzo said after the tournament. "There is nothing to be concerned with there. "Rosenbergs best match of the tournament was in the semifinal when he pinned Pat Healy of Jefferson (the No. 4 seed) at 4:59 when he was losing 5-2. Healy is a quality guy who Jan beat by only one point earlier in the year. He took him down and pinned him ... the move seemed to take forever and it was very suspenseful to watch." Rosenberg, who is now 24-3 for the season, decisioned No. 8 seed Frank Crippen of Morristown, 5-2, in their quarterfinal-round bout to kickoff Saturdays wrestling. "Ramadan wrestled a nice tournament but got a little passive on his feet in the final," Rizzo said. "He's a two-time place winner in the county tournament now ... nothing to be ashamed of there at all." Ramadan, now 21-5 for the season, opened the day with a 9-5 decision over unseeded Brendon Carcuffe of West Morris and then beat No. 7 seed Ben Conover of Madison in the semifinal round to reach the title bout against Albano. "McKowen had a great quarterfinal, majoring a guy he beat by only two points earlier in the season,"Rizzo said. "He needs to improve on a few things to get ready for a strong post-season run and the two losses he suffered in the tournament this weekend helped show him what he has to do. "I often say that coaches tell the wrestlers what they need to do, but their opponents teach it to them." McKowen, who is now 24-3, opened the day with a 12-5 decision over No. 5 seed Nick Matthews of West Morris before losing a 12-7 decision to top-seed and eventual champion Mike Polizzi of Montville in the semifinals before losing to Giordano. "Luke Homeijer had an excellent tournament," Rizzo added. "He wrestled Mike Lomio of Hanover Park very hard and then beat Joey Casale, who is also having an excellent season for Morris Hills." Homeijer, now 17-7 for the season, opened the day by losing a 7-3 decision to the top-seeded and eventual champ Lomio in the quarterfinals. He then decisioned unseeded Blaze Feury of Delbarton, 9-4, in the wrestleback semifinals before beating No. 4 seed Casale, 8-5, in the fifth-sixth wrestleback. Lane, now 14-11, was pinned in the quarters by No. 2 seed Derrick Flitcroft of Delbarton, and beat No. 6 seed Ron Tancer of Montville, 8-6, in the wrestlback semifinals before losing to Maddison in the fifth-sixth wrestlebacks. Heavyweight Joe Flora, the sixth Morris Knolls wrestler to reach the quarterfinal round, lost a 9-0 decision to top-seed and eventual runnerup Mike Spencer of Pequannock and then lost a 10-0 decision to No. 5 seed Joe Yarosz of Morris Catholic in the wrestleback semifinals. "We were a little disappointed about missing out on qualifying for the team sectionals," Rizzo said. "But now we have two weeks to get ready for the districts and concentrate on fine tuning our technique. "We also have a match with Morris Hills this Friday (Feb. 5 at Knolls, 7 p.m.) and that is going to be a very interesting competition, too."

Eagles lose in bid to qualify for team sectional tourney
DENVILLE - The Morris Knolls High School wrestling team lost out on its efforts to qualify for the NJSIAA's Team Sectional Tournament in the space of seven matches Wednesday (Jan. 27) night in the Eagles 37-24 dual meet defeat at the hands of Lenape Valley at Lenape Valley. Morris Knolls (8-9) had to have the victory to attain the .500 (or better) record it needed by the Saturday, Jan. 30 cutoff in order to qualify for the selection process of the six-team North 2, Group 3 section. The Eagles trailed 12-6 after the first four bouts of the night only to have Lenape Valley (7-7) win the next seven matches to take a 37-6 lead before Steven Lane (215) could stop the bleeding with a pin win at 3:30. Heavyweight Joe Flora followed with a pin win at 3:49 and Jan Rosenberg added six team points with a forfeit victory at 103 to end the match. The only other winners the Eagles had came at 125 where Adam Ramadan won a 4-2 decision and at 130 where Steven McKowen also won a 4-2 decision. As of Monday, Jan. 24, the Eagles were third in the Power Point ratings in North 2, Group 3 but, according to the NJSIAA, still needed a .500 team record to be considered for the qualification process for the six-team sectional tournament. Lenape Valley was 6-6 and on top of the North 1, Group 2 Power Point ratings but, after losing a dual meet to Wallkill Valley earlier in the week, still needed to beat Morris Knolls to get the .500 record it needed to qualify for the sectional team tournament. Notes: McKowen improved to 22-1 with his victory while Rosenberg is now 21-2 and Ramadan 18-4 to give the Big Three a combined 61-7 record for the season ... Flora improved to 13-9 with his pin win. ...

