O'Connor, Healy 4-hitter
gives Rockaway 8-0 win

ROCKAWAY - Steve O'Connor and Bryan Healy combined on a four-hit shutout as Rockaway defeated Morris Catholic, 8-0, in an Iron Area Senior Babe Ruth Baseball League game played at Oak Meadow field in Rockaway Township on Tuesday, June 29.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Rockaway, which improved to 3-7-1. O'Connor started an went three innings, allowing two hits while striking out two and walking none. Healy, who got the win, finished up with four innings of work and also allowed but two hits. He struck out one and also did not walk a man. Rockaway got the only run it would really need in the first inning when Tyler Gribbons reached on an error, stole second and scored on a single by Healy. The score became 2-0 in the top of the fifth when Gribbons singled, stole second and third and scored when Healy bounced out, second to first. Rockaway broke up a close game by scoring three runs in each of the last two innings. In the sixth, Kyle Corry singled, stole second and scored on a single by Nick Delucia. Robert Shilanick follows with a double to drive in DeLucia and, after Shilanick moved to third when Steve O'Connor grounded out, Nick Gelinas follows with another groundout to drive in Shilanick. In the seventh inning, a single by Mark Kepler and walks to Healy and Brendan McCormick loaded the bases. Corry singled in Kepler for one run, DeLucia works a walk to force in Healy with the second run; and Shilanick singled in McCormick with the third and final run of the inning. Rockaway's 13-hit attack was led by Shilanick, who went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Gribbons, Corry and Steve O'Conner each finished with two hits with Gribbons going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four stolen bases; Corry going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored; and O'Conner also getting two hits in four at-bats. Healy was 1-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored; DeLucia was 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and a run scored; Kepler was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored; Tyler Moran was 1-for-4; McCormick walked and scored a run in three at-bats; and Gelinas has an RBI in four trips. Rockaway is back in action on Thursday, July 1, with a 7 p.m. home game at Donatoni Park.

Rockaway falls to Denville-1 for third straight loss
ROCKAWAY - Rockaway suffered its third straight loss in bowing to Denville-1, 8-2, in an Iron Area Senior Babe Ruth Baseball League game played at Gardner Field in Denville on Thursday, June 24. Steve O'Connor pitched the first three innings for Rockaway (2-7-1) and Kyle Corry finished up by throwing the last three innings of the game. Denville-1 had an 8-0 lead - thanks to a six-run outburst in the fourth inning - before Rockaway was able to put up any runs on the board in the fifth inning. Tyler Gribbons got Rockaway's rally started with a single, Mark Kepler was hit by a pitch and both runners moves up a base on a wild pitch. Tyler Moran followed with a single to drive in Gribbons and Kepler came in to score on a Nick DeLucia groundout. Rockaway got four other hits - a double by Kyle Corry and singles by Shaun Meador, Steve O'Connor and Kepler. Rockaway has the weekend off and returns to action on Tuesday, June 29, with a 6 p.m. game against Morris Catholic at Morris Catholic High School. Rockaway returns home to Donatoni Park on Thursday, July 1, with a 7 p.m. game against Dover. --- Rockaway bows to Vernon, 10-2 ROCKAWAY - Eight walks and five errors didn't help matters when Rockaway dropped a 10-2 decision to Vernon in an Iron Area Senior Babe Ruth Baseball League game played at Donatoni Park, on Wednesday, June 22. Tyler Moran was the starting pitcher for Rockaway and he worked five innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on only two hits while striking out two but he walked four and hit one batter. Shaun Meador finished up and he allowed five runs (three earned) on three hits while striking out one and also walking four. Rockaway (2-7-1) scored a run in the second inning when Rob Shilanik and Nick Gelinas walked and Steve O'Connor's single drove in Shilanik. It wasn't until the sixth inning that Rockaway, trailing 10-1 at that point, scored its last run of the game, Shilanik again staring things off with a walk, Gelinas following with a single and Evan O'Brien following with another single to drive in Shilanik. Rockaway got six hits - two by Brian Walls (2-for-3 with a double) and one each by O'Connor (RBI), Gelinas (two walks), Alex Valierio and O'Brien.

