Perna's four goals top West Morris, 6-2

DENVILLE - Maddison Perna scored four goals to lead the Denville HUB Soccer Thunder U10 girls travel team to a 6-2 victory over West Milford in a Morris County Youth Soccer Association game played at SteamTrain Field in West Milford on Sunday, Sept. 19.
Ally DosSantos scored first for the Thunder, converting a throw-in from Anna Gebur for an early 1-0 lead. Perna followed with her first goal, getting assists from Isabella Patterne and Gebur and then scored again on an assist from Isabella Ley to make it 3-0 at the half.
West Milford scored on a penalty shot to open the scoring in the second half, but Perna got the three-goal lead back with an unassisted goal to complete her hat trick.
West Milford scored again to pull to within two goals, but Perna scored her fourth and final goal of the game on assists from DosSantos and Lara and Geber completed the scoring for the Thunder with an unassisted goal later in the second half.
Tori Izsa and Ariana Cicenia split the goaltending duties for the Thunder with Izsa facing no shots on goal in the first half and Cicenia finishing with three saves in the second half.
The Thunder coaching staff had praise for the aggressive goaltending play of Cicenia, who replaced starting keeper Izsa in the net because the Denville coaches wanted to give Izsa some time in the field.
Cicenia was particularly adept at attacking the ball before a West Morris forward had time to settle the ball and get off a shot. She endeared herself to her coaches and teammates on a play where she went out to face a West Morris forward only to take a hard shot right on the face.
Disoriented a bit from the shot, Cicenia nevertheless scrambled to regain her position only to get beaten by a quick shot in spite of her great effort.

"It was a great and gutsy effort," said head coach Jen Perna after the game. "She took a good hit to the face but still wanted to get back into position to stop another shot."