McKowen gets three pins as MK goes 1-2 at Vernon quad
DENVILLE - Steve McKowen has been enjoying a successful sophomore wrestling season at Morris Knolls High School, winning 21 of 22 bouts. This past Saturday (Jan. 23), however, might have been his finest hour. Wrestling twice at 125 and moving up to 130 for a third bout, McKowen registered pins in all three of his matches in a quad held at Vernon High School with Millburn, Wallkill Valley and the host Vernon school providing the opposition. Morris Knolls was 2-1 for the afternoon to climb back to the .500 mark at 8-8. The Eagles beat Pompton Lakes, 39-25, and Vernon, 48-27, but lost a 38-34 decision to Wallkill Valley when each team won seven bouts, but Wallkill got more bonus points.
"It was a successful day for us," Morris Knolls wrestling coach Larry Rizzo said after the competion had ended. "We had one of our best matches of the season in our loss to Wallkill Valley ... they have three potential state place winners and we had to find our places to win in order to beat them. We were on our way, too, but one of their kids pulled an upset, giving them a close win. McKowen got one pin early ... he got one pin late ... he got one pin in the middle of the bout.. His quickest pin came against Wallkill Valley when he stopped Jason Burdzy in 1:08 of their 130-pound bout. McKowen registered a second-period pin when he packed Jim Pier of Vernon in 2:15 of their bout at 125. His third-period pin came with four seconds to go in his bout against Bill Secor of Pompton Lakes. He now has 10 pins for the season. "Steven has been a very consistent wrestler for us this year ...something he wasnt as a junior, Rizzo said. His only loss was to a state place winner from Seton Hall in our holiday tournament. When we have needed points in a match he always seems to be there to get them. He is cagey and when his opponents make a mistake, he capitalizes on it. Sophomore Jan Rosenberg was also 3-0 - all at 103 - to improve his season record to 20-2. He pinned Dante Amato of Pompton Lake in 52 seconds; dropped Jake Levy of Vernon in 1:16; and picked up a forfeit victory against Wallkill Valley. Freshman Mike Rettino also had two pins in winning three bouts. He pinned Ted Houlis of Pompton Lakes in 2:28 at 171; stopped Myles Carney of Vernon in 48 seconds of their bout at 160; and edged Vinnie Sanfillipo of Wallkill Valley, 10-9, in their bout at 160. Luke Homeijer was also 3-0 Saturday, pinning Matt McConville of Wallkill Valley in 3:11 at 189; beating Casey Baumgaertel of Pompton Lakes, 8-6, at 189; and winning an 8-2 decision from Joel Griffeth of Vernon at 171. Heavyweight Joe Flora also had a perfect day, pinning Andrew Grosser of Pompton Lakes in 3:53; majoring Travis Mullins of Wallkill Valley, 10-0; and taking a 7-0 decision from Vernon heavyweight John Gemeinhardt. "Rettino, Homeijer and Flora also had outstanding days for us," Rizzo said. Rettino is 7-3 as a freshman ... Homeijer is now 14-5 ... and Flora is starting to turn it around and has a 12-9 record. Adam Ramadan was 2-1 at 119 and is now 17-4 for the season. Ramadan decisioned Joe Hocking of Wallkill Valley, 12-5; pinned Steve Fitzsimmons of Vernon in 1:43; and lost a wild 20-15 decision to Mike Felicetta of Pompton Lakes. Ramadan, Rosenberg and McKowen - the Eagles Big Three - were 8-1 on the day and now have a season-long combined record of 58-7. Steven Lane was 2-1 with two pin wins at 215; Kevin Weis was 2-1 with two pin wins at 152; Padric Hartnett was 2-1 with a pin at 145; and Jon Arbeleaz was 1-2 at 135 for the Eagles. "So it looks as if were going to have to beat Lenape Valley Wednesday night in order to earn our way into the state playoffs," Rizzo said. "Hopefully, well have one more outstanding effort left in us when we face them. Morris Knolls faces Lenape Valley at Lenape Valley on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. The two-day Morris County Wrestling Tournament is next for the Eagles, opening on Friday, Jan. 29, at 4 p.m at Mount Olive High School and continuing the next day (Saturday, Jan. 30) at Mount Olive with wrestling starting at 9 a.m.

