Yan's goals, Finzel's big save
win Flight 3 title for Lightning
-
DENVILLE -- Julie Yan's second goal of the game with three minutes left in the game proved to be the game-winner when the Denville HUB Soccer Lightning U9 girls travel team defeated the Lenape Valley Flames, 5-3, to win the Flight 3 championship of the Morris County Youth Soccer Association in a game played at Todd Johnson Field here on Sunday, June 19, 2011.
The Lightning finished their championship season with a flight record of 8 wins, 2 losses and no ties for 24 points to finish ahead of runnerup Green Township Peace.
First-half goals by Presley Anderson (unassisted) and Yan, with an assist from Madison Verrone, gave the Lightning a 2-0 lead at the break.
Lenape Valley came storming out of the gates in the second half and scored on goals at the five- and nine-minute marks to tie the game at 2-2.
Kylie Landolpfo's unassisted goal at the 12-minute mark put the Lightning back into the lead, but the Flames countered three minutes later to tie the game again, this time at 3-3.
At the 27-minute mark, Yan scored the winning goal after taking a pass from Verrone to give the Lightning a 4-3 lead.
Lenape Valley wasted no time in moving the ball into Denville territory in an attempt to score the equalizer. With Long Valley pressing the attack, Denville was called for a push, giving the Flames a direct kick.
Lenape Valley got off a strong high kick that was on net, but Lightning keeper Hanna Finzel went as high as she could and got a hand on the ball to divert the kick off the crossbar. The ball bounced straight down and Finzel was able to pick up the ball to finish off her game-saving save.
The Lightning then put on a close drive that Presley Anderson finished with an unassisted goal with less than a minute left on the game clock.
Finzel played the first half in goal and finished with three saves. Meghan Chegwidden was in goal for the first 15 minutes of the second half and made two saves before Finzel came back into the nets for the final 15 minutes of play and made three more saves.

Yan's goals put Lightning within a win of title
    DENVILLE -
The Denville HUB Soccer Lightning U9 girls travel team needs a victory in its last Morris County Youth Soccer Association regular-season game to win the Flight 3 championship after beating the West Morris Lightning, 4-2, in a game played at Chubb Fields in Chester on Sunday, June 12, 2011.
The victory gives Denville a 7-0-2 (wins-ties-losses) record and 21 points, good for first place in Flight 3 and one point ahead of second-place Green Township Peace (6-2-1, 20 points).
A win for Denville over Lenape Valley on Sunday, June 19, in their 4 p.m. game at Todd Johnson Field here, would give the  Lightning the flight championship no matter what Green Township does in its final game Sunday.
"These girls have come a long way in such a short time period," said coach Mike Walsh after the game. "Last season they won two games in the same flight ... now we're looking at eight wins and a flight championship."
Julie Yan scored two second-half unassisted goals and Carley Mahan and Kylie Landolpfo scored first-half goals in Sunday's victory over West Morris.

The first-line defense of Sydney Huber, Katelyn Walsh and Chloe Driscoll played the first 50 minutes of the game and allowed West Morris only three shots on goal.
Denville took a 2-1 lead at the half when Mahan scored unassisted at the eight-minute mark and, after West Morris tied the score at the 27-minute mark, it took Landolpfo all of 20 seconds to put Denville back into the lead when she scored off an assist from  Madison Verrone.
Yan, one minute after her 15-minute stint in goal ended, scored unassisted and then added her second unassisted goal just two minutes later to give Denville a 4-1 lead.
West Morris scored the final goal of the game with nine minutes left to play.
