STATE TOURNAMENT
Piscataway's 5-run 7th inning ousts Denville from states, 5-1 -
DENVILLE - A five-run outburst in the top of the seventh and final inning that featured seven straight hits ousted Denville from the 2011 American Legion Junior Baseball Final 8 State Tournament as Piscataway rallied for a 5-3 victory at Teener Field in Union on Sunday, July 31. The loss was the second in as many days in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament for two-time defending champion Denville, which finished its season with a 25-5 overall record. Denville broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring two runs. Jame Aliotta reached on an error, stole second and took third when Christian Shuey followed with a single to right field. With runners on first and third, Aliotta scored on the front end of a double steal and, after Ryan Tiefenbacher's one-out single moved Shuey to third, Shuey scored when Dan Bubak put down a successful suicide squeeze bunt. With Denville starter John-Lucas Duffy pitching shutout ball and allowing but four hits through the first six innings, Denville took that 2-0 lead into the seventh inning when Piscataway's bats suddenly came alive. A one-out walk started the rally and a double put runners on second and third. A single by the No. 9 batter tied the game at 2-2 and another single by the leadoff batter put runners on first and second. Piscataway took the lead at 3-2 when the next batter singled but Denville got the second out of the inning on the play when the runner on first was thrown out trying to reach third base. The No. 3 batter followed with an RBI double for Piscataway's fifth straight hit and a 4-2 lead. Alex Bubak replaced Duffy at this point but was greeted with an RBI single for a 5-2 lead and another single - Piscataway's seventh straight hit - before Bubak recorded the final out of the inning on a fly ball to center. Denville scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Stevo Rosen hit a two-out double down the right field line and Sean Green followed with an RBI single before Piscataway got the final out of the inning and the game. Tiefenbacher finished 3-for-3 to lead Denville's nine-hit attack. Rosen was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Green finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Shuey was 1-for-3 with a run scored; Andrew Chegwidden was 1-for-2; Dan Bubak finished with an RBI on his suicide squeeze; and Aliotta had a walk and scored a run in three at-bats. --- Denville held to five hits in 5-1 loss to Haddon Heights DENVILLE - Held to five hits by Haddon Heights hurler Brendan Anderson, Denville saw its 14-game post-season winning streak come to an end with a 5-1 loss in an opening-round game of the American Legion Junior Baseball Final 8 State Championships at Teener Field in Union on Saturday, July 30, 2011. The loss knocked two-time defending state champ Denville into the losers bracket of the eight-team, double-elimination competition where Post 390 will face Piscataway in a 10 a.m. second-round game at Teener Field on Sunday. Piscataway lost to Mount Holly in another first-round game Saturday. Denville will now have to win five games in the next six days in order to win its third straight state championship. John-Lucas Duffy has been named to start Sunday's must-win game against Piscataway. Haddon Heights did all of its scoring in two innings - pushing across two runs in the top of the second inning on a single and a home run and added three more in the top of the sixth on three singles, a walk and two Denville errors. But the real story behind Denville's loss was Anderson, who struck out four and walked one and kept Denville hitters off-stride the entire game with his location - which had Denville hitters behind in the count most of the game - and his changing speeds on his pitches - which resulted in a lot of groundball outs. Denville spoiled Anderson's shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh and final inning when Sean Green - who had two of Denville's five hits - opened the inning with a double to left-center, took third when Ryan Tiefenbacher singled to right, and scored when Dan Bubak hit into a double play. James Aliotta started for Denville and pitched five-plus innings allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits, two walks, on hit batsman while striking out one. Christian Shuey worked the sixth and gave up a hit and a walk and struck out one and Alex Bubak allowed but one runner on a walk when he came on to pitch the seventh inning. Nick Hussey and Andrew Chegwidden had Denville's other two hits; Steveo Rosen reached on a walk and Dan Bubak was hit with a pitch.
