MK5K Race / Walk

Race Day: The focus was on everybody who was anybody at the Morris Knolls Diamond Club's MK5K Race/Walk held in Denville on Saturday, April 10 -- the runners, the walkers, the volunteers, the teachers, the students. All in all, they all made it quite a day, too ... a picture-perfect day, if you will.

Joy Brnic of Towaco (No. 170 in center of photo) and the rest of the MK5K field await the starter's gun for the sixth annual race held in Denville on Saturday, April 10, 2010. Brnic, the woman's champion in 2009, finished 16th overall and was third woman, behind Maria Danna of Morris Plains (third overall) and Mary Christian of Flanders (14th overall).

Bobby Arnesen (left to right), Jimmy Arnesen, Mike Taormina and Matt Goleniecki finish. Bobby, who played and coached baseball at Knolls, was diagnosed with leukemia last year and some of the proceeds of the 2009 race went to help pay for treatments. On Race Day this year, he announced his leukemia is in remission and he competed in the race.

Race director Rich Luttenbeger and Knolls 2002 grad

Maggie King, the guest starter for the race, await

the runners at the finish line. You may recognize King

from TV where she was a contestent on the reality

show "The Biggest Loser."

Members of Family DiPalma made their annual appearance

at the race as Juli DiPalma Rush (left), MK Class of '90 who now lives in Delran; her nephew Anthony, a student at Knolls and a Rockaway Township resident; and her father Peter,

who now lives in Hackettstown, strike a happy pose.

Dan Simone of Succasunna (left) gets a high five from his brother Mike of Denville, who beat him to the finish line.

Elizabeth Fisher, a Denville resident and social studies teacher at Knolls, becomes the first runner to participate

as a MK student (2005) and as a teacher.

Morris Knolls junior Bobby Cangelosi, 17, finishes in 18:47.66, 13th overall and first in the MK student category.

Race director Rich Luttenberger's wife Kristen wheels

their son Derek, 3, toward the finish line.

Michael Luttenberger, son of the race director,

finishes his first MK5K in 30:03, proving he did

not inherit his father's lack of speed.

George Ellenberg (left) and Nick DeRosa, Knolls grads and former baseball players who worked the race as volunteers when they were in school, happily sprint to the finish line as they try to outrun each other in their first MK5K.

(DeRosa beat his friend to the line by 1.5 seconds)

Rockaway resident and veteran MK5K participant Arch Seamans, 78 years young and still running strong, accepts

his age-group medal from Bobby Arnesen.

Knolls social studies teacher Aaron Lipsen (above) was the first faculty member to finish the race. Denville resident Sue Cygon is all smiles as she finishes. Cygon owns Power Play Gaming in Denville and donated many of the prizes awarded to winners of the youth and MK students age-group categories.
