THE 2009 FALL SEASON

WEEK TEN
Wheels, Devils, Demons win regular-season finales

     DENVILLE - The HUB Soccer Wheels U10 boys travel team completed its season in Flight Four of the MCYSA with a 3 to 2 victory over the Rockaway Dragons in Rockaway on Sunday, Nov. 22.

    The victory gives the Wheels a final season record of 3-5-2 while Rockaway finished 0-10.
     Denville took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when Kyle Wilson passed the ball through the goalmouth to Josh Rand and Rand scored from three yards out.
    In the 20th minute, Jon Monacao sent the ball up from midfield to Marek Kosiorowski who redirected it for the score, giving Denville a 2-0 lead at the half.
    In the second half, Rockaway scored in the 47th minute before Pierce Rankin of the Wheels responded eight minutes later with an unassisted goal from 12 yards out. Rockaway scored the game's final goal in the 60th minute.
    Denville keepers Bryce Mott and Ian Beumee each played one half and each finished with two saves.

Demons U10 Boys
    The Demons finish completed their MCYSA play with an 8-1-1 record after beating the Mountain Lakes Mustangs, 3-0, at Todd Johnson Field on Sunday.
    Tommy Scalici wasted no time in giving the Demons a 1-0 lead as he took a pass from Aidan Schutt and scored a goal in the game's first two minutes of play, a goal that turned out to be the only score in the first half.
    The second half was scoreless until Aaron Territo and Thomas Fitzsimmons scored the last two Denville goals in the final 15 minutes of the game.
    Riley Furlong and Robert Plumb split the keeper duties and the shutout for the Demons with as Furlong stopped four shots in the first half and Plumb finished up with three second-half saves.

Devils U11 Boys
    The Devils completed their MCYSA season with a 6-2-2 record after rallying to beat Madison, 4-1, in a game at Madision High School in Madison on Sunday.
    Michael Coccia led the way with two goals for the Devils, scoring the team's first and fourth goals. Steven Digiovanna and Trevor Campanella each scored single goals for Denville.
    Ian Stempert, Andrew Vermaelen, Christopher Carey, Matthew Scafati and Campanella each had assists for the Demons.
    Madison scored in the first 10 minutes to take a 1-0 lead but the Devil defense led by Michel Whitehill, Conner Walsh, Andrew Muller, Trevor Nogus, John Hughes, Andrew Muller and Christopher Bartel was able to keep Madison off the scoreboard the rest of the game.
    Marco Cundari and Bartel each played goal for a half with Bartel stopping five shots in the first half and Cundari finished up with three second-half saves.

WEEK NINE
 Furlong 3 goals lift Demons
    DENVILLE - Riley Furlong scored three goals and Robert Plumb added two as the Demons beat the Green Township Bombers, 6-1, in an MCYSA game played at Evergreen Park in Green Township on Sunday, Nov. 15.
    The Bombers took a quick 1-0 lead but Furlong got that goal back with his first of three and Plumb socred his first of two to give the Demons a lead they would never lose.
    The second half was all Denville as Furlong scored two goals in the first five minutes to complete his hat trick; James Benjamin added the team's fifth goal; and Plumb wrapped up the game's scoring for the day with his second goal.
    Stevie Genung was in goal for the Demons in the first half and finished with four saves; Aidan Schutt stopped all three shots the Bombers put on net in the second half to close out the Demons' strong showing in goal.
    Tommy Scalici finished with two assists while Aaron Territo and Genung each had one.
    The Demons will take a record of 7-1-1 into their final game of the fall season, a 2:15 p.m. home game against Mountain Lakes on Sunday, Nov. 22.

Devils U11 Boys
    Connor Walsh's second-half direct kick from just outside the 18-yard mark was the only goal of the day for the Devils as they dropped a 4-1 decision to the Skyland Strikers in an MCYSA game played at Knuth Field here on Sunday.
    The Strikers scored twice in the last five minutes of the first half to take a 2-0 lead and then added a third goal five minutes into the second half before the Devils could get on the board with Walsh's goal.
    Marco Cundari and Ian Stempert split the keeper duties for the Devils and finished with a combined eight saves.
    The loss was only the second of the season for the 5-2-2 Devils.
    Michael Whitehill, Andrew Muller, Cameron Cipriano and Walsh drew praise from their coaches for their solid play during the game.

