Knolls advances in state tourney DENVILLE - Jenna Channell scored two goals and Mallory
Vanderyajt had a goal and two assists as the Morris Knolls High School
field hockey team, seeded No. 7 in the 10-team North 1, Group 4 state
sectionals, defeated No. 10-seeded Hackensack, 5-0, on Hackensack's turf field as the
tourney opened preliminary-round play Tuesday, Oct. 27. The win
puts the Lady Eagles (8-7-1) into a first-round game against No. 2 seed
Roxbury at Roxbury, a game that must be played on or before Thursday, Nov. 5. Morris Knolls had a 6-7-1 record at the time of the state's cutoff date of Wednesday, Oct. 21, when all teams with .500 or better records qualified automatically for the sectional tournament. A provision in the field hockey tournment rules provides for teams with sub-.500 records to apply to be admitted to the tournament and that's what Knolls coach Amy Ottavinia did, citing the fact her team was "... playing better at the time" and the record was only one game off the .500 cutoff mark. "We found out Monday, the day before tournament started," Ottavinia said after Tuesday night's game, a game that was moved to Hackensack because Knolls' field was unplayable. "The girls were very excited. "And we're excited about meeting Roxbury again, too. We played them to a tie the first time around."
As for Tuesday's game, Channell scored the first two goals for Knolls with Breana
Penzenik and Vanderyajt getting the assists. Nikki Halm followed with

Knolls' a 4-0 lead and then Vanderyajt scored the game's final goal on
an assist from Sasha Brown. Sabrina Goldtrap started in goal
for Knolls and Brianne Dostenko finished up but the Lady Eagle duo did
not have to make a single save during the game. "Michelle Zollo continues to be solid in the defensive end in keeping the ball out of our goalcage," Ottavina said. "It was a good defensive effort by the entire unit. "Sabrina has been stellar in goal all season and, although she wasn't tested against Hackensack, her communication skills were, as usual, key in the win as she is constantly telling the defense to mark and where to look for the open girls. "Taylor Deemer is a great defender who has made some goal-line saves for us and Marth Lavery has very quick feet and is able to chase down anybody." Knolls fired 25 shots
on the Hackensack goal.Knolls stops Montville, 3-1 DENVILLE - Sasha Brown, Taylor Deemer and Shannon Fisher made "Senior Day" for he Morris Knolls High School field hockey program a bit more special as they scored goals to lead the Lady Eagles to a 3-1 victory over Montville in a game played at Knolls on Thursday, Oct. 22.
