DISTRICT 3 TOURNAMENT
Denville goes two-and-out in post-season play
-
DENVILLE - The 2011 District 3 American Legion Senior Baseball Baseball Tournament was not kind to Denville this week as the team from Post 390 lost the first two games it played in the eight-team double-elimination competition. Denville opened the tournament with a 13-8 loss to West Windsor-Plainsboro on Tuesday, July 19, and then lost a 9-5 decision to Clinton on Thursday, July 21. All District 3 games are at Moody Park in Ewing Township. Brooklawn won the title with a 16-3 victory over North Trenton on Saturday, June 23, and the tourney runnerup will be determined Sunday, July 24, with Washington Township, West Windsor Plainsboro and North Trenton still in the running. Both the district champ and runnerup advance to the eight-team state tournament 2011 PLAYOFF SEASON Denville, limited to 3 hits, loses title game to Sussex -
DENVILLE - Denville was held to three hits in the Morris-Sussex American Legion Senior Baseball League post-season championship game and suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Sussex at High Point High School on Friday, July 15, 2011. Sussex broke a scoreless tie with three third-inning runs, scored a single run in the fourth and closed out the scoring for the game with two runs in the fifth inning. Jackson Baird and James Aliotta were each 1-for-3 and Mike Reggianni finished 1-for-2 with all three hits singles for Denville. Andrew Manmnello (4-2) took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking two. Denville (15-6) and Sussex (16-5) finished the regular season tied for third with 12-5 records before each team won three games in the post-season to reach the championship game. Denville's next game will be a 7 p.m. District 3 Tournament game on Tuesday, July 19, at Moody Park in Ewing against a Mercer County team to be named. --- It's Denville vs. Sussex in playoff game on Friday DENVILLE - Denville will face Sussex in the 5:30 p.m. championship game of the Morris-Sussex American Legion Senior Baseball League's post-season playoffs at High Point High School on Friday, July 15, 2011. Sussex defeated Parsippany, 5-4, in a playoff semifinal on Wednesday, July 13, to reach the title game, a day after Denville gained its berth in the championship game with a 7-4 victory over previously unbeaten and regular-season champ Pequannock (16-1-1). Parsippany's loss also clinched a berth in the American Legion State Tournament for Denville. The top five teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the state tournament unless the playoff champion is a team that finished out of the top five. Pequannock (16-0-1), Mount Morris (13-3-1), Sussex (12-5), Morristown (12-5) and Denville (12-5) were the top five teams (in order) at the end of the regular season with Parsippany (8-8) finishing in ninth place. If Parsippany beat Sussex on Wednesday and then beat Denville on Friday, Parsippany would have qualified and Denville would have been bumped out of the top five and failed to qualify. --- Pequannock handed 1st loss as Denville gains finale DENVILLE - After playing three games in four days, the Denville team will focus on another game for one evening - Sussex vs. Parsippany on Wednesday, July 13, 2011. The winner of that game will face Denville for the Morris-Sussex American Legion Senior Baseball League playoff championship. The title game is scheduled to be played on Friday, July 15, at 5:30 p.m. with the field to be determined by the outcome of Sussex-Parsippany. A Sussex victory would make the title game a home game for Sussex; a Parsippany victory would put the title game in Denville. Denville reached the county post-season playoff title game by doing something no other team has done this season - beat regular-season champion Pequannock, which brought a 16-0-1 record into their playoff semifinal at Pequannock on Tuesday, July 12. Denville (15-5) scored five big runs in the top of the fourth inning and Jackson Baird got big outs when he needed them in a 7-4 victory over Pequannock. Baird (5-1) gave up 12 hits, struck out two and walked only one, and never got hurt by a big inning as Denville played near-flawless (one error) defense behind him to hand Pequannock its first loss of the season. Pequannock touched Baird for a first-inning run, but Denville got that back in the top of the third inning when Steve Rosen doubled and scored on a single by Baird. Denville's big fourth inning started when Bobby Hanson reached on an error, took second when Sal Parinnello was safe on a fielder's choice, and scored on a single by Pat Golden. Mike Reggianni reached on an error that allowed the second run to score; Vinnie Oliveri reached on an error as the third run of the inning crossed the plate; Rosen singled in the fourth run and, after Baird singled, James Aliotta came through with an RBI single that gave Denville a 6-1 lead. Pequannock scored twice in the bottom of the fourth and added a single run in the fifth to