Rebuilding? Reloading? Not at Morris Hills ...
|
|
ROCKAWAY - You don't hear the words "rebuilding" or "reloading" when it comes to the boys cross country team at Morris Hills High School. True, all the key runners have graduated from last year's 9-0 team, the team that won county, conference and section titles and finished third in the group meet and was fifth in the Meet of Champions. There is no Sean Pohorence or Liam Tansey on this 2009 team. No Lucas Clyne, Vinny Chiusano, Tyler Hendrickson or Joe Barraro, either. So why no talk of rebuilding? Or reloading? "We have a tradition here at Morris Hills - each team is its own team and each season is its own season," says Sean Robinson, the head coach of the Knights. "To us, it's another 'Cross County Season" ... it's another season, a new season. "We lost an incredible crew to graduation ... but we're still very excited about this year and next. We have a dynamite group of sophomores and these kids put in a great summer - a heck of a summer. "A lot of our young kids have really matured over a short period of time. Most of them were around last year's team and the hard work, dedication and attitude of the 2008 team has rubbed off on them. "These kids won't be in the class of last year's team but I have to say they are going to enjoy the process of getting really, really good." Of Robinson's top 15 runners this fall, two are seniors, six are juniors, six are sophomores and there is one freshman. The seniors are Leo Valdebenito and Mark DiGennaro with Valdebenito showing in the top five in time trials and DiGennaro a sprinter on the spring track team who is " ... working on his endurance," according to Robinson. Juniors John Richmond and Eric Freebour are the team's co-captains and Robinson says junior Connor Doyle will be running with the front pack after putting in " ... a break-through summer." Mitch White is another junior who improved over the summer and Joe Rewick and Ian Zieder round out Robinson's group of talented juniors. The sophomores who have struck Robinson's fancy are Alex Fairmond, Nick Paterson, Hemal Shaw, Dustin Wahba, Patrick Dunn and Connor Whelan. "These kids have done their work over the summer and matured physically to the point they can now handle our intense workouts," Robinson explains. "Last year, they could not. "Fairmond didn't even run cross country last year but he and Patterson and Shaw have been running well this fall. Wahba and Dunn have also improved from last year and Whelan is one of our strong jayvee runners who has a legitimate chance of moving up to varsity. "We have 40 kids out for the team this fall and that's a massive cross country team by Morris Hills standards. It's certainly the biggest team I've ever had here." Robinson sees the runners' positions changing from meet to meet with several of his junior varsity runners "... popping up to the varsity at any given meet. "These kids are very close in talent, which is good from a coaching standpoint and also good for the kids, because our JV kids will be keeping the varsity runners on their toes. "We'r'e looking forward to an exiting season ... we have a lot of question marks right now, but we also feel we have the runners who will supply us with the answers and we're anxious to get started." NOTES: Pete Whitner is assisting Robinson as well as assisting girls head coach Lauren Jackson .... Whitner has been a head varsity cross country coach on the high school level before and Robinson welcomes his savvy and his experience ... "He's old-school and I'm new-school," Robinson says. "So we feel the kids are getting the best of both worlds."
