Wil Guida: State novice champ at 55.

Guida captures state title
at novice championships

-

ROCKAWAY TWP.  - When 10-year-old Wil Guida's wrestling season started last June, he figured he'd be kept busy with in a lot of matches and a lot of tournaments - not to mention practice sessions.
When the fourth-grader at the township's Dwyer School walked off the mat at Union High School on Saturday, March 19, the 55-pounder not only had competed for the 85th time this season, he also had a state championship under his belt.
Guida, wrestling with the Scorpions Wrestling Club of Fairfield, won the state title in the 55-pound division at  the New Jersey Wrestling Novice Championships held at Union High School in Union. Guida was 4-0 in the tournament, pinning his first foe before winning his next three bouts by 6-1, 12-0 and 7-5 decisions with his closest call coming in the championship match.
He is 75-10 overall for the season -- 60-3 with his very active Scorpions club team; 9-5 with the Morris Knolls Junior Eagles; and 6-2 in a handful of other tournaments he entered either on his own or with some of his Junior Eagles or Scorpion teammates.

He also practiced with the Junior Eagles and Scorpions - four times a week with the Scorpions at times.
Guida, who has been wrestling with the Junior Eagles and then the Scorpions since he was 7 years old, placed fourth in the 50-pound weight class in last year's NJW state championships after going unbeaten (17-0) with the Junior Eagles at the same weight class during the regular season.
This season, he won the Junior Eagles wrestleoffs at 55 but most of his matches came in the 60-pound weight class. He also wrestled at 60 in the post-season Tri-County Youth Wrestling League Tournament and placed sixth, with the Junior Eagles finishing fourth in the team standings.
At the end of the season, Guida was given the "Heart of the Eagle" award by the Junior Eagles coaches for his willingness to put aside individual glory for the team, as evidenced in his wrestling up a weight class for most of the season.
"Wil's the type of kid who goes out and does his job and would rather work for the team than be concerned with his own record," said Bill Guida, Wil's father and an assistant coach on the Junior Eagles. "He always has a hug and encouraging words for his opponents, win or lose ... this seems rare for his age, but that's just the kind of a kid he is.
"We've had a lot of people from other teams and other areas of the
state tell us they see this in the way Wil competes ... and as a parent and coach, it's something you like to hear."

...  as much as Wil Guida likes to wrestle.