WEEK EIGHT
Wheels rally for 3-3 tie
     DENVILLE -  Caleb Tomkins and Marek Kosiorowski scored second-half goals as the Wheels fought back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the Warren Highlanders, 3-3, in an MCYSA game played at Todd Johnson Field on Sunday, Nov. 8.
    The Highlanders scored in the fifth and 17th minutes of the game to take a 2-0 lead, but Kosiorowski scored in the 35th minute off a pass from Kyle Wilson to cut the Warren lead to 2-1.
    Five minutes later, Warren scored again to regain its two-goal lead before Tomkins scored off a cross from Kyle Somogyi to bring the Wheels to within one again.
    Kosiorowski's tying goal - an unassisted score in the 53rd minute - tied the game at 3-3 where it stayed for the rest of the game.
    Wheels keeper Bryce Mott finished with 11 saves for the Wheels.
    Next up for the Wheels is a Sunday, Nov. 15, game against the Summit Dynamo at Todd Johnson Field here at 2:30 p.m.

WEEK SEVEN
Devils win; Wheels tied
     DENVILLE -  The HUB Soccer Devils scored both their goals in the first 15 minutes of the game and a stingy Denville defense made them stand up as the Devils beat the Vernon Pythons, 2-1, in a Morris County Youth Soccer Association  game played at Vernon on Sunday, Nov. 1.
    Andrew Vermaelen scored with an assist from Michael Coccia just eight minutes into the game and then the duo reversed roles seven minutes later when Coccia scored off a feed from Vermaelen.
    Ian Stempert played goal in the first half and finished with two saves as Andrew Muller, Connor Walsh, Matthew Scafati and Trevor Nogues led the defensive effort. In the second half, Walsh went into the nets and didn't have to make a single save as Cameron Cipriano, Trevor Campanella, Muller and Nogues kept the Python shooters well marked.

Wheels U10 Boys
    The Wheels and Madison Mavericks played to a 1-1 tie in an MCYSA game played at the Green Village Field in Madison on Sunday.
    After a scoreless first half, Marek Kosiorowski gave the Wheels a 1-0 lead when he scored with an assist from Pierce Rankin three minutes into the second half.
    Madison countered 13 minutes later and the keepers and the defenders took over after that and no more goals were scored.
    Bryce Mott was in goal the entire game and finished with 13 saves, aided more than once by the solid defensive play of Brian Gaffney.
    Next up for the Wheels is an MCYSA game against the Summit Dynamo at Todd Johnson Field here at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8.
WEEK SIX
Demons, Devils triumph
     DENVILLE - Riley Furlong and Aaron Territo each scored twice and David Connell and Tommy Scalici each added single goals as the Demons defeated the Madison Vipers, 6-1, in an MCYSA game played at Todd Johnson Field on Sunday, Oct. 25
    Riley Furlong got the only Denville assist when he his cross was finished by Connell in the Demon's four-goal first half.
    The win gave the Demons a 5-0-1 record and enabled them to hold on to first place in Flight 5 of their U9 age group.
    Aidan Schutt and Robert Plumb shared the keeper duties for Denville and made a combined four saves. The two Demon keepers got plenty of defensive help from backs Tommy Scalici, Jason Mooney and Spencer Barry.
    The Demons face the Summit Vasco on Sunday, Nov. 1, in a 1:30 p.m. game at Summit.