Hopatcong six-bout streak too much for MK to overcome
DENVILLE - Morris Knolls made the most of its five victories but couldnt overcome Hopatcong's six-bout mid-meet winning streak and dropped a 36-28 decision to the Chiefs in a wrestling match held at Hopatcong High School on Thursday, Jan. 21. The Eagles got two pin wins, two wins by forfeit and one major decision to earn bonus points on all five of their victories. Included in the Eagles six-bout skid were losses by two of the teams "Big Three" as Jan Rosenberg (17-2) lost for only the second time this season, bowing to Hopatcong's Joe Cruz, 8-5; and Adam Ramadan (15-3) lost his third match of the season when Hopatcongs Giancarlo Cruz won their bout at 119 by the same 8-5 score. The three top winners for the Eagles now have a combined record of 50-7 for the season. Steven McKowen, the third member of the "Big Three," improved his record to 18-1 with a 2:24 pin win over John Wilkerson in their bout at 130. McKowen's win stopped the Eagles' slide momentarily as Hopatcong's lead was cut to 27-18 with four matches left in the meet. Morris Knolls (6-7) had a 12-3 lead after three matches when George Murden (171) and Luke Homeijer (189) were awarded forfeit victories. Hopatcong (4-7) then went on its six-bout run to take the lead at 27-12 going into McKowens match. After McKowen's pin cut the Hopatcong lead to nine points, the Chiefs won the next two bouts to seal the victory. Padrick Hartnett and John Malazinsky finished out the card with wins for the Eagles as Hartnett majored Wyatt Gehring, 10-1, in their bout at 145 and Malazinsky pinned Alex Ioffredo at 4:52 of their bout at 152. ---
Knolls back at .500 after 36-26 loss to Roxbury
DENVILLE - Morris Knolls went through a five-bout losing streak that allowed Roxbury to pick up 27 key points on its way to a 36-26 victory over the Eagles in a dual meet held at Knolls on Wednesday, Jan. 20.
Each team won seven bouts, but Roxbury got five six-point victories (four pins and a forfeit) to Knolls' one pin with two other major decisions to account for the 10-point difference. Roxbury (7-4) opened with a pin, but Adam Ramadan and Steve McKowen each followed with major decision victories to give the Eagles (6-6) an early 8-6 lead. Roxbury came right back to win the next five bouts - three by pin, one decision and one by forfeit - to take a 33-8 lead that was too much to overcome for Morris Knolls even though the Eagles closed the match by winning five of the last six bouts - four by decision. Ramadan, McKowen and Jan Rosenberg - the Eagles "Big Three" - each won to improve their combined record to 49-4. McKowen and Rosenberg are each 17-1 and Ramadan is 15-2. Ramadan got the first points for Knolls when he majored Nick Bautz, 11-3, at 119 in the second bout of the night. McKowen followed with an 11-1 victory over David Schubiger in their bout at 125 and then Roxbury won the next five. Kevin Weis (160) broke the Gaels winning streak with a 6-4 decision over Willy Volz; Luke Homeijer (171) followed with a 10-3 decision over Anthony Maiorana; and A.J. Latuja (189) squeaked out a 6-5 verdict over Mike Mahoney. Heavyweight Joe Flora won his bout by forfeit and Rosenberg (103) closed out the match with a 9-3 decision over C.J. Caserta. ---
Knolls now 6-5 after three wins at quad
DENVILLE - They won by rallying late ... they won by rallying early ... and they showed they could win up front as the Morris Knolls High School wrestling team walked out of their own gym with three dual meet victories on Saturday, Jan. 16. Twice against West Morris, the Eagles overcame early deficits for a 27-23 victory; in their match against Warren Hills, the Eagles won four of the first five bouts and held on for a 38-35 victory; and, in their finest match of the day, the Eagles won the last four bouts on the card for a 31-28 victory over Jefferson, a team that had come into the four-team competition with an 8-1 record. The three wins gave the Eagles a five-match winning streak, a 6-5 record and, more importantly according to Knolls head coach Larry Rizzo, "... a chance to be in the state playoff hunt. These kids accepted the challenge today and went out and beat three very good wrestling teams," Rizzo added. "I cant say enough about the team effort .,.. guys were bouncing around weight classes for the sake of the team ... there was no selfishness, they