MH's 6-18-2 season an improvement

that coach wants to see continue

ROCKAWAY - It's not exactly a "Wait Till Next Year!" speech, but Morris Hills High School ice hockey head coach Ed Higdon, does see hope for improvement in the future ... as in next season.
The Knights completed a 6-18-2 season with a 12-1 loss to Roxbury (16-4-1) in a Haas Cup semifinal played at Mennen Arena in Morris Township on Saturday, Feb. 20, a season that was a step up from the 1-14-1 record turned in by the 2008-09 squad.
"I have to be happy with the team’s improved record," Higdon said. "And I’m happy with the many areas in which our players improved during the season, too.
"The returning players have the ability to continue improving their play, which will hopefully offset the loss of our seniors.”
Senior Shawn Concannon led the team in scoring this past season with 13 goals and eight assists for 21 points.
Higdon sees freshman Brian McKnight - the Knights’ second leading point producer with 10 goals and three assists for 13 points - as one of the underclassmen stepping up a notch for next season.
“McKnight did very well for us,” Higdon said. “He should be able to increase his numbers next year, too. We’ll be giving all our incoming freshman a good look next year to see what they have to offer.”
As for the game against Roxbury, the Gaels scored twice in the game's first 1:18 before Morris Hills got its lone goal when Bryan Brownlee - the team’s No. 3 scorer at 4-5-9 - scored on the power play with an assist from McKnight to pull to within one with 9:48 to play in the period.
But Roxbury went ahead 3-1 with 6:22 left and then proceeded to score five more goals in the final 5:15 of the first period to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Roxbury scored four more times in the second period before the game was stopped by the mercy rule after two periods of play.
