DENVILLE - The API Ballaholics boys basketball team completed an undefeated season with a 40-26 victory over Faith+1 in the championship game of the Denville PAL Boys High School Rec League played at Lakeview Elementary School here on Friday, March 25, 2011. In the semifinal-round games played earlier in the evening, the Ballaholics beat Dylan's Villains, 50-29, and Faith+1 beat Showtime, 24-21. The Ballaholics finished the season with an 8-0 record as they won their second rec league championship in as many seasons. In the title game, Vincent Oliveri scored 14 points and Tom Boller added 13 to lead the Ballaholics. Alex Passannante scored six points; Bobby Hanson, Jimmy Kelly and Rob Sinegra each had two points; and Martin Henes had a free throw to complete the API scoring. Gary D'Alessandro, Conor Lovett, Anthony Mandanici and Brian Margolit also contributed to the victory. Faith+1, which finished the season with a 3-4 record, got a game-high 15 points from Esaun Mayo; Bruce Mayo added six points; Justin Gonzales and Spencer Severson each had two points; and Brian Patterson had a free throw. Hunter Liu and Chris Triggiani added rebounding and defense support for Faith+1. In the Ballaholics' semifinal-round win over Dylan's Villains, Sinegra led the way with 17 points and Boller also finished in double figures with a 10-point showing. Passannante added eight points; Oliveri scored six points; Bobby Hanson had three points; and D'Alessandro, Henes and Mandanici each finished with two points. For Dylan's Villains (2-5), David D'Achille and Vinny Sacco each had eight points; Andrew Punzo added seven points; and Alec Badalamenti finished with six points. In Faith+1's semifinal win over Showtime, Esaun and Bruce Mayo each finished with 11 points and Gonzales added the other two points. For Showtime (5-2), Justin Rotella finished with 16 points; Adam Kong added three points; and Zack Bakun finished with two points. Peter Chia, Mike Fortun, Peter Luce and Steve Arias also played for Showtime. The evening put an end to a season that featured "...168 players and 22 teams playing basketball on a Friday night," according to program director Bob Pharaoh. "The season and the final night went very well," Pharaoh said. "The kids seemed to be having a lot of fun - win or lose." "I would also like to publicly thank Ed Portela (assistant director and referee), Mike D'Achille (scorekeeper and "... anything else we needed him to do."), Vinnie Sacco (scorekeeper), Steve Tompkins (head ref) and referees Jeff Sintic and Alison Manchester ... without these volunteers, the program would not have been nearly as successful."

Villains, Ballaholics, Faith+1, Showtime reach Final Four
DENVILLE - The Final Four will be held on Friday, March 25, 2011, at Lakeview Elementary School here. No, it's not THAT Final Four, but it will be just as hotly contested as the four survivors of the Denville PAL boys high school rec basketball league playoffs square off in the semifinal games and championship games to determine the league's post season champion. Dylan's Villains, API Ballaholics, Faith+1, and Showtime are the four teams competing, having reached the semifinal round as the result of quarterfinal victories on . The semfinals will be start at 7:30 p.m. and 8:05 p.m. and the championship game is scheduled to follow at 8:55 p.m. API Ballaholic remained unbeaten at 6-0 with a 41-22 victory over XSP Supersonics. Rob Sinegra and Tom Boller led the way with nine points each for Ballaholic while Dylan Farrell had 12 points and Derek Grimm added eight for the Supersonics. Vinnie Sacco was 6-for-7 from 3-point range to lead Dylan's Villains (2-4) to a 48-42 victory over Mr. Swagg. Niko Kotoulas added 17 points and David D'Achille had eight for the winners while Mr. Swagg was led by George Mikula with 19 points, Kevin Luo with 10 points and Andy Plucinsky with eight points. Bruce Mayo's basket with seconds left to play sparked Faith+1 (2-4) to a 38-37 victory over Danky Geebz. Mayo finished the game with 21 points while Mike Stango had 13 for Danky Geebz. Showtime (5-1), the final team in the Final Four, won by forfeit. API Ballaholics won the playoff champsionship last season.