Devils U11 Boys

    Andrew Vermaelen scored the first two Denville goals and Steven DiGiovanna and Christopher Garvey each added single goals as the Devils defeated the North Warren Raiders, 4-1, in an MCYSA game played at Valleyview School on Sunday.
    The win over the Raiders (4-2-0) was the second in two weeks for the Devils, who are now 4-0-2 and all alone in first place in Flight 7 of their U11 age division.
    Conner Walsh got the assist on Vermaelen's first goal and Shawn Frier connected with Vermaelen on his second goal. Michael Coccia assisted on DiGiovanna's goal and Garvey's goal came after passes from Trevor Campanella and Matthew Scafati.
    Marco Cundari and Ian Stempert split the goaltending duties for the Devils and each stopped six shots in his half of play.
    The Raiders' lone goal came in the game's final minutes as Michael Whitehill, Christopher Bartel, Walsh and Scafati kept the Raiders away from the nets in the first half and Andrew Muller, Alec Mandel and Cameron Cipriano played solid defense in the second half.
WEEK FIVE
Demons, Wheels triumph 
    DENVILLE - Riley Furlong and Tommy Scalici each had a hat trick as the Demons beat the Mountain Lakes Mustangs, 9-0, in an MCYSA game played at RVA Fields in Boonton on Sunday.
    David Connell, Aaron Territo and Steve Genung each scored single goals and Thomas Fitzsimmons and Territo each had one assist.
    Genung and Furlong split the goaltending duties to share the shutout with Genung stopping three shots in the first half and Furlong finishing with one save in the second half.
    The Demons, who are now 4-0-1, will play in the ninth annual Rockaway Township Howl-O-ween Soccer Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 24, and return to MCYSA action against the Madison Vipers at Todd Johnson Field the next day.

Wheels 10U Boys
    Kyle Somogyi scored two goals and Pierce Rankin, Jon Monaco and Kyle Wilson each added single goals as the Wheels defeated the Rockaway Township Dragons, 5-0, in an MCYSA game played at Hudsonia Park in Rockaway Township on Sunday, Oct. 18.
    Bryce Mott had an asisst on on Somogyi's second goal and the others were unassisted with Monaco's goal coming when he curved in a corner kick.
    Ian Beumee and Mott shared the shutout in the Denville goal with Beumee making three second-half saves and Mott stopping four shots in the first half.
    The Wheels, now 2-3 on the season, travel to High Point next Sunday, Oct. 25, for a game against the Wildcats.

Devils U11 Boys
    The Devils scored on three penalty kicks on their way to a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over the previously unbeaten North Warren Raiders in an MCYSA game played at Sycamore Field in Blairstown on Sunday.
    North Warren brought a 4-0 record into the game; the Devils are now 3-2.
    Trailing 2-0, Christopher Bartel got the Devils' first goal when he converted a penalty kick 25 minutes into the game.
    Andrew Venmaelen scored Denville's second goal with an assist from Matthew Scafati at the 10-minute mark of the second half and Alec Mandel closed out the Devils' scoring with penalty-kick goals at the 20-minute mark and 28-minute mark of the second half.
    Ian Stempert was in goal for the Devils in the first half and finished with nine saves; Marco Cundari stopped three shots on goal in the second half for Denville.
    North Warren scored its two goals in 10 shots on net in the first 10 minutes of the game, but was kept off the board the rest of the way because of the solid play by the goaltenders and defenders Conner Walsh, Michael Whitehill and Cameron Ciprano.

WEEK FOUR
Devils, Demons triumph
      DENVILLE - The HUB Devils U11 boys travel soccer team didn't allow a goal in two weekend games - a 0-0 tie against the Chatham Raiders at Gardner Field on Friday, Oct. 2, and a 4-0 win over the Lenape Valley Red Bulls at Gardner on Sunday, Oct. 4 - and have now shut out their last three opponents to remain unbeaten with two wins and two ties in MCYSA play.
      The Devils put 11 shots on goal against the Raiders without scoring while goalies Ian Stempert (one save) and Connor Walsh (six saves) each worked a half to share the shutout for Denville.
      Christopher Bartel finished with four shots on goal, Sean Frier had three, Andrew Vermaelen had two, and Stempert and Walsh each had one.
     The closest the Devils came to scoring was late in the game when Frier broke in on the Chatham keeper only to have the goalie make an outstanding save to keep Frier from scoring.
     Against the Red Bulls in Sunday's game, Bartel scored on an assist from Steven DiGiovanna and Vermaelen scored unassisted in the first half. In the second half, Matthew Scafati scored unassisted and Michael Coccia scored on an assist from Dean Reinhardt.
      Marco Cundari had five first-half saves and Stempert stopped three shots on goal in the second half to share the shutout for Denville.
      Along with the strong play by the goalkeepers, defenders Michael Whitehill, Walsh, Scafati and Bartel contributed solid defensive efforts into both shutouts.