pull to within two runs at 6-4, but Denville added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Oliveri singled, took second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on Baird's third single of the game. Baird finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs to highlight Denville's 13-hit attack. Parrinnello (4-1), the first of three Denville pitchers, got the win by working the first four innings, allowing both Milton runs in the top of the fourth before finishing with four strikeouts and three walks. Mike Reggianni relieved and pitched a scoreless fifth inning before Aliotta finished up with two more scoreless innings. Vinnie Oliveri started the Denville first-inning rally with a double and, after Jackson Baird walked, Aliotta knocked in the first two runs of the game with another double. Bobby Hanson was hit with a pitch putting runners on first and second and Parinnelo brought them both in with his double, taking third on the throw from where he scored the inning's fifth run on an error. Denville scored a single run in the second inning when Oliveri and Barid walked and Aliotta singled to load the bases and Stevo Rosen followed with a sacrifice fly. After Milton scored its only two runs in the top of the fourth, Denville got on back in its half of the inning when Oliveri reached on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Denville was held to six hits with Aliotta finishing 2-for-3 with his two-run double and a run scored; Parrinnello going 2-for-2 with his two-run double and a run scored; Oliveri going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and three runs scored; and Mike Reggianni finishing 1-for-2. --- Golden 4-hits Lincoln Park in Morris-Sussex playoff opener DENVILLE - Unbeaten Pat Golden pitched a four-hitter and Jackson Baird had two of Denville's five hits when Denville beat Lincoln Park in a first-round game in the Morris-Sussex American Legion Senior Baseball League post-season playoffs at Veterans Memorial Field off Zeek Road here on Saturday, July 9, 2011. Lincoln Park got its only run of the game in the top of the first inning but Denville came right back to take the lead for good by scoring twice in its half of the inning. Stevo Rosen got the at-bat started when he drew a walk and, after stealing second, scored on a single by Baird. Baird took second on the throw home and scored when Jake Moran followed with a single. Denville scored the game's only other run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Bobby Hanson doubled and Mike Reggianni followed with an RBI single. Baird finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored; Hanson was 1-for-2 with a double; Moran was 1-for-3 with an RBI; and Reggianni was 1-for-2 with an RBI. --- Baird, Parinnello lead way in win over Mount Olive DENVILLE - Jackson Baird pitched a complete-game four-hitter using only 72 pitches over seven innings and Sal Parinnelo drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double to spark Denville to a 5-2 victory over Mount Olive in a Morris-Sussex American Legion Senior Baseball League game at Mount Olive on Wednesday, July 6, 2011. Mount Olive scored single runs in first and seventh innings as Baird struck out one and walked one to improve his season record to 3-1. Denville made the most of its six hits, opening the scoring with a single run in the top of the second when Mike Reggianni singled, stole second and scored on a two-base throwing error. Denville scored four times in the top of the third, loading the bases with one out on a single by Bobby Hanson and walks to Vinnie Oliveri and Dave Ferraro. Parinnello followed with his bases-clearing double to right-center and, after moving to third on a wild pitch, came home with the fourth run of the inning on Pat Golden's sacrifice fly to right. The victory gives Denville a final-season record of 12-5, tied for third with Sussex and Morristown behind regular-season champ Pequannock (16-0-1) and runnerup Mount Morris (13-3). Denville faces Lincoln Park in a 4 p.m. first-round playoff game on Saturday, July 9, at Veterans Memorial Field off Zeek Road here in the township. --- Mannello, Baird pitch Denville to 3-1 victory DENVILLE - Andrew Mannello and Jackson Baird combined on a four-hitter and Denville made the most of its four hits in a 3-1 victory over Parsippany in a Morris-Sussex American Legion Senior Baseball League game played at Veterans Memorial Stadium off Zeek Road here on Wednesday, June 29, 2011. Mannello (3-1) pitched the first five innings to get the win, allowing one run on three hits and two walks before Baird finished with two scoreless innings where gave up Parsippany's fourth hit. Denville (11-5) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third with two unearned runs as Vinnie Oliveri singled, Bobby Hanson reached on an error and, after both runners moved up on a passed ball, Sal Parrinnello reached on another Parsippany error that allowed both Oliveri and Hanson to score.
