Vazquez set for 55-meter dash

at Saturday's winter finale

ROCKAWAY - Nicole Vazquez will be off to Toms River again this weekend.
The Morris Hills senior finished fifth in the 55-meter dash at Saturday's (Feb. 20)  Group 2 meet at the Bennett Center in Toms River to qualify for the Meet of Champions.
The winter track & field season-ending MofC will be at the Bennett Bubble on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Vazquez, who had a qualifying time of 7.58 Saturday, finished with a 7.52 in the group meet final for her fifth-place finish that put her in the MofC field of 41 sprinters as a No. 26 seed.
Vazquez finished in a tie for sixth in the pole vault but was placed seventh on more misses.
The top six finishers in each event held at the six group meets (four public, two non-public) plus the next six best performances (wild cards) from all the groups make up the fields for the Meet of Champions. The girls pole vault is the only event  in both meets to which wild-card additions are not made.
Also competing for the Lady Knights at the group meet were:
Sophomore Erin Gaven, who finished seventh in the 1600-meter run; freshman Ailis Clyne, 11th in the 1600; sophomore Jackie Rettig, who finished in a five-way tie for 12th in the pole vault; junior Kira Polimeni, 13th in the 3200;  junior Jackie Mosca, 14th in the 800; junior Taylor Jozwiak, 17th in the 55-meter hurdles and also 17th in the high jump; sophomore Lexi Rewick, 19th in the 55-meter hurdles; and the team of Vazquez, Mosca, Rewick and freshman Ulana Thompson, eighth in the 4x400 relay.

Lady Knights win North 1, Group 2 sectional meet

ROCKAWAY - For the past two years, they came in second - both times by a mere six-point margin.
This year, they made it one of their two preseason team goals again, vowing to make up that six-point margin and then some.
Going in, their coach thought they had a good chance to win.
Come race day, they exceeded expectations ... they turned the unexpected into the expected ... they took the word impossible out of their vocabulary.
"They" are the members of the Morris Hills High School girls track team and what they did on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the North 1, Group 2 Winter Track & Field Championships in the Bennett Center at Toms River was simply run away with the team title.
The Lady Knights finished with 84.75 points to out-distance runnerup Mahwah, which scored 52 points. River Dell was third with 47.5 points; Ramsey was fourth with 41 points and Ridgefield Park scored 32 points to round out the top five teams.
The remaining teams in the 11-team field, in order of finish, were: Indian Hills (6th, 24 points); Fort Lee (7th, 16.25 points); Parsippany Hills (8th, 5 points); Lakeland (9th, 4 points); Parsippany (10th, 2.5 points); and Jefferson (11th, 1 point).
The Lady Knights scored points in nine of the 10 events competed and finished with three gold medals and four runnerup finishes.
"I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of the girls and what they accomplished in winning this title," said Morris Hills coach Kevin Doyle after the meet.     'We knew we had to come out strong and do some things no one expected us to do ... to make a couple impossible things possible.    '
Junior Jackie Mosca started things off with a victory in the 400-meter dash, winning the event running from the unseeded heat, making her win all the more extraordinary.
"It's hard enough to place running in the unseeded heat, let alone win the whole thing," Doyle said. "You're not racing with the better (seeded) runners and  that can affect how hard you push."
Moscas won the race in 1:02.13 with the top six finishers all under 1:02.60.
"She ran a monster race," Doyle said. "And then she went on to win the 800 and run the second leg on our 4x400 relay team for our third gold medal of the day."
Mosca won the 800 in 2:26.69 and then teamed with lead leg senior Nicole Vazquez, third-leg sophomore Lexi Rewick and anchor Ulan Thompson, a freshman, to win the 4x400 in 4:17.12.
Sophomore Erin Gaven and freshman Ailis Clyne finished 2-4 in the 1600-meter run with Gaven turning in a time of 5:25.25 and Clyne finishing in 5:29.66.
Junior Taylor Jozwiak and Rewick were 2-3 in the 55-meter hurdles with Jozwiak turning in a time of 9.51 and Rewick finishing in 9.59.
Vazquez was second in the 55-meter dash in 7.52 - a mere .01 off the winning pace set by junior Kim Nagotko of Mahwah, who won the race with a time of 7.51.
Junior Kira Polimeni won the fourth silver medal for the Lady Knight when she finished second in the 3200 with a time of 11:59.16.
Vazquez picked up her third medal of the meet when she cleared nine-feet-even to finished third in the pole vault.
In other scoring events for the Lady Knights, Jozwiak cleared 4-8 to finish fourth in the high jump; sophomore Jackie Rettig cleared 8-0 to finish tied for fifth in the pole vault; Gaven cleared 4-4 to finish in a four-way tie for sixth in the high jump and she also earned a team point with her sixth-place finish in the 800, where she was timed in 2:31.33.
In other races, senor Kerry Rogers finished 15th in the 400; Rewick was eighth in the 55-meter dash; Clyne was seventh in the 800 and 3200; and junior Lauren Aspiazu was ninth in the shot (with a personal best 30-10.75) with sophomore Rachel Hayes 12th in the same event.
"The sectional meet was one of our goals, as was getting our 4x800 relay team to qualify for the Penn Relays in the spring," Doyle said. "We also added the division title in the conference (Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference, Freedom Division) meet, which was a little unexpected because we didnt know that much about a lot of the teams in the meet since this was the first year for the conference."
Doyle was actually a little low on his pre-meet expectation for the amount of points he thought the Lady Knights would score.
"We got more points than we expected from Lexi and Taylor in the hurdles ... Kira broke the 12-minute barrier to get her second in the 3200 ... Taylor and Erin gave us more points than we expected in the high jump. In all, we were 18 points higher than the total we had doped out before the meet."
And then there was Clyne's efforts in the 800, 1600 and 3200, a triple Doyle called " .. almost impossible to pull off -- and here she finished with a fourth and two seventh-place finishes. As a freshman!"
"It was a great evening and it made my career when our senior captains - Kerry Rogers and Nicole Vazquez - brought the championship trophy to the rest of team after the presentation ceremony.
"And then the icing on the cake was when boys coach Sean Robinson and his team congratulated us and gave the girls a hue round of applause - right there in the middle of the bubble for all to see.
"It was a great day for the entire program ... and a great day for the team concept that was impressed upon me eight years ago when John Struck and Sean asked me to coach track and field for the first time."

