Six Morris Hills winter teams

honored for sportsmanship

-

ROCKAWAY - Six Morris Hills High School winter varsity athletic teams have been awarded North Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) National Division Sportsmanship Awards for the 2009-2010 season, according to an announcement made by Robert Haraka, the Knights' athletics director.
The awards are given to teams "... that demonstrate outstanding conduct before, during and after sporting events" and the winners are determined by a vote of all National Division coaches.
The Knights teams honored are: Bowling, coached by Guy Magnifico; girls basketball, coached by Bill Nieman; wrestling, coached by Joe Barchetto; girls swimming, coached by Heather McDonald; boys fencing, coached by Barbara Lynch; and girls fencing, coached by Lauren McCarthy.
"Sportsmanship is one of he most powerful lessons learned through participation in interscholastic athletics," said Haraka. "It gives me great pleasure to see that other coaches recognize this in our student-athletes and coaches.
"And I also want to thank our people for representing our school district - in victory and defeat - with great pride and dignity."

'Coaches vs. Cancer'

 at MH-MK girls hoops

    -

ROCKAWAY - It was "Coaches vs. Cancer" at the Morris Hills-Morris Knolls girls basketball games at Morris Hills High School on Thursday, Jan. 28, as the girls basketball programs of both schools helped raise funds to help battle cancer. Players on all three levels of both schools sold pink T-shirts and basktballs and manned donation cans at various locations in the gymnasium area.
"A lot of the teams in the county tournament will be doing this in their gyms when the games start this Saturday," said Morris Hills head coach Bill Nieman. "We didn't think we would get a home game in the tourney, so we got together with Knolls and decided to do it tonight."
Money collected at the Hills-Knolls game as well as the county games will be presented to various cancer charities on Friday, Feb. 26, when the Morris County Girls Basketball Tournament championship game will be played at FDU-Florham University.

Before the varsity game, the teams posed for a combined team shot with their coaches, Sandy Feld of Morris Knolls (frontt row) and Nieman (second row) ... and then they went out a played the game and Morris Knolls won, 45-39, but Morris Hills was never out of contention.

Rob Grow, who co-owns Potbelly's with Melinda Milovic, led a community-effort to help clean up the Rockaway River in town this past spring. He also ran a fishing contest where he and other merchants in the town purchased 30 rainbow trout in the 4-to-5 pound range to put in the river. Both events have been scheduled again for the spring of 2010.

CLEANING UP!

---

Potbelly's will hold its second annual Rockaway River Spring Cleanup on Saturday, April 3, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The cleanup crews will work from the falls behind the borough's fire house and move downstream as far as time permits. Rob Grow, the co-owner of Potbelly’s and coordinator of the cleanup, is looking for youth groups to clean up the shorelines, kayakers or canoeists to help locate refuse in the river, and hardy souls with waders to do the dirty work and haul the trash out of the muck.
Interested parties are asked to call Grow at 201-602-6835 and let him know you’re willing to help and how many people you’ll be bringing with you.