PAL's high school hoop league drawing more and more players -
DENVILLE - The Denville PAL's in-house recreation basketball program for high school boys is alive and well, thank you ... and it's attracting more and more players each year. The program - which is about a month into the 2010-11 season - is made up of 22 teams and 167 players. Last year's program featured 16 teams with 135 players and the 2008-09 season had 12 teams and 98 players. It now takes two gyms to conduct the Friday night games with five games scheduled each week for Lakeview School and six for Riverview School. "The program has certainly caught on," said program director Bob Pharaoh. "The boys are having a great time every Friday evening ... and they keep the idea of the league in proper perspective by having fun and enjoying the competition." On Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, the program held its "Events Day" and Alex Passannante won the free-throw shooting contest; Patric Paragian won the 3-point shooting contest; and Derek Grimm won the best-dunk contest. Ed Portela is the assistant director of the program; Bob Hyer is the head ref and scorekeeper; Steve Tompkins also refs; Mike D'Achille the program's photographer and also keeps score; and Vinny Sacco is another scorekeeper. DENVILLE - The Denville PAL boys high school rec program closed its 2009-2010 with the Ballaholics beating P-15, 70-46, in the post-season playoff championship game played at Lakeview School here on Friday, March 26. The Ballaholics jumped out to a 16-2 lead and were never headed as Rob Sinegra led the way with 19 points and Alex Passannante added 18, including a 5-for-6 showing from three-point range. Vincent Oliveri added nine points; Jim Kelly had seven; Connor Lovett finished with six; Martin Henes added four points; Brian Margolit had three points and Bobby Hanson and Anthony Mandanici each had two points to complete the scoring for the winners. P-15 was led by Connor Rush’s 16 points. Mark DeFeo scored nine points for P-15; Jake Marshall and Kevin Corely each chipped in with eight points; Chris Gurrieri had three points and Corey Brenner finished with two points. Both semifinal games were also played that Friday with P-15 beating Bojangles, 35-32, and Ballaholics stopping the Italian Stallions, 50-36. P-15 overcame a six-point deficit in the last two minutes to beat Bojangles and reach the title game. Defeo led the way with 10 points; Rush added seven; Corley finished with six; Chris Gurrieri and Marshall had five; and Jon Gurrieri finished with two points. Bojangles was led by Chris Powers’ 11 points while Craig Kimbrough had eight points; Brandon Cuevas finished with five points; and Ryan Connolly and Mike Lombardo each had four points. Kelly scored 13 points to lead the Ballaholics in their semifinal victory. Sinegra and Passannante each finished with 12 points; Lovett and Mandanici each had four points; Margoit had three points; and Oliveri had two points to round out the scoring. Nick Graessle scored 10 points and Miles Kong and Miguel Jiminez each added eight for the Italian Stallions. Brent Newton and Nick Skarbek each chipped in with four points; and Joe Skarbek added two points to complete the scoring totals for the Stallions.
Playoff Notes: Program director Bob Pharaoh points out that Mike D’Achille, Ed Portela and Steve Tompkins were key in the smooth running of the program throughout the season ... “Mike didn’t miss a week in handling the clock and keeping score at all our games,” Pharoh said. “Ed was our ‘jack-of-all-trades’ who pitched in wherever we needed help and Steve did a great job of refereeing and controlling the games.” ... Charley Brown’s Restaurant and Denville Pizza awarded gift cards to the Ballaholics and P-15 teams that participated in the championship game.

Bojangles, P15, Ballaholics, 'Stallions' Reach Final Four
DENVILLE - It will be Bojangles vs. P-14 and the Italian Stallions vs. the Ballaholics in the Final Four of the Denville PAL High School Boys Rec Basketball League at the Lakeview Middle School here on Friday, March 26.. In quarterfinal-round action at Lakeview on Friday, March 19, Bojangles turned back Urintrouble, 51-41; the Italian Stallions beat Young Money, 29-22; the Ballaholics defeated 0.04 Seconds, 68-25; and P-15 beat The Mics, 38-21. The Bojangles-P14 game will start at 7:15 p.m. and the Ballaholics-Italian Stallions contest will be held at 8 p.m. After a short rest following the second game, the championship game will be held at approximately 9 p.m.

Young Money, Urintrouble, Bojangles win first-round games
DENVILLE - The Denville PAL High School Boys Rec Basketball League held its first round of post-season playoffs on Friday, March 12, at two sites here. In games played at Lakeview Elementary School, 0.04 Seconds beat Basket Buddies, 37-23, and Urintrouble edged Cluck U, 24-21. At Riverview Elementary School, Young Money beat The Lizards, 29-25; Bojangles stopped Metallica, 60-16; The Mics beat Lemon Oreos, 39-27; Italian Stallions defeated Kings, 46-15, the Ballaholics beat the Bhalms, 72-46, and P-15 stopped IRSOHAWT, 37-23. The quarterfinals will be held Friday, March 19, at Lakeview - a switch in the schedule that had the quarters orginally scheduled for Riverview, which is closed because of flooding in the township.
Game times remain the same with with Urintrouble opening against Bojangles at 6:30 p.m.; Young Money facing the Italian Stallions at 7:15 p.m.; 0.04 Seconds facing the Ballaholics at 8 p.m.; and The Mics playing P-15 at 8:45 p.m.
