Denville bows to Mt. Olive
in first round of playoffs

DENVILLE - The Denville PAL 7th-grade basketball travel saw its season come to an end when Mount Olive went on a second-half run en route to a 44-32 victory in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League first-round playoff game played at Morris Technical School here on Saturday, Feb. 26.
Denville led 10-6 after one period of play and still held a two-point lead at 16-14 at the halftime break.
Mount Olive opened up a five-point lead after going on a 12-5 run in the third period and then put the game out of reach with an 18-11 fourth quarter.
Ryan Chegwidden led Denville in scoring with eight points. Michael Chapman and Jared Badalamenti each scored seven points; Brian Chegwidden and Nick Mills each scored four points; and John Scalera completed Denville's scoring with two points.
Denville finished the season with an 11-6 record and, according to assistant coach Joe LaRiccia, "... had a very successful season in spite of the first-round playoff loss."

Hanover 2nd-half rally tops Denville, 54-43
DENVILLE - For the second consecutive game, the Denville 7th-grade boys travel basketball team was outscored in the second half to turn a close game into a double-digit loss, the latest one a 54-43 setback at the hands of Chester in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game at Valleyview Middle School on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011.
Denville finished the regular-season with an 11-5 record and in seventh place in the 20-team league and will open the playoffs on Saturday, Feb. 26, with a 1 p.m. game against Mount Olive at Morris Vo-Tech here.
Chester (12-4) opened the game with a 14-10 lead after one quarter, but Denville came back to cut the lead to one at 26-25 at the half. Chester lengthened its lead to seven points at 43-36 after three quarters and then outscored Denville 11-7 in the final quarter to establish its 11-point margin of victory.
"For the second straight game, we got hurt by our defense and ball-handling in the second half," said head coach Joe LaRiccia after the game. "We didn't shoot very well from the free-throw line, either -- we were 3-for-19."
Michael Chapman had a game-high 16 points for Denville with Brain Chegwidden also scoring in double figures with 13 points. John Scalera and Luke Urbanik each finished with four points and Nick Mills, Jared Badalamenti and Mark Andrian each had two points to complete Denville's attack.

Turnovers hurt in 54-42 loss to Hanover
DENVILLE - The Denville 7th-grade boys travel basketball team suffered a rash of second-half turnovers that resulted in a 54-42 loss to Hanover in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game played at Hanover on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011.
The teams battled to a 26-26 standoff at the half, but Hanover took control with a 17-10 third-period edge and then outscored Denville 11-6 in the final period to produce its 12-point margin of victory.
"Too many turnovers led to too many Hanover fast-break baskets," said Denville head coach Joe LaRiccia after the game. "Then we couldn't cut into their lead in the fourth quarter."
John Scalera finished with a team-high 12 points and Michael Chapman added 11 for Denville, now 11-4 for the season. Jared Badalamenti and Ryan Chegwidden each finished with six points; Luke Urbanik added three points; and Luidgi Faubert and Brian Chegwidden each scored two points to complete the scoring.

Denville early 20-9 run defeats Sparta, 64-36
DENVILLE - A full-court press that led to four turnovers and eight points sent the Denville 7th- grade boys basketball travel team out to a 20-9 first-quarter lead on its way to a 64-36 victory over Sparta in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game played at Valleyview Middle School her on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011.
Michael Chapman scored seven of his team-high 13 points in the first period while Ryan Chegwidden, who also finished with 13 points for Denville, added four points.
Denville increased its lead to 14 points by the halftime break and then proceed to outscore Sparta, 35-21 in the second half to seal the victory.
Jared Badalamenti also reached double figures in scoring, finishgin with 11 points. John Scalera added eight points; Joe LaRiccia and Luidgi Faubert each added six points; Nick Mills scored five points; and Brian Chegwidden finished with two points to round out Denville's scoring for the game.
Denville's next game is a 7:45 p.m. start against Hanover on Thursday, Feb. 17, at Hanover.

