Frier, Vermaelen goals

DENVILLE - Sean Frier and Andrew Vermaelen scored the goals and the Denville HUB Soccer Devils U11 boys travel team defense allowed but four shots on goal in a 2-1 Morris County Youth Soccer Association victory over the West Paterson Spartans at Upper Knuth Field here on Sunday, May 16.
Frier converted a pass from Trevor Campanella for the only goal of the first half and then the Devils made it 2-0 early in the second half when Vermaelen scored on an assist from Matthew Scafati.
West Paterson cut the lead in half with its goal in the final five minutes of play.
Goalies Ian Stempert and Marco Cundari combined for three save in the game as the Devils' defense led by Cameron Cipriano, Conner Walsh, Andrew Muller and Michael Whitehill kept West Paterson from taking quality shots on the Denville goal.
The Devils next game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, against Phillipsburg at Lopat Middle School in Phillipsburg.

Devils rally for 3-1 victory over Highland
DENVILLE - Sean Frier, Andrew Vermaelen and Michael Coccia scored second-half goals as the Denville HUB Devils U11 boys travel team rallied for a 3-1 victory over the Highland Vikings in a game played at Lower Knuth Field on Sunday, May 2.
Highland scored the only goal of the first half but Denville tied the game at 1-1 early in the second half when Frier scored off a pass from Steven DiGiovanna.
Vermaelen scored what proved to be the winning goal when he converted a pass from Christopher Bartel and Bartel also got the assist when Coccia scored an insurance goal for the Devils.
Ian Stempert had a solid game in goal for the Devils, stopping six of the seven shots he faced. He had plenty of defensive help from defenders Cameron Cipriano, Conner Walsh, Michael Whitehill and Alec Mandel.

Frier, Carey goals beat Bandits, 2-1, for Devils
DENVILLE - Sean Frier and Christopher Carey scored in the first 15 minutes of the game and goalies Ian Stempert and Marco Cundari and the Denville HUB Soccer Devils U11 boys team defense made the goals stand up for a 2-1 victory over the Bridgewater United Bandits in a Morris County Youth Soccer Association game played at Alfred Brown Field in Bridgewater on Sunday, April 25.
Frier scored on assists from Conner Walsh and Andrew Vermaelen five minutes into the game and Carey scored on assists from Alec Mandel and Vermaelen at the 15-minute mark.
Stempert and Cunari, who stopped a combined nine shots on goal for the game, lost their bid for the shared shutout when Bridgewater (2-0) scored its goal in the final two minutes of play.
The Devils, who improved to 2-1 with the victory, were led on defense by the solid play of Cameron Cipriano, Andrew Muller, Michael Whitehill and Walsh in front of goalies Stempert and Cunari.

Devils lose opener to visiting Cyclones, 1-0
DENVILLE - The visiting Stateliner Cyclones scored the only goal of the game 10 minutes into the second half to defeat the Denville HUB Devils U11 boys team, 1-0, in a Morris County Youth Soccer Association game played at Knuth Farms Field here on Sunday, April 18.
Devils goalkeepers Marco Cundari and Ian Stempert each played a half and each finished with six saves while they were in the nets.
Devils' defenders Cameron Cipriano, Conner Walsh, Andrew Muller and Alec Mandel played strong games during the defensive battle.
Denville's Christopher Bartel came close to tying the score with about 20 seconds left in the game but his hard shot on net was turned aside by an acrobatic save by the Cyclone keeper.
