captures playoff title

      DENVILLE - Zimmerman Architects, which finished second in the regular-season standings, captured the playoff title in the 2010-11 Denville PAL 7th/8th Grade Rec Basketball League by defeating Serene Serene two games to none in a best-of-three championship series played at Lakeview Elementary School.
     Zimmerman, which finished the season with a 12-3 record, played super defense in both games, winning the first game, 21-4, on Saturday, March 12, and then taking the second game, 22-2, on Monday, March 14.
      Sarah Houtsma was the high scorer for Zimmerman in both games, scoring eight points in the first victory and 12 points in the second win.
      In the first game, Valerie Kampo added five points; Christina Punzo scored four points; and Samantha Bargfrede and Nadine Hirt each finished with two points.
      In the second game, Hirt and Bargfrede each had four points and Selena Miller finished with two points.
 Tara Vollmar scored all six points for Serene Serene, which finished the season with a 6-10 record. Serene Serene reached the championship series with a stunning 13-11 upset over Van Hoven Music in a semifinal-round game.

Kirat's basket with 0:58 left give Seren upset win

        DENVILLE - Abby Kirat's basket with 58 seconds left to play gave Serene Serene Hair Stylists a 13-11 upset victory over Van Hoven Music in a Denville PAL 7th/8th grade rec basketball playoff game played at Riverview Elementary School on Wednesday, March 9, 2011.
        Van Hoven, the top-seed in the five-team post-season playoff tournament, brought an 11-1 record and an 11-game winning streak into the game. Serene Serene, the No. 4 seed, is now 6-8 after the stunning victory.
        Serene Serene, which beat No. 5 seed Amscot Structural, 16-14, in a first-round game on Monday, March 7, at Riverview, will now face No. 2 seed Zimmerman Architects in a best-of-three series for the playoff championship.
        The first game is scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m. at Lakeview Elementary School; game No. 2 will be held on Monday, March 14, at Lakeview at 8 p.m.; and, if a third game is needed, the teams will square off again on Tuesday, March 15, at Riverview at 6 p.m.
 Kirat and Emily Portella each finished with six points for Serene Serene while Tara Vollmar added a free throw to complete the team's scoring.
 For Van Hoven, Nicole Krysa had a game-high eight points; Taylor Latorre scored two points; and Nicole Van Hoven finished with a free throw

Zimmerman, Serene win to reach semifinal round

     DENVILLE - Zimmerman Architects and Serene Serene Hair Salon each won first-round playoff games in a Denville PAL 7th/8th-grade girls rec basketball league doubleheader played at Riverview Elementary School on Monday, March 7, 2011.
     Serene Serene, the No. 4 seed in the playoffs, opened the doubleheader with a 16-14 victory over No. 5 seed Amscot Structural.
     Serene (5-8) was led by Courtney Knudson and Tara Vollmar, each of whom scored five points. Emily Portella added four points and Abby Kirat and Olivia Heckel each scored one to complete Serene's scoring.
     Katie Gleeson had a game-high eight points to lead Amscot (1-12). Erica Prill and Ria Ryerson each finished with two points and Allysa Kelly and Devyn Somogyi each added free throws to the Amscot point total.
     In the second game, Zimmerman Architects, the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, defeated No. 3 seed Feher Home Solutions, 16-10, by scoring eight unanswered points in the last four minutes of the game.
     Trailing 10-8, Samantha Bargfrede hit a jump shot to tie the score at 10-10; Nadine Hirt followed with back-to-back baskets to give Zimmerman a 14-10 lead; and Christina Punzo scored a basket for the final two points of the game.
     Sarah Houtsma, Punzo, Hirt and Bargfrede each scored four points for Zimmerman (10-3). Katie Ford and Kimmy Mann each had four points for Feher (5-8) with Emily Alfieri adding two.
     Serene faces top-seed Van Hoven Music on Wednesday, March 9, in an 8 p.m. game at Riverview for the right to face Zimmerman in a best-of-three championship series that will start Saturday, March 12.