Mills, Chegwidden lead way to 57-33 victory
DENVILLE - The Denville seventh-grade boys travel basketball team used a full-court press to race out to an early lead in a 57-33 victory over Morristown in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game played at Morristown on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011.
Turning turnovers into fast-break baskets, Denville jumped out to a 27-9 lead after one quarter of play and was never headed. The winners used a strong passing game and solid defense to widen its lead to 37-12 at the half and 48-16 after three quarters in improving its season record to 10-3.
Nick Mills and Brian Chegwidden each scored 12 points for Denville; Michael Chapman added 10 points; Ryan Chegwidden and Luidgi Faubert each scored five points; John Scalera finished with three points; and Joe LaRiccia and Jared Badalamenti each had two points.

Denville's 8-game win streak snapped, 48-30
DENVILLE - The Denville 7th-grade boys basketball travel team's eight-game winning streak ended this past weekend when it lost a 48-30 decision to first-place Randolph-Blue in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game played at Randolph Middle School on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011.
Randolph-Blue (11-2) jumped out to a 13-5 first-quarter lead and led by 17 at the half and Denville never threatened.
Denville (9-3) which won one of its first three league game before going on its eight-game winning streak, is in fourth place in the 7th-grade division of the league.
Michael Chapman led Denville in scoring with 10 points. Brian Chegwidden added nine, John Scalera had four points; Ryan Chegwidden, Nick Mills and Luidgi Faubert each scored two points; and Jared Badalamenti had a free throw to complete the Denville scoring.
Denville's next game is against Morristown on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at the Morristown Neighborhood House at 7 p.m.

Big 15-0 third quarter run helps beat Sparta, 64-44
DENVILLE - A 15-0 run in the third quarter all but sealed the victory when the Denville 7th-grade boys basketball travel team defeated Sparta, 64-44, for its eighth consecutive Lakeland Youth Basketball League victory in a game played at Sparta Middle School on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011.
Denville (9-2) opened with a 22-15 lead after one period of play and made it 32-24 at the half before stopping Sparta cold in the third period to take a commanding 23-point lead into the final quarter.
Michael Chapman led all scorers with 29 points. Joe LaRiccia, Jared Badalamenti, Ryan Chegwidden and John Scalera each finished with six points; Luidgi Faubert had five points; Brian Chegwidden scored three points; Nick Mills added two; and Luke Urbanik had one point to complete the scoring for Denville.

Denville's No. 1 defense stops Roxbury, 57-16
DENVILLE - The Denville 7th-grade boys travel basketball team showed why it is the No. 1 defensive team in its division in the Lakeland Youth Basketball League when it held Roxbury Blue to two first-period points on its way to a 57-16 victory in a game played at Roxbury on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011.
Denville, giving up an average of 33 points a game, improved its league record to 8-2 with its seventh straight victory.
Denville led 16-2 after the first quarter and 31-6 at the half before outscoring Roxbury Blue 26-10 in the second half.
Nick Mills and Michael Chapman each scored 16 points to lead Denville in scoring. Brian Chegwidden added nine points; Joseph LaRiccia, Jared Badalamenti and John Scalera each scored four points; and Ryan Chegwidden and Luke Urbanik each scored two points to complete Denville's scoring.
Denville's next game is against Sparta at Sparta Middle School on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 7:45 p.m.

Chapman scores 26 points in win over High Point
DENVILLE - The Denville 7th-grade boys travel basketball team won its sixth straight game by scoring 29 points in the first quarter en route to a 63-35 win over High Point in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game played at Morris Vo-Tech here on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011.
The victory put Denville's season record at 7-2 and strengthened its hold on first place in the Lakeland league's B-Division.
An aggressive man-to-man full-court press baffled High Point as Denville jumped out to a 29-7 lead at the end of the first period and built its lead to 44-17 at the halftime break. Denville outscored High Point 19-18 in the second half to complete the victory.
Michael Chapman led Denville with 26 points. Brian Chegwidden and Ryan Chegwidden each finished with eight points; Jared Badalamenti had seven; Luidgi Faubert had six points; Luke Urbanik added four points; and Nick Mills and John Scalera each had two points to round out the scoring.
Denville's next game is against Roxbury Blue on Monday, Jan. 31, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lincoln/Roosevelt School in Succasunna.