Rockaway loses to Mount Olive, 10-9
ROCKAWAY - After rallying twice to take the lead, Rockaway lost a 10-9 decision to Mount Olive when Mount Olive scored twice in the top of the seventh for the final rally of an Iron Area Senior Babe Ruth League game played at Donatoni Field here on Saturday, June 19. A walk and a hit batsman put Mount Olive runners on first and second to open the seventh. Mount Olive caught a break when a foul popup was dropped for an error and the batter took advantage of the second life by reaching on an infield single to load the bases. Two walks followed to force in what proved to be the tying and winning runs. Rockaway (2-4-1) came back from a 1-0 first-inning deficit with two runs in the bottom of the second when Tyler Gribbons singled and Nick DeLucia and Kyle Corry each drew walks to load the bases. Nick Gelinas followed with a single to drive in two runs and give Rockaway a 2-1 lead. Mount Olive roared back with a seven-run third inning to take an 8-2 lead. Mount Olive had four hits and three walks with the big hit of the outburst a three-run homer by Chuck Novaky for the final three runs of the inning. Rockaway came back once again, however, taking advantage of three Mount Olive errors to score six times in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 8-8. Kyle Corry doubled to open the inning, stole third and scored when Doug Olson reached on a fielder's choice. Evan O'Brien and Brendan McCormick walked to load the bases and Olson scored when Bryan Healy reached on an error. Brian Walls also reached on an error as O'Brien scored the third run of the inning. Bases-loaded walks to Steve O'Connor and Nick DeLucia and a wild pitch brought home three more runs and the score was tied. Rockaway took a 9-8 led with a run in the bottom of the sixth when Corry singled, moved to second on Mark Kepler's sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored when Olson reached on an infield error. After Mount Olive regained the lead with its two-run flurry in the top of the seventh, Rockaway tried to get back into the game when walks to Moran and Gribbons put runners on first and second with two out, where they were stranded. Rockaway had seven hits with Corry leading the way by going 2-for-2 with a double, walk and two runs scored. Gelinas was 1-for-1 with two RBIs; O'Connor was 1-for-1 with a walk; Gribbons was 1-for-1 with a walk and a run scored; Moran was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored; Brian Walls was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored; and Olson was 0-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Three Rockaway pitchers gave up 10 runs on nine hits and 11 walks. Rockaway's next game is scheduled for Tuesday, June 22, against Newton at Peterson Field in Rockaway Township at 6 p.m. The team returns to Donatoni Field on Wednesday, June 23, for a 7:15 p.m. game against Vernon and is on the road again the next day with a 6 p.m. game against Denville-1 at Gardner Field in Denville.