just went out and did their jobs." Although six Eagles won all three of their bouts during the morning/afternoon quad, the first wrestler that Rizzo mentioned by name was Chris Quadrel, who went 1-2 at 130. Quadrel lost his first two bouts of the morning on tech falls before earning what Rizzo calls a huge pin win against Jefferson. "We call him Chris 'After Ten' Quadrel ... he doesnt do well before 10 a.m.," Rizzo said with a laugh. "But he didnt get down on himself after those two losses and he came back against Jefferson with a big pin to put us in position to win the match." Quadrel came off his two tech fall losses (21-4 in the West Morris match; 19-4 against Warren Hills) and pinned Adam Riley of Jefferson in 3:53 in the next to last bout on the card to pull the Eagles into a 28-28 tie after they had been trailing 28-13. Jon Arbelaez (135) won the winner-take-all bout by decisioning the Falcons Kellan Moran, 8-5. It was Arbelaez' second clinching win of a 3-0 day. He also scored the deciding points in the win over Warren Hills when he decisioned Kevin Bundschuh, 9-4, giving the Eagles an insurmountable lead with two bouts left. "Arbelaez had a big win in the West Morris match, too," Rizzo said. "He beat Mike Sickles, 5-3, a kid who had beaten him last year. "We made Arbelaez our 'Wrestler of the Week' for all that he had done." The other 3-0 wrestlers on the day were Kevin Weis (152, 160), Luke Homeijer (171, 189), Jan Rosenberg (103), Adam Ramadan (119) and Steve McKowen (125). Weis had two pins and a major decision and Homeijer finished with a major decision and two decisions. Rosenberg, Ramadan and McKowen - the Eagles "Big Three" - improved their collective record to 46-4 with their respective 3-0 performances on the day. Rosenberg (16-1) had a pin, major and a 1-0 decision; Ramadan (14-2) won by tech fall, major decision and forfeit; and McKowen (16-1) had a pin and two decisions for his day's work. Padric Hartnet (140, 145) won two of three decisions; heavyweight Joe Flora was 1-2 with a pin win; freshman Mike Rettino (160) won a 9-5 decision in the only bout he wrestled; Steven Lane (215) was 1-2 with a major decision; A.J. Latuja (189) was 1-1 with a pin win. "We have Roxbury (8-4) at home this week (Wednesday, Jan. 20, 7 p.m.) and that could be very exciting," Rizzo said. "Then we go to Hopatcong (Thursday, Jan. 21, 7 p.m.) and then finish the week with a quad (Saturday, Jan. 23) at Vernon with Pompton Lakes and Wallkill Valley." Just another "challenge" on the Eagles' road to the team sectionals playoffs.

The victory was the second straight for Morris Knolls and put the Eagles at 3-5 for the season; Morrisown slipped to 3-5 with the loss. DENVILLE - The five-match losing streak that the Morris Knolls wrestling team has suffered through the past two weeks has ended ... thanks to a pinfest at Sparta where the Eagles earned 48 points via fall on their way to a 60-15 victory over the home team Spartans on Wednesday, Jan. 13. Padric Hartnett got the first pin win at 145 when he took all of 49 seconds to put his opponent on his back. Rosenberg, Ramadan, McKowen, Rettion go 3-0 in quad
DENVILLE - The 'Big Three' came through for the Morris Knolls High School wrestling team as senior Adam Ramadan and sophomores Jan Rosenberg and Steve McKowen each went 3-0 at the Hackettstown Quad at Hackettstown High School on Saturday, Jan. 9. They might have to make room for a freshman, however, as Mike Rettino, who was pinned in his first varsity match against High Point earlier in the week, also turned in a 3-0 record for the afternoon for his first varsity wins. The team record, however, was 0-3 as the Eagles lost to all three opponents at the quad and now have a 1-5 dual meet record that includes five straight losses. Caldwell (5-2) won four of the last five bouts to defeat Knolls, 33-29; Ramapo (3-2) won four of the last six bouts to edge Knolls, 31-27; and Hackettstown (4-0) defeated Knolls, 34-25. In both the Ramapo and Hackettstown meets, each team won seven of the individual bouts but the difference came in the pin wins with Ramapo having a 3-1 edge and Hackettstown a 4-1 advantage in six-point victories. "I thought we wrestled a good Hackettstown team tough," Knolls wrestling coach Larry Rizzo said after the match. "In the other two matches, we needed one big win for one other guy and didnt get it."