Demons U9 boys triumph, 7-1
      Aaron Territo, James Benjamin and Riley Furlong each scored two goals as the Demons beat the Green Township Bombers, 7-1, in an MCYSA game at Todd Johnson Field here on Sunday, Oct. 4.
      Robert Plumb celebrated his birthday by scoring the remaining Demon goal and then played goal in the second half where he made two saves for the Demons.
      Tommy Scalici had three assists for the Demons and Aiden Schutt was in goal for the Denville team in the first half.

Wheels U10 boys fall to Dynamo
     Kyle Wilson's penalty kick goal was the only score of the game for the Wheels U10 boys in a 4-1 loss to the Summit Dynamo in an MCYSA game at Summit on Sunday, Oct. 4.
     Wilson's goal tied the score at 1-1 in the second half, but Summit went on to score three unanswered goals to close out the game.
      Bryce Mott and Brian Gaffney split the goaltending duties for the Wheels, who are now 1-3 on the season.

WEEK THREE
Connell sparks Demons

     DENVILLE -  David Connell scored two goals and Thomas Fitzsimmons, Stevie Genung, Aaron Territo, James Benjamin and Tommy Scalici each scored one as the Denville Demons U9 boys travel soccer team defeated Chatham, 7-1, at an MCYSA game played at Lum Field in Chatham on Sunday, Sept. 27.
     Jason Mooney and Stevie Genung split the keepers duties for the Demons and finished with a combined four saves.

Dragons U8 Boys

      Devin Musser scored two unassisted goals and added an assist and Michael Landolfi scored twice but it wasn't enough for the Dragons U8 boys as they lost a 6-4 MCYSA decision to Long Valley at Long Valley on Sunday.
    Arjun Chidrawar and Gianangelo Dichio split the goaltending duties for the Dragons and finished with a combined 11 saves.

Wheels 10U Boys
     Kyle Somogyi and Ian Beumee scored first-half goals for the Wheels 10U boys but the Warren United Highlanders came back to take a 3-2 lead at the half and then scored the only three goals in the second half to complete a 6-2 victory in an MCYSA game played at the Meadowbreeze Field complex in Washington on Sunday.
WEEK TWO
Wilson goal lifts Wheels

    DENVILLEKyle Wilson's unassisted goal in the 18th minute of the game turned out to be the deciding goal as the Denville Wheels U10 boys soccer team beat the Madison Mavericks, 2-1, in an MCYSA game played in Madison on Sunday, Sept. 20.
     Madison took an early 1-0 lead before Denville's Marek Kosiorowski scored with an assist from Nick Penkrat to tie the game in the 14th minute, setting up Wilson's game-winning goal four minutes later.
     Bryce Mott was in goal for the Wheels (1-1) and he finished with eight saves.

Demons U9 Boys
      Aaron Territo broke a scoreless halftime tie with two second-period goals as the Denville Demons U9 boys traveling soccer team defeated Summit, 2-1, in an MCYSA game played in Summit on Sunday, Sept. 20.
      Tommy Scalici, Robert Plumb, Spencer Barry and Riley Furlong played a solid defense game for the Demons, who are now 1-0-1.

Dragons U8 Boys
    Devon Musser scored the only goal of the game as the Dragons U8 boys traveling soccer team beat the Roxbury Avalanche, 1-0, in an MCYSA game played at Todd Johnson Field in Denville on Sunday, Sept. 20.
     Musser's goal came early in the second half and a defensive effort led by Michael Landolfi and goalies Cole Dewees and Rohan Amin made the goal stand up. The Dragons are now 1-1.

WEEK ONE 
Demons tied in opener
     DENVILLE -  The Demons U9 boys travel team fought to a 1-1 deadlock with the Madison Vipers in the MCYSA opener for both teams at Madison on Sunday, Sept. 13.
     Following a scoreless first half, Tommy Scalici scored at the 33-minute mark to give the Demons a 1-0 lead only to have Madison tie the score nine minutes later.