Lady Knights qualify for 4x800 at Penn Relays

ROCKAWAY - This time, the postponement worked out in favor of the Morris Hills High School girls 4x800 relay team.
And because Jackie Mosca, Ailis Clyne, Erin Gaven and Kira Polimeni ran a 9:47 - thats 14 seconds better than the school record - at the Varsity Classic at the NYC Armory on Monday, Feb. 8, the Lady Knights have qualified for the prestigious Penn Relays at the University of Penn this coming spring.
How they got to the Varsity Classic is almost as compelling a story as what they did after they got there.
The original plan was for Morris Hills girls team to compete in the sectionals at the Bennet Center in Toms River on Saturday, Feb 6, and then go to the Armory on Monday, Feb. 8 to give the 4x800 team a chance to qualify for Penn.
Because of the storm that shut down South Jersey over the weekend, the Saturday sectionals were postponed to Tuesday, Feb. 9, meaning the Lady Knights would have to skip the Varsity Classic in order to get in a good practice session for the sectionals.
"The sectionals have been the priority in the training models all season," says Morris Hills girls winter track coach Kevin Doyle. "The 4x800 is something we realized we could do early on, but the sectionals are first for us, the 4x800 second."
Then, early Monday, Feb. 8, Doyle & Co. got word that the sectionals had been postponed yet again - this time to Saturday, Feb. 13 - by a predicted snow storm.
Doyle started to make arrangements to go to the Varsity Classic as soon as he got the word of the postponement.
"We got the OK from AD Rob Haraka to send the 4x800 team to the meet," Doyle says. "We had cancelled our bus when we decided to practice for the sectionals, but Coach Sean Robinson and the boys team were more than happy to give the girls a ride.
"Then the girls had to call home to alert their parents and have their meet gear brought to them at school by 2 p.m., when the bus was leaving. It was quite a scramble to get all this done and it didnt leave the girls much time to get mentally prepared for the meet and to think about the importance of what they were going to do."
Everything got put together and the 4x800 team and assistant coach Keith Lindsley set off for New York City, leaving Doyle and the rest of the girls team back at the school to work out for the twice-moved state sectionals.
When it came time to run, Mosca opened with a 2:26, Clyne  followed with a 2:26; Gaven ran a 2:25 and Polimeni ran a 2:28 anchor leg.
"It was unbelievable," Doyle was saying after the teams returned to the school later that evening. "The girls took 14 seconds off their previous best ... its unbelievable.
    "We are going to Penn!"
On Wednesday, Feb. 3, the Lady Knights' 4x800 team of Ulana Thompson, Gaven, Mosca and Polimeni ran a 10:01.9 at the Metropolitan Invitational, also held at the New York City Armory.
The reason for the big drop in time?
"We have been training hard for the sectionals ... so that had to help," Doyle explains. "It also helped that all four girls ran an 800 on the Armory track last week (Ailis ran the 800 sprint at the Metropolitan) and they were able to work out some of the quirks of running on a banked track ... they were able to capitalize on some of the slight mistakes they made last week."
And where did the 4x800 team finish in the competition at the Varsity Classic?
"You know, we dont even know," Doyle says. "In the excitement of everything, nobody bothered to find out where the team placed ... I guess well have to call and find out in the morning."

