Devils bow to West Milford
in first round of playoffs
- DENVILLE - The Devils 11U travel baseball team came close - by a couple of feet, too - of advancing in the Off The Bench Sports Fall Baseball League post-season playoffs but instead were eliminated from the single-elimination competition with a 3-1 loss to No. 2 seed West Milford at West Milford on Saturday, Oct. 16. This was the same West Milford club that had beaten Denville, 14-4, in a game a week ago and the Devils "... fought hard and played well," in trying to reverse that decision, according to assistant coach Mike Walsh. The Devils, seeded No. 7 in the eight-team playoffs, trailed 3-1 going into the top of the sixth - their last at-bat - and got a life when Eric Gustavson singled with one out. After the second out was made, Aric Handabaka hit a shot to left field that looked as if it were going over the fence only to fall short to give Handabaka a double and leave runners on second and third. "It looked as if it had enough ... Aric hit the ball well," Walsh said. "But it was just a little short and the game would end with Eric and Aric still on base. "The boys played very well and we did give them a good finish ... they played one of the best teams in the league tough." West Milford scored two runs in the first and one in the second to take a 3-0 lead before Denville answered with its only run of the game in the top of the third inning. Kyle Bargfrede led off the Devils' third with a single. Will Kenny followed with a walk and Jarad Badalamenti was hit with a pitch to load the bases. Adam Wagner drew a walk to bring Bargfrede home. The Devils had other scoring chances, too. Kenny singled and Conner Walsh walked with two outs in the first inning and Bargfrede led off the fifth with a double but the Devils could not score in either inning. The Devils finished the season with a 5-5 record including regular-season and postseason play in the Off The Bench Sports Fall Baseball League. Bargfrede led the Devils' five-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with a run scored; Kenny was 1-for-2 with a walk, was hit with a pitch and scored a run; Handabaka was 1-for-3 with his double; Wagner was 0-for-2 with an RBI on his bases-loaded walk; Gustavson was 1-for-3. Badalamenti was the starting pitcher for the Devils and he worked three innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks while striking out five. Walsh finished up with two scoreless innings of two-hit ball with one strikeout. Notes: West Milford beat No. 6 seed Long Valley, 4-2, the next day and will face top-seed Vernon for the post-season title on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Vernon ... Vernon beat No. 8 seed Mount Olive, 13-7, and No. 5 seed Stateliners, 5-2, to reach the championship games ...