DENVILLE - A defense that allowed no more than six points in any quarter lifted the Denville 7th-grade boys travel basketball team to a 61-16 victory over Roxbury Blue in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game played at Valleyview Middle School here on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011.
Denville (6-2) broke out to a 14-2 lead after one period of play and a 23-6 run the winners a commanding 37-8 halftime lead as the team eased to its fifth straight victory.
Brian Chegwidden led all Denville scorers with 14 points. Michael Chapman finished with 10 points; Jared Badalamenti had eight points; Ryan Chegwidden added seven points; Nick Mills and John Scalera each finished with six; Joseph LaRiccia and Luke Urbanik each had four points; and Luidgi Faubert rounded out the Denville scoring parade with two points.

Faubert's career-high 19 help beat Wharton, 60-53
DENVILLE - Luidgi Faubert scored a career-high 19 points - including nine in the fourth quarter - when the Denville seventh-grade boys travel basketball team defeated Wharton, 60-53, in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game played at Morris Vo-Tech on Sunday, Jan. 23.
Denville (5-2) took a 17-11 lead after one quarter and never trailed, maintaining a 25-19 lead at the half before outscoring Wharton 18-15 in the third period to take a nine-point lead into the final quarter.
Wharton tried to come back with a 19-point final period, but Denville - led by Faubert - finished the quarter with 17 points to keep Wharton at bay.
Michael Chapman added 18 points to Denville's winning effort; Ryan Chegwidden scored nine points; Joseph LaRiccia, Brian Chegwidden and Jared Badalamenti each scored four points; and Luke Urbanik scored two points to complete the scoring for Denville.
Denville's next game is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 27, a 6:30 p.m. start against the Roxbury B-Team at Valleyview Middle School here in the township.

Chapman's 18 points help defeat Montville
DENVILLE - Michael Chapman scored 18 points and the Denville 7th grade boys travel basketball team broke out to an early lead in a 53-33 Lakeland Youth Basketball League victory over Montville at Valleyview Middle School on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011.
Denville, which improved to 4-2 on the season with the victory, never trailed in the game as it took a first-quarter lead of 12-6 and then pulled away to a commanding 30-11 lead at the half on the way to its 20-point victory.
Ryan Chegwidden and Brian Chegwidden also scored in double figures as Ryan finished with 11 points and Brian added 10.
Jared Badalamenti and Nick Mills each scored six points and Luke Urbanik finished with two points to round out the scoring for Denville.
Denville's next game is against Wharton at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 1 p.m. at Morris Vo-Tech here in the township.

Denville strong secong half tops Jefferson, 41-30
DENVILLE - The Denville 7th grade boys travel basketball team came on strong in the second half to defeat Jefferson, 41-30, in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game played at Jefferson on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011.
With the scored tied at 15-15 at the half, Denville (3-2) moved out to a three-point lead after three quarters of play and then took advantage of several fast-break baskets for an 18-10 fourth-quarter run to put away the game.
Mark Chapman led Denville's balanced scoring attack with 11 points and Ryan Chegwidden chipped in with 10 points, with six of them coming in the decisive fourth quarter.
Brian Chegwidden scored seven points; Jared Badalamento and Luigdi Faubert each scored four points; Joe LaRiccia added three points; and Nick Mills added two point to complete the scoring for Denville.
Denville will play Montville in its next league game, a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Valleyview Middle School here in the township.