Zimmerman, Feher Home triumph

       DENVILLE - Zimmerman Architects and Feher Home Solutions each won games in the Denville PAL 7th/8th grade girls basketball rec league at Lakeview Elementary School on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011.
       Zimmerman Architects defeated Serene Serene Hair Salon, 33-8, in the first game and Feher Home Solutions beat Amscot Structural Products, 21-14, in the second game.
       Zimmerman (9-2) held a 9-4 lead at the half but broke open the game by outscoring Serene Serene (3-7) by a 24-4 margin in the second half.
      Sarah Houtsma led Zimmerman with 13 points; Valerie Kampo added 10 points; Christina Punzo finished with eight point and Nadine Hirt had two points. Serene Serene was led by Courtney Kudson's six points and Emily Portella's two points.
      Kimmy Mann scored six points to lead Feher Home (5-5) to its victory. Olivia Zurek and Katie Ford each finished with four points; Erica Elliot had three points; and Emily Alfieri and Julia Sedwick each had two points to complete the score for Feher.
      Amscot (0-11) was led by the 10-point performance by Katie Gleeson while Devyn Somogyi and Erica Prill each scored two points.

Van Hoven tops Feher; Zimmerman wins

      DENVILLE - Van Hoven Music, trailing by a point midway through the second quarter, closed out the game with an 18-5 run to beat Feher Home Solutions, 23-11, in a Denville PAL Basketball 7th/8th grade girls rec league game played at Lakeview Elementary School here on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011.
      Nicole Krysa scored 10 points to lead Van Hoven (9-1) in scoring. Chrissy Esposito and Nicole Van Hoven each scored four points; Brenda Connolly added three points; and Sandy Voung scored two points to complete the scoring for the winners.
      For Feher (4-5), Olivia Zurek finished with five points and Katie Ford, Erica Elliot and Emily Alfieri each scored two points.

Zimmerman Architect turns up defense to win twice
       DENVILLE - Zimmerman Architects turned up its defense a notch in winning back-to-back games over Amscot Structural Products in the Denville PAL Basketball 7th/8th grade girls rec league at Riverview Elementary School on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 15-16, 2001.
       In Zimmerman's 24-6 win on Tuesday, Sarah Houtsma scored 11 points; Christina Punzo added seven points; and Selena Miller, Samantha Bargfred and Valerie Kampo each scored two points for the winners. Katie Gleeson scored all six points for Amscot.
       Zimmerman beat Amscot, 25-8, on Wednesday with Punzo leading the way with nine points; Kampo and Houtsma each scoring six points; and Bargfrede and Miller each adding two points. Gleeson had five points for Amscot with Kellyh Dzial adding two points and Ria Ryerson finishing with a free throw.

Feher Home Solutions, Zimmerman Architects triumph
      DENVILLE - Feher Home Solutions edged Zimmerman Architects, 11-9, and Van Hoven Music defeated Amscot Structural Products, 29-8, in a pair of Denville PAL Basketball 7th/8th girls rec league games played at Lakeview Elementary School here on Saturday, Feb. 12.
      Katie Ford and Emily Alfieri each scored four points and Erica Elliott added three points for Home Solutions. Christina Punzo had four points, Sahar Houtsma and Samantha Bargfrede each had two; and Nadine Hirt added one point to account for Zimmerman's scoring.
      In Van Hoven's victory, Taylor Latorre scored eight points; Chrissy Esposito and Nicole Krysa each scored six; Sandy Vuong added five points; and Jessica Gregory scored four points for the winners. Kelly Dzialo led Amscot with four points and Ria Ryerson and Allysa Kelly each scored two points.

Fehr edges Amscot; Van Hoven, Zimmerman win

       DENVILLE - Feher Home Solutions used a balanced scoring attack to edge Amscot Sturctural Products, 14-13, in a Denville PAL 7th/8th girls rec basketball game played at Riverview School on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011.
       Kimmy Mann, Julia Sedwick and Katie Ford each scored four points and Carly Moran added two points to complete the scoring for Home Solutions. Katie Gleeson led Amscot with a game-high eight points while Devyn Somogyi and Kate Tell each scored two points and Kelly Dzialo scored on a free throw.
       In other games played at Riverview earlier in the week:
       Van Hoven Music defeated Serene Serene Hair Salon, 22-5, on Tuesday, Feb. 8, as Nicole Krysa led the way with seven points. Also for Van Hoven, Sandy Voung, Chrissy Esposito and Jessica Corrolla each scored three points and Nicole Van Hoven, Brenda Connolly and Jessica Gregory each scored two. Emily Portella scored three points for Serene and Kelly O'Hara added two.
       In another game on Tuesday, Zimmerman Architects edged Amscot Stuructural Products, 20-19, on Sarah Hotsma's back-to-back field goals in the final three minutes of play. Hotsma finished with eight points; Christina Punzo scored six; and Selena Miller, Samantha Bargfrede and Valerie Kampo each scored two points for Zimmerman. Katie Gleeson scored a game-high 14 points for Amscot; Erica Prill added three; and Kate Tell finished with two points.
    On Monday, Feb. 7, Serene Serne Hair Salon edged Amscot Structural Products, 15-13, in a game that went back and forth throughout the contest. Abby Kirat led Serene with seven points; Courtney Knudsen added four points; and Emily Portgella and Tara Vollmar each finished with two points. Katie Gleeson scored a game-hit nine points for Amscot while Kelly Dzialo and Allysa Kelly each added two points.