Valierio walk-off single beats Denville-1, 5-4
ROCKAWAY - Pinchhitter Alex Valierio's one-out walk-off single drove in Tyler Moran and Kyle Corry as Rockaway rallied with three seventh-inning runs to beat Denville-1, 5-4, in a Iron Area Senior Babe Ruth Baseball League game played at Donatoni Park in Rockaway on Thursday, June 17. Denville-1 scored all four of its runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. Tyler Gribbons got the Rockaway seventh-inning game-winning rally started when he reached on a leadoff error. Moran followed with a single and Corry drew a walk to load the bases. Steve O'Connor singled in Gribbons to cut the Denville lead to a run at 4-3 and, after an out, Valierio was called upon to pinchhit and he worked the count to 3-2 before drilling his winning single to left-center on the 10th pitch of his at-bat. Denville (3-3) took the lead in the top of the inning when Sal Paranella singled, Matt Reggiani walked and Ben Lamac was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Vince Oliveri and Bobby Hanson drew back-to-back walks to force in two runs and Tom Moore followed with a two-run single to give Denville a 4-2 lead. Rockaway (2-3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Bryan Healy walked, Brian Walls singled and Nick DeLucia reached on an error to load the bases and Gribbons followed with an RBI single. Rockaway made it 2-0 in the third when Nick Gelinas walked, took second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on Brendan McCormick's single. Walls (1-0), the third of three Rockaway pitchers, got the win by getting the last two outs in Denville's seventh-inning rally. Moran started and pitched six innings of one-hit ball before allowing the first three Denville batters to reach in the seventh. O'Connor relieved and got an out but walked two batters before Walls was called in to pitch. Rockaway got eight hits with Moran going 2-for-3 with a run scored; McCormick was 1-for-3 with an RBI; Gribbons was 1-for-03 with an RBI and run scored; O'Connor was 1-for-3 with an RBI; Mark Kepler was 1-for-3; Valierio was 1-1 with his two-run game-winning single; Walls was 1-for-3; Corry was 0-for-1 with two walks and a run scored; Nick Gelina was 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored; and Healy was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Rockaway is at home to first-place Mount Olive on Saturday, June 19, with a 10 a.m. game at Donatoni Park. --- Rockaway held to four hits in 8-3 loss to Morris Catholic ROCKAWAY - Morris Catholic took advantage of five errors to score seven unearned runs and held Rockaway to four hits in an 8-3 victory over Rockaway in an Iron Area Senior Babe Ruth Baseball League game played at Donatoni Park on Wednesday, June 16. Morris Catholic scored a run in the top of the first on a single and two errors, but Rockaway got it right back in its half of the inning when Evan O'Brien walked, stole second, and scored on Brian Walls single. Two more Rockaway errors in the top of the fourth allowed Morris Catholic to score six unearned runs with two out to take a 7-1 lead and the winners made it 8-1 with a single run in the top of the sixth. Rockaway got its final two runs in the bottom of the sixth when Bryan Healy and Walls each reached on errors and moved up a base when Moran grounded out to second. Healy scored on a passed ball and Walls came in when Steve O'Connor followed with a single. Healy was the starting and losing pitcher, working the first five innings. Alex Valierio and Walls each threw an inning in relief. ROCKAWAY - Sixth-inning singles by Tyler Gribbons and Nick DeLucia were the only hits of the game for Rockaway in a 7-2 loss to Wharton in a Iron Area Senior Babe Ruth Baseball League game played at Morris Hills High School on Tuesday, June 15. Held without a hit and trailing 3-0 entering the sixth inning, Gribbons and DeLucia each singled and, after a double steal, each runner scored on passed balls to cut the Wharton lead to a single run at 3-2. Wharton came back in the bottom of the inning with six runs, highlighted by a bases-full, bases-clearing double by Bret Clifford. Steve O'Connor pitched the first five innings for Rockaway and took the loss. Shaun Meador finished up.

Vernon scored early in game
to defeat Rockaway, 5-2 -
ROCKAWAY - Vernon jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and Rockaway never could catch up in losing a 5-2 decision in an Iron Area Babe Ruth League game played at Vernon High School in Vernon on Thursday, June 10. Vernon scored an unearned run on a two-out rally in the first; the winners used a single, walk and an RBI double for a second-inning run; and then added three more runs in the third on a hit batter, walk, two-run double and a run-producing error. Rockaway got on the board in the top of the fifth when Brian Walls singled and Alex Valierio was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Brendan McCormick followed with a single to score Walls and Nick DeLucia followed with another RBI single to bring in Valierio. Rockaway got six hits in the game with Evan O'Brien finishing 2-for-3; McCormick going 1-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases; DeLucia finishing 1-for-3 with an RBI; Mark Kepler going 1-for-2 with a walk and stolen base; and Walls going 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base. DeLucia and Steve O'Connor each pitched three innings for Wharton with DeLucia starting and taking the loss. DeLucia allowed four hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out two, walking two and hitting a batter. O'Connor gave up no runs on four hits and struck out one while walking none. Rockaway is idle until Tuesday, June 15, when it plays Wharton at Bill Lewis Field in Wharton at 6 p.m. Rockaway returns home to Donatoni Park for its next three games - Wednesday, June 16, against Morris Catholic at 6 p.m.; Thursday, June 27, against Denville-1 at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, June 19, against Mount Olive at 7 p.m.