Rosenberg (103) improved his dual-meet record to 11-1 by wrestling in only one bout, a 3-1 decision over Tyler Kozimor of Hackettstown. His other two wins came by forfeit. McKowen (125) also improved to 11-1 as he pinned MIke DellaRiva of Caldwell in 1:45; majored Chris Mutterer of Ramapo, 12-0; and majored Robert Napolitano of Hackettstown, 13-5. Ramadan (119) is now 9-2 after pinning NIck Rogers of Caldwell in 3:03; majoring Alex Scheinert of Ramapo, 11-1; and winning a 9-3 decision over Jason Rothman of Hackettstown. Rettino, who is now 3-1, pinned Kevin Bohm of Hackettstown at 5:11; majored Justin Jiminez of Ramapo, 8-0; and decisioned Frank Rogers of Caldwell for his big wins. "Rettino is a ninth-grader who worked his way into the lineup in time to wrestle High Point, where he got pinned," Rizzo said. "He came back nicely, though, and got a big pin for us at the time against Hackettstown when he was losing 7-1 and came back to record a pin win. Steve Lane (215), Jon Arbelaez (130, 135) and Kevin Weis (152) each won two of three bouts for the Eagles. Lane beat Shane Cunningham of Caldwell, 6-2, and Manny Alvarez of Ramapo, 7-4; Arbelaez pinned Dan Gargiulo of Caldwell in 3:02 and decisioned Jordan Perrine of Hackettstown, 12-10; and Weis decisioned John Delduco of Ramapo, 7-0, and Jason Rothman of Hackettstown, 5-4. Heavyweight Joe Flora and Luke Homeijer (171) each got one win for Morris Knolls, Flora beating Pat Taranto of Ramapo, 6-3, and Homeijer edging Tyler Gadmundsson of Hackettstown, 10-8.
--- Eagles beaten by High Point for second loss in a row
DENVILLE - With the dreaded "back-to-back" behind them, the Morris Knolls High School wrestlers can now see if they can fulfill their coaches wishes of having a winning January. The "back-to-back" ended Thursday (Jan. 7) evening with a 46-20 loss to state power and unbeaten High Point in a dual meet at High Point. Part One of the "back-to-back" was a 44-24 loss to Morris County power Randolph the night before. High Point (6-0) is ranked No. 1 in the state in some state polls and No. 1 in Sussex County in all polls. Randolph, in spite of losing its first two matches of the season, has a No. 2 ranking in Morris County (behind Roxbury) in most county-wide polls. "I think High Point took it easy on us by resting some of their key guys," Morris Knolls head coach Larry Rizzo had after match. "Still, we're hoping these two matches have been solid learning experiences for us as we continue with our busy January." The back-to-back losses mean the Eagles will be taking a 1-2 record into their quad meet at Hackettstown on Saturday, Jan. 9. Caldwell and Ramapo are the other two teams participating in the competition that begins at 9 a.m. "Randolph and High Point were tough ... but we're looking at a tough day Saturday, too," Rizzo said. "Hackettstown has an excellent team ... Caldwell is always near the top of Essex County ... and Ramapo is coming off a very good season." Against High Point on Thursday, Chris Quadrel gave Knolls an early 4-0 lead when he majored Alec Alvino, 14-6, in their bout at 135. High Point came back with seven straight wins, however, to take a commanding 37-4 edge -- five of the victories coming on pins. Knolls heavyweight Joe Flora broke the High Point streak with a 58-second pin of Aaron DeMott. Jan Rosenberg followed with a 1-0 decision over Justin Bellis in their bout at 103 and, after High Point won the next two bouts, Steve McKowen and Jon Arbelaez closed out the match with decision wins. McKowen majored Jason Snider, 14-6, in their bout at 125 and Arbelaez beat Connor McHugh, 17-11, in a free-for-all at 130. "Rosenberg got his escape in the second period and then rode out his man the entire third period for his 1-0 win," Rizzo said. "Ramadam's loss was a tough one ... a close call against the returning 103 state champ." Rosenberg and McKowen will each take a 8-1 record into Saturday's quad at Hackettstown while Ramadan is 6-2.