Feher's 19-2 2nd-half rally leads to first win of season

      DENVILLE - Feher Home Solutions used a huge second-half rally to beat Serene Serene Hair Salon, 22-9, for win its first victory of the Denville PAL7th/8th girls rec basketball season in a game played at Riverview School on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011.
      Trailing 7-3 at the half, Feher (1-4) outscored Serene (2-4) by a 19-2 count in the second half to nail down its victory.
      Katie Fored led Feher in scoring with 12 points; Kimmy Mann added five points; Carly Moran scored three points; and Erica Elliott added two points to round out the scoring for Feher.
       Emily Portella scored five points for Serene and Olivai Heckel and Tara Vollmar each added two points.

Punzo's 12 points lead Zimmerman to victory

     DENVILLE - Zimmerman Architects went on a 15-2 second-quarter run in recording a 21-7 victory over Feher Home Solutions in a Denville PAL 7th/8th grade girls rec basketball game played at Lakeview School on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011.
     Christina Punzo scored 12 points to lead Zimmerman (5-1). Selena Miller added four points; Samantha Bargfrede had three points; and Sarah Houtsma finished with two points.
     For Feher (0-4), Julia Sedwick, Katie Ford and Emily Alfieri each had two points and Erica Elliott finished with one.,

Krysa's 13 points lead Van Hoven Music to win

     DENVILLE - Nicole Krysa scored 13 points to lead once-beaten Van Hoven Music to a 26-18 victory over Serene Serene Hair Salon in a Denville PAL 7th-8th girls rec basketball league game at Riverview School here on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011.
      Nicole Van Hoven added seven points and Sany Vuong, Brenda Connelly and Taylor LaTorre each finished with two points for Van Hoven, which improved to 5-1 on the season with the win.
      For Serene (2-2), Emily Portella, Olivia Heckel and Abby Kirat each had four points, Tara Vollman added three, Cortney Knudson had two and Kelly O'Hara had a free throw.

      DENVILLE - Serene Serene Hair Salon bolted out to a 12-0 halftime lead and then had to withstand an intense comeback bid by Amscot Stuctural Products to hold on to a 16-12 victory in a Denville PAL 7th/8th girls rec basketball game played at Riverview Middle School on Monday, Jan. 24, 2011.
      Serene (2-3) was led by the six-point performance by Olivia Heckel while Courtney Knudson and Abby Kirat each finished with four points and Emily Portella added two points to complete the scoring.
      Katie Gleeson scored six points for Amscot (0-3) while Allysa Kelly added four points and Devin Somogyi scored two points to round out the attack.
      In two games played Saturday, Jan. 22, Zimmerman Architects defeated Serene Serene Hair Salon, 29-8, and Van Hoven Music beat Feher Home Solutions, 18-6, at Lakeview Middle School.
      Sarah Bargfrede led Zimmerman (4-1) with 11 points; Christina Punzo added eight points; Samantha Bargfrede added four points; and Selena Miller, Valerie Kampo and Nadine Hirt each scored two points. Knudson had four points for Serene while Amanda Ewert and Tara Vollmar each had two.
     Nicole Krysa led Van Hoven (4-1) with seven points; Taylor Latorre had four; Chrissy Esposito finished with three; and Brenda Connolly and Sandy Vuong each had two points. For Feher (0-3), Carly Moran scored three points; Emily Alfieri had two; and Kimmy Mann scored on a free throw.