The next day, the Lady Knights found out they finished 10th overall in the race.

"It also looks as if they will have a top ten time in the state," Doyle adds. "And their performance last night will earn them a U.S. Second Team Elite status."

Not a bad day at all ... for a scramble.

Lady Knights win division title at NJAC's first title meet

ROCKAWAY - Try as she might, Morris Hills senior Nicole Vazquez was stuck on 8-feet, 6-inches in the girls pole vault competition at the first Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference Freedom Division Winter Track Championships held at Drew University in Madison on Saturday, Jan. 9.
    Eight-feet, six-inches ... eight-feet, six-inches.
Vazquez had broken her own school record at 8-7 by clearing nine-feet at the Morris County Relays just five days earlier to combine with sophomore Lexi Rewick to finish first in the event and Vazquez expected to do as well or better in the conference meet.
Try as she might, however, she couldnt better 8-6 and finished second, losing out on misses to Butler senior Monica Loranger, who also cleared 8-6.
"Nicole had already had a standout day by winning the 55-meter dash and coming in third in 300,: said Morris Hills girls track coach Kevin Doyle after the meet. "But she was still disappointed that she had not done better in the pole vault ... that's the competitor she is."
But Vasquez' disappointment turned quickly to happiness when Doyle told her that Lady Knights' pole vaulters had clinched the conference championship for Morris Hills.
Sophomore Lexi Rewick cleared 8-0 to finish fourth and sophomore Jackie Rettig cleared 7-6 to finish tied for fifth and the 13.5 points the girls had earned had put the Lady Knight over the top in points needed for the division title.
Morris Hills finished with 79.5 points to beat Kinnelon and Butler, which tied for second as each team scored 48 points. Hanover Park finished fourth with 39 points followed by Chatham in fifth with 34 points to round out the top five.
    Villa Walsh (6th, 28 points), Whippany Park (7th, 25.5), Madison (8th, 20), Parsippany (9th, 10), Jefferson (10th, 7) and Dover (11th, 2) rounded out the 11-team field.
Earlier, Vasquez won the 55-meter dash in 7.62 and placed third in the 300-meter dash in 44.30 to account for 24 team points for the Lady Knights.
Junior Jackie Mosca won the 600-meter run in 1:42.57 and placed third in the 1000-meter run in 3:17.67 to add 16 points to the team total of the Knights. She also ran the lead leg of the 4x400-meter relay that just missed out on a medal with a seventh-place finish.
"Nicole and Jackie each had standout days," Doyle said. "By the end of the meet, they were both exhausted ... they had nothing left in the tank."
There were other outstanding performances by the Lady Knights, of course, as the teams point total exceeded Doyles pre-meet expectation.
"We figured going into the meet we had a good shot at winning, but we didnt want to share that with the girls because we didnt want to put on any extra pressure," Doyle explains. "As it turned out, we scored 15 more points than we anticipated ... it was nice going into the final events knowing we had the title wrapped up.
"Freshman Ulana Thompsons second-place (1:44.83) in the 600 behind Jackie was huge. We were hoping that she would place fourth, but when she got close to the finish line she really went for it and finished second to give us four more points than we expected.
"It was at this point in the meet that the coaches felt that everything was going to work out for us."
Other point-producers for the Lady Knights included:
Sophomore Erin Gaven, who finished third in the 1600 with a time of 5:31.03.
Freshman Alilis Clyne, who finished fifth in the 1600 in 5:36.30 and also placed fourth in the 1000 with a time of 3:18.80.
Junior Taylor Jozwiak, who finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.52 and then came back to clear 4-8 in the high jump and place fourth on fewer misses.
Junior Kira Polimeni, who ran a 12:08.47 to finish fourth in the 3200.
Rewick, who ran a 9.79 to finish sixth in the 55-meter hurdles to add to her fourth-place finish in the pole vault.
And junior Michelle Churchman, who was sixth in the 1000 with a time of 3:22.74.
Competing but not scoring for the Lady Knights were junior Jana Sedlacek, 11th in the 1600 in 5:54.15; Rettig, 14th in the 55-meter dash in 8.27; sophomore Jaimie Bertoli, 21st in the 55-meter dash in 8.57; senior Kerry Rogers, ninth in the 600 in 1:50.77; Rewick, 12th in the 300 in 46.77; Thompson, 13th in the 300 in 46.93; Mosca, Churchman, Thompson and Rogers, 7th in the 4x400 relay; and junior Lauren Aspiazu, tied for seventh in the shot with a throw of 28-8.5.
"This is a young team with only two seniors," Doyle said. "But they go hard all the time in practice and hard work doesnt bother them at all. They have a nice future.
"But right now, its good to see they so happy with their championship ... they certainly earned it."

The Lady Knights knocked two seconds off their previous best 4x800 time as they work toward qualifying for the Penn Relays in the spring.
