DENVILLE PAL HIGH SCHOOL BOYS REC
All-Star Game a slam dunk
|
DENVILLE - When Bob Pharaoh finished taking names of the high-school aged boys who came out for the Denville PAL High School Boys Basketball Rec League program last fall, he had 135. "A record number," says Pharoah, the director of the program. "We were able to field 16 teams this season." The league plays its games on Friday nights at Riverview School and the players not only form their own teams, they also act as coaches. "It is a lot of fun but it can also be very competitive at times," Pharoah says. "The main thing is that a lot of high school kids who aren't good enough to - or maybe can't for whatever reason - play on the high school team get a chance to continue playing a game that they love right here." There are two weeks remaining in the regular season and then league playoffs will be conducted from the Fridays of March 12, 19 and 26. The league held its All-Star game on Friday, Feb. 12, and the Senior/ Freshman team beat the Sophomore/Junior team, 111-109. The teams were picked by the players in the league. They kept a running team score (for bragging rights) on the game, but no individual scores were recorded. The Senior/Freshman team was made up of Jake Marshall, Marc DeFeo, Connor Rush, Joe Skarbek, Miles Kong, Brent Newton, Colin Yuill, Dan Bubak, Nate Casey, Robbie McCormick, Jeff Iverson, Steve Allaman, Anthony Caruso, Jesse Garza, Tim Olinowsky, Ryan McAteer, Dremere Anthony and Connor Miskowski. The Sophomore/Junior roster included Anthony Mandanici, Vincent Oliveri, Alex Passannante, Caraig Kimbrough, Ryan Rodriquez, Blake Meza, Steve Arias, David D'Achille, Rich Bautista, Richie Stepanian, Derek Grimm, Mike Campman, Nick DiVite, Ryan Mariani, Dan Zingone, Andy Plucinsky and Kevin Luo. A dunking contest attracted 18 participants and the 3-point shooting contest had 23 long-range shooters competing. Alex Passannante won the dunking contest with Derek Grimm placing second and Tim Yuen won the 3-point shooting contest with a 2-for-2 performance. Ten other players made one shot in two attempts.
It was a busy night for Pharaoh, but he had his usual helpers on hand in Ed Portela, the program's assistant director; Steve Tompkins, the head referee; and Mike D'Achille, who runs the clock, keeps score and even takes pictures.
"They have been a huge help in running this program," Pharaoh said. "Without any one of them, a lot of stuff doesn't work as well."
As for the night itself ... "The kids had ball," Pharaoh says. "The spectators gave the kids a lot of support and also seemed to enjoy the festivities. "The entire evening was a good example of why we have this program - it's the participation, not the winning."