Healy's 4 RBI lead Rockaway to 15-5 win
ROCKAWAY - Winning pitcher Bryan Healy was 3-for-4 at bat with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored to lead Rockaway to a 15-5 victory over Denville-2 in an Iron Area Senior Babe Ruth League baseball game played at Donatoni Park here on Tuesday, June 8. Healy pitched the first four innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out five and walking two. Nick Gelinas and Nick DeLucia each pitched an inning of hitless relief to close out the game. Denville-2 (0-4) scored three times in the top of the first but Rockaway (1-0-1) came right back with three runs in its half of the inning to tie the score and then took the lead for good with a four-run flurry in the second inning. Tyler Moran was hit by a pitch to open Rockaway's first-inning rally. Moran went to second on an error on a pickoff attempt and then scored on Healy's first hit, a single. Healy moved up on a passed ball nd scored on a single by Brian Walls. Walls took second on a passed ball and scored when Alex Valierio followed with a single. Rockaway took the led for good with a four-run second inning when Tyler Gribbons, Steve O'Connor and Evan O'Brien singled for one run and, after Moran was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Healy followed with a two-run single. Moran scored the fourth run of the inning on a passed ball. After Denville-2 made it 7-5 with a two-run third inning, Rockaway made it 8-5 in the fourth when Kyle Corry singled, stole second and third, and scored on a single by O'Brien. Rockaway got three more runs in the fifth with Healy and Walls doubled for one run; Mark Kepler followed with an RBI single and, after Robert Shilanick walked, Nick Gelinas followed with a single to drive in Kepler. Healy got his fourth and final RBI when Rockaway scored four times in the sixth inning without the benefit of a basehit. Gribbons and Corry reached on an error; O'Brien and Moran walked to force in a run; Corry scored on a passed ball; Moran scored the third run of the inning when Healy reached on a forceout for his fourth and final RBI; and, after Walls walked, Healy scored the final run of the inning when Valierio grounded out. Rockaway, Dover tie, 5-5, in lightning-shortened game
ROCKAWAY - The weather determnined the final outcome of the game when Rockaway and Dover opened their Iron Area Senior Babe Ruth League baseball season at Donatoni Field here on Saturday, June 5. The game was halted by the umps because of lightening with the score tied at 5-5 and Rockaway batting in the bottom of the seventh inning and, when the lightening continued, the game was not resumed and declared a tie. Steve O'Connor started on the mound for Rockaway and threw the first 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out six and walking five. Tyler Moran took over in the top of the sixth and retired all four batters he faced, striking out two. Dover opened the game with a run in the first but Rockaway came right back with two in its half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Evan O'Brien doubled and, after Bryan Healy walked and both runners move up a base on a double steal, the runners score on wild pitches. Dover tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the third, but Rockaway came back to take a 3-2 lead when Alex Valierio, Rob Shilanick and NIck DeLucia walk the bases loaded and Valierio scored on an infield single by Brendan McCormick. Once again, Dover moved out ahead with two runs in the top of the third and once again Rockaway bounced back to take the lead at 5-4 with two more runs when Moran walked, Healy doubled, Moran scored on an error on a pickoff attempt, and Healy came in to score when Valierio followed with a single. Dover scored the last run of the game in the top of the sixth on two walks and a single, setting the stage for the lightning display that ended the game. Rockaway returns to Donatoni Field on Tuesday, June 8, for a 7 p.m. game against Denville-2.