Eagles fall to Morris County power Randolph, 44-24
DENVILLE - The Morris Knolls High School wrestling team squared off against the first of its two county powers on Wednesday, Jan. 6, and came away on the short end of a 44-24 score in a dual meet held at Knolls against Morris County power Randolph. The Eagles won't have too much time to reflect on the loss that saw their record squared at 1-1 because they travel to Sussex County (and state) power High Point on Thursday, Jan. 7, for a 6:30 p.m. meet. "We had some good matches but overall we didnt rise to the occasion as we should have against a team as good as Randolph," said Knolls head coach Larry Rizzo after the meet. "We had a couple of guys who had some bad matches ... but hopefully we will all learn something from this." Knolls' 135-pounder Jon Arbelaez opened the match with a 7-2 decision victory only to have Randolph come back with the next four wins - all on decisions, however, as the Eagles stayed away from losing by pin. Luke Homeijer broke Randolph's streak with a pin win at 5:13 of his 171 bout to cut the lead to 14-9, but the Rams picked up three pin victories in a row before Jan Rosenberg registered the Eagles quickest pin of the night when he stopped his 103-pound opponent in 1:06. Randolph clinched the meet at the next weight and tacked on another pin win before the Eagles closed with two victories. Adam Ramadan got a pin win at 3:16 of his 125-pound bout and Steven McKowen closed out the evening with an 8-4 decision win at 130. "McKowen wrestled one of the best matches I have seen from him," Rizzo said. "We asked him to go up a weight class (from 125 to 130) and he beat a quality kid in Brian Wrede by staying in full control throughout the match. "We got what we expected from Rosenberg and Ramadan and Homeijer's pin win was big for us at the time because it stopped their run of wins. "And now it's High Point tomorrow (Thursday, Jan. 7) night." The win was Randolph's first in three matches for the 2009-2010 season, the Rams having faced two toughs foes themselves in losing to Morris County power Roxbury, 35-28, and state power Phillipsburg, 45-18, earlier in the season. ---
Rosenberg, Ramadan, McKowen win tourney titles
DENVILLE - Morris Knolls wrestling coach Larry Rizzo got just what he wanted out of the Parsippany Chirstmas Tournament on at Parsippany High School on Wednesday, Dec. 28. And it wasn't only the Eagles' three individual titles, four runnerup finishes, and second-place finish as a team that made their coach happy.
"We have 16 matches from the 6th through the 30th in January and we'll be facing some tough competition," Rizzo explained. "We had things we wanted our wrestlers to do and we think we accomplished them. "We're hoping that what the kids did in this tournament will provide us with the springboard to winning more than half of these upcoming matches."
That will be a tall order when you consider Knolls' first two opponents in that stretch. The Eagles kick off their busy January with a 7 p.m. dual meet against Randolph at Knolls on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, and then come right back the next day and travel to High Point for a 7 p.m. match against High Point.
That's the top team in the county and one of the top teams in the state back-to-back.
Sophomores Jan Rosenberg and Steve McKowen and senior Adam Ramadan go into the Randolph dual meet as champions of the Parsippany tourney since Rosenberg won the 103-pound weight class at the Christmas tourney, Ramadan won at 119, and McKowen captured the 123 title. Second-place finishes went to senior Kevin Weis (152), junior Luke Homeijer (189), senior Steve Lane (215) and senior heavyweight Joe Flora. The Eagles finished with 148 team points - the same as the host Parsippany club - to team champ Wayne Valleys 161.5. Boonton was fourth with 114 points; Union was fifth with 89 points; Morris Hills finished sixth with 88 points and Parsippany Hills was seventh with 72 points. Rosenberg won his title with a third-period pin (5:08) of Parsippany's Sam Kovacs; Ramadan went into overtime to beat Jeff Nichols of Wayne Valley, 6-4; and McKowen pinned Jason Zuninga of Wayne Valley at 1:54 of their title match. "I can't say enough about our champions," Rizzo said. "These guys work hard and I was particularly pleased to see Ramadan win the first tournament title of his career. "McKowen was taken down early and it looked as if he was in trouble ... but he never panics and he did a great job in working himself out of it. Rosenberg was clearly the best wrestler at his weight." Weis lost a 1-0 decision to Nick Kromka of Parsippany; Luke Homeijer was involved in another one-point decision, losing to Eddie KiLaura of Boonton, 5-4; Lane was pinned by Hani Katerji of Wayne Valley; and Floras loss was also close as he lost a 7-5 decision to Kyle Crowley of Union in their title bout. "Weis lost to a real tough opponent and hopefully, hell get another shot at himi down the road," Rizzo said. "Our upper weights are developing nicely with Flora, Lane and the Homeijer brothers with Luke at 171 and Jake in the process of getting to 189. "As a team, we have to consider our second-place finish as a great accomplishment, especially since we tied a real strong Parsippany squad." On Wednesday and Thursday of next week, the "strong" gets even stronger with Randolph and High Point providing the opposition. --- Knolls beats Pope John in dual-meet opener
DENVILLE - The Morris Knolls High School wrestling team opened its 2009-2010 dual-meet season by scoring a 57-15 victory over Pope John in a match held at Pope John in Sparta on Wednesday, Dec. 23. Jan Rosenberg, Adam Ramadan, Chris Quadrel, Michael Main, Padric Hartnett, Joe Flora and Luke and Jake Homiejer all registered pins for the Eagles. "Our wrestlers showed that their extra conditioning pays off as they were able to better finish their bouts than the Pope John wrestlers," said Knolls head coach Larry Rizzo after the match. "Quadrel was a good example ... he was behind 5-3 and he fought back to pin his opponent. He has been on the JVs the past three years and this was his first varsity win ... he really stepped it up." Steven McKowen won by decision and was named the "Wrestler of the Week" by the Knolls coaching staff. "Steve wrestled a strong match against Pope John," Rizzo explained. "And he also showed a lot in our Christmas Tournament when he beat a state qualifier from South Plainfield not only once, but twice."