     With Zimmerman (3-1) holding a 9-6 lead, Latorre scored six straight points - her only points of the game - to put Van Hoven (3-1)into a 12-9 lead that it held the rest of the game.
     Nicole Krysa scored four points for Van Hoven while Nicole Van Hoven and Sandy Vuong each finished with two points to complete the scoring for the winners.
     Sarah Houtsma led Zimmerman in scoring with four points; Samantha Bargfred added three points; and Christina Punzo and Nadine Hirt each finished with two point to complete Zimmerman's scoring.

Van Hoven, Zimmerman win in rec league hoops

       DENVILLE - Van Hoven Music and Zimmerman Architects each used strong offensive showings in the first half to claim victories in Denville PAL 7th/8th girls recreational basketball games played at Riverview School here in the township.
      Van Hoven Music (2-1) took a 16-4 first-half lead on its way to a 27-14 victory over Amscot Structural Products on Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, and Zimmerman Architects (3-0) came back the next evening and bolted out to a 9-0 first-half lead on its way to a 21-13 victory over Feher Home Solutions.
      Taylor Latorre led Van Hoven with 12 points, Nicole Van Hoven added nine points, Nicole Krysa scored four and Sandy Vuong finished with two points.
      Katie Gleeson scored eight points for Amscot and Allysa Kelly, Devyn Somogyi and Kate Dwyer each added two points.
      Zimmerman Architects had a balanced scoring attack as Samantha Bargfrede finished with six points, Sarah Houtsma added five, Valerie Kampo and Christina Punzo each scored four points and Nadine Hirt added two points.
     For Feher Home, Katie Ford had four points, Carly Moran added three points, and Kimmy Mann, Erica Elliott and Julia Kornisky each finished with two points.

Zimmerman, Van Hoven triump in rec league

      DENVILLE - Zimmerman Architects improved to 2-0 and Van Hoven Music won its first game of the season in games played at Lakeview School here during Week 2 of the Denville PAL 7-8 grade girls rec league on Saturday, Dec. 18.
      Zimmerman defeated Serene Serene Hair Salon, 21-8, while Van Hoven Music beat Feher Home Solutions, 22-7, in the other game.
      Zimmerman's smothering defense led to a 16-0 run that started midway through the first quarter and lasted until midway through the third quarter to seal its victory.
     Samantha Bargfrede scored five points for Zimmerman (2-0) while Nadine Hirt, Christina Punzo, Selena Miller and Valerie Kampo each added four points.
     Courtney Knudson had four points for Serene (1-1) with Tara Vollman and Emily Portella each added two points.
     Van Hoven (1-1) outshot Feher Home (0-1) by a 10-2 margin in the third quarter to pull away to its victory.
     Sandy Vuong had eight points to lead Van Hoven while Chrissy Esposito added six. Taylor Latorre had four points and Nicole Van Hoven and Nicole Krysa each finished with two to complete the scoring for the winners.
     For Feher Home, Julia Sedwick finished with three points and Kimmy Mann and Carly Moran each had two.

Zimmerman, Serene Serene win in openers

      DENVILLE - Zimmerman Architect and Serene Serene Hair Salon each won their games when the Denville PAL 7th-8th grade girls rec basketball league opened its 2010-11 season on Saturday, Dec. 11.
      Zimmerman beat Van Hoven Music, 22-16, in double overtime and Serene Serene beat Amscot Structural Products, 22-18, in games played at Lakeview Middle School.
      Christina Punzo scored on a 3-point field goal for Zimmerman to send the game into overtime and then hit another 3-pointer in the second extra session to put Zimmerman ahead for good.
      Punzo finished with 17 points while Samantha Bargfrede added three points and Valerie Kampo scored two points to complete the scoring for Zimmerman. Nicole Krysa led Van Hoven with eight points while Taylor Latorre added five points and Sandy Vuong finished with two points.
      Serene Serene built a 16-6 lead and then had to hold off a late-game rally by Amscot to nail down its victory.
      Courtney Knudson led Serene Serene in scoring with eight points. Tara Vollmar added six points; Abby Kirat finished with four points; and Amanda Ewert and Emily Portella each added two points to complete the winner's scoring totals.
      Katie Gleeson had a game-high 14 points for Amscot while Kate Tell and Deven Somogyi each added two points.