Pinedo's 'farewell' 18 points help bea Hackettstown
DENVILLE - Juan Pinedo gave his teammates a nice goodbye present by leading the Denville 7th grade boys travel basketball team to a 68-20 victory over Hackettstown in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game played at Morris Vo-Tech here on Saturday, Dec. 18.
Pinedo, the team's leading scorer after four games, scored a personal-high 18 points to finish as the game's high scorer. Pinedo will be leaving Denville for Texas with his family soon because of a business move made by his father.
Denville (2-2) jumped out to a 20-7 first-period lead and never looked back, limiting Hackettstown to just eight points in the second half by using solid defense and rebounding.
Michael Chapman added 15 points to the Denville attack; Brian Chegwidden finished with 11 points; Joe La Riccia had nine; Nick Mills scored six points; Luke Urbanik had four; Jared Badalamenti had three points and John Scalera finished with two to round out the Denville scoring.
Denville won't play another league game until Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, when the team plays Jefferson at Jefferson in a 6:30 p.m. start.

Roxbury third-quarter outburst beats Denville, 48-28
DENVILLE - The Denville 7th grade boys travel basketball team played unbeaten Roxbury Gold close for the first half but fell victim to a third-quarter full-court press and went on to lose a 48-28 decision in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game played at Eisenhower Middle School in Succasunna on Tuesday, Dec. 14.
The two teams were tied at 8-8 after the first period and then Roxbury (4-0) had a 13-11 edge in the second quarter to take a 21-19 lead at the half. Roxbury opened the second half with its pressure defense and went on a 19-3 third-period tear to put the game out of reach.
"Roxbury Gold is one of the highest regarded teams in our age group and we haven't beaten them now in three years," said Denville assistant coach Joe LaRiccia after the game. "We gave them a good run in the first half but their press combined with some poor shooting on our part made the difference in the game.
"I really thought we had a chance after the first half ... it was a disappointing loss for us."
Brian Chegwidden led Denville (1-2) in scoring with 11 points while Nick Mills added five; Joe LaRiccia had four; Juan Pinedo finished with three; Ryan Chegwidden and John Scalera each had two points and Michael Chapman finished with a free throw.
Denville's next game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, against Hackettstown at Morris Vo-Tech here in Denville.

Chegwidden layup at 0:46 beats Randolph, 44-42
DENVILLE - Brian Chegwidden's breakaway layup in the final 46 seconds of the game gave the Denville 7th grade travel basketball team a 44-42 victory over Randolph in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League game played at Morris Vo-Tech on Saturday, Dec. 11.
Randolph had the ball with the score tied at 42-42 late in the game when Randolph missed a field goal attempt and Denville's Joe LaRiccia pulled down the rebound and threw the outlet pass that resulted in Chegwidden's game-winning shot.
Denville (1-1) led 13-6 after one quarter and 19-15 at the half before an 11-10 third-period sent the game into the final period of play with Denville holding a 30-25 edge. Late in the game, Randolph sank a free throw to tie the game at 42-42 and set up the final minute of play where Randolph missed and Chegwidden didn't.
Michael Chapman led the Denville scoring with 15 points and Chegwidden added 11 as the only other Denville player in double-figures. Jared Badalamenti added six points; John Scalera finished with four points; and Luidgi Faubert, Nick Mills, Luke Urbanik each finished with two points.
Next up for the Denville is a 7:45 p.m. game on Tuesday, Dec. 14, against Roxbury at Roxbury at 7:45 p.m.

Rally falls short as Denville loses in opener
DENVILLE - The Denville 7th grade travel basketball team's fourth-quarter rally fell short in a 48-44 loss to Wharton in a Lakeland Youth Basketball League opener for both teams at MacKinnon School in Wharton on Thursday, Dec. 2.
Trailing 37-25 going into the final period of play, Denville outscored the home team 19-11 before running out of time and suffering its four-point loss.
Wharton held leads of 15-11 after one period and 26-21 at the half as the lead changed five times in a close first half. Wharton opened the second half with a full-court press and went on an 11-4 run to take a 12-point lead into the fourth period.
Michael Chapman's 17 points led Denville in scoring while Brian Chegwidden added nine points. Joe LaRiccia chipped in with six points; Jared Badalamenti and Ryan Chegwidden each scored four points; and Juan Pinedo and Luke Urbanik each added two points to round out Denville's scoring.
The next game for Denville is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, against Randolph at Denville's home court at Morris Vo Tech.