Ramadan 2nd, Rosenberg and McKowen 3rd
in Morris Knolls Holiday Wrestling Tournament
DENVILLE - Larry Rizzo had two objectives at the Morris Knolls High School Holiday Wrestling Tournament that was held at Knolls on "Snowstorm Saturday" on Dec. 19. The Eagles head wrestling coach wanted to get the tournament completed before the roads got too slick from the snow that started around noon and he also wanted to see how his wrestlers handled themselves in their first competition of the 2009-2010 season. "We used four mats and we pushed," Rizzo was saying over the phone the day after the tournament. "We started at 9 a.m. and had everything finished up just before 3 p.m. ... so the rides home couldn't have been too bad for the teams that participated." As for his wrestlers, the jury is still out on that count because, although Rizzo says he was pleased with a handful of his charges, there were some "... bad matches in the early rounds that I though we should have won - but we didn't." Rizzo sees his team as "... competitive for now and improving as the season goes along" and adds he is counting on his wrestlers "... having something to say toward the end of the season." Knolls finished eighth with 80.5 points in the 10-team tournament as Adam Ramadan won a second-place medal in the 119-pound class and Jan Rosenberg (103) and Steve McKowen (125) finished third in their respective weight classes. South Plainfield - with nine champions - won the team title with 209.5 points with Wallkill Valley the runnerup with 150 points. Hackettstown (143.5) was third followed by Seton Hall Prep (108.5), Governor Livingston (104.5), Montville (104), Watchung Hills (86), Knolls, Morris Hills (40) and North Warren (36). "It was a tough field, but we needed to face some tough wrestlers because our schedule is full of good wrestling schools this season," Rizzo says. "We face High Point - the best wrestling team in the state - as well as Roxbury, Randolph, Hackettstown, Wallkill Valley, Warren Hills, Jefferson and Watchung Hills this season. "While this schedule might hurt us as far as wins and losses go, we're hoping it will be a big help to our individual wrestlers when it comes time for district and region competition." While Rizzo concedes there is a lot of work ahead for most of his wrestlers, he was happy with the way Ramadan, Rosenberg and McKowen wrestled in the tournament. Ramadan won his first two bouts before losing a 10-4 decision to Tyler Hunt of South Plainfield in the 119-pound championship bout; Rosenberg majored Tom Mele of Governor Livingston, 19-8, in the 103 consolation; and McKowen defeated Adam Szeliga, 7-4, in the consolation bout at 125. "Adam wrestled well in all three of his matches," Rizzo says. "We knew the kid from South Plainfield was very, very good and Adam handled him well at the beginning before the kid came on real strong. "Jan got paired up with the second best kid in the weight class in the first round and lost but came back real strong. He beat a good kid from Hackettstown to reach the consolation round and then had a great match there to take third. "Steve also lost early and ended up having to beat Szeliga twice to get his third-place medal. Szeliga was a state qualifier last year and beating him once was a big thing for Steve ... then to come back to hours later and beat him again was a tremendous achievement. "It was a tough day all around. We got the whole tournament in, which was good. But we're still going over our individual matches and have more work to do with the kids ... there was really no time to digest anything with the way we had to run the matches."
