The game was the second game of a split doubleheader for the Knights (3-1), who lost a game to the American Legion in an earlier game (see story below) Saturday by the same 7-5 score. Russo came on in relief of starter Chris Bailen with two outs in the third inning and pitched five-hit ball the rest of the way, striking out three and walking only one to pick up the victory. Rotary (2-2) scored its run in the top of the sixth off Paulin when Conner Walsh scored on a groundout by Aric Handabaka. Paulin allowed two hits and a walk and struck out two in his inning of work. Bryce Mott was 2-for-3 with a triple for Rotary; Jake Sinegra and Walsh were each 1-for-2; and Ryan Ackerman was 1-for-1. Walsh, Handabaka, Ackerman and Sinegra each pitched for Rotary (2-2). The Knights and Rotary continue their series on Thursday, April 28, in a 6:30 p.m. game; the Knights face American Legion in a makeup game on Saturday, April 30, at 9 a.m. and then face Rotary in a noon game. All three games are at Gardner Field. --- Faccenda, Roche lead way in 5-4 win over Legion DENVILLE - Owen Roche drove in the winning runs with a three-run triple and Tyler Faccenda pitched 4.1 innings of one-hit relief with 11 strikeouts when the Knights of Columbus came from behind to edge American Legion, 5-4, in a Denville Little League Majors Division game played at Gardner Field on Thursday, April 21, 2011. Roche, who finished 3-for-3, came to bat in the bottom of the fourth inning with two out and the bases loaded and the Knights trailing 4-2 and put his team ahead for good at 5-4 when he cleared the bases with his long triple to right field. American Legion, which had scored two runs in each of the first two innings, took a 4-1 lead into the fourth inning and got the first two outs before the Knights started their rally. Chris Sanzone started the four-run uprising with a walk and, after taking second on a wild pitch, scored on Tommy Sacalici's single to right-center. Ryan Russo and Faccenda drew back-to-back walks to load the bases and Roche followed with his triple to drive in the final three runs of the game. The Knights scored their other run in the first inning when Ryan Russo singled with one out; Faccenda reached on a fielder's choice and stole second; and Dylan Lynch's popup was mishandled, allowing Faccenda to score. Danny Buccafusca started for the Knights and gave up four runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out one in 1.2 innings. Faccenda came in to pitch in the top of the second with two outs and a man on third and retired the next batter on the first of his 11 strikeouts. Faccenda struck out the first seven batters he faced and finished by striking out 11 of the 14 hitters he faced. The only hit he gave up was a bunt-single to Joe Taylor leading off the fifth inning. Faccenda finished with a flourish, striking out the side in the bottom of the sixth and final inning. Scalici was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run to spark KofC's seven-hit attack as he and Roche got five of KofC's seven hits. Russo was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored; Dylan Lynch was 1-for-3; Faccenda was 0-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored; and Sanzone was 0-for-0 with two walks and a run scored. Defensively, Faccenda made a nice play on an attempted fifth-inning squeeze bunt and was able to get the ball to third baseman Chris Bailen in time to tag out the runner scrambling back to third. Later in the inning, Faccenda knocked down a liner back to the mound and, after falling to the ground to get the ball, was able to throw out the runner while still on his knees. After the game, KofC manager Gary Faccenda had special praise for Ryan Russo, who was catching for the first time in his career. "Ryan did a nice job of catching Tyler, who was throwing very hard today," Faccenda said. "It was obvious that Tyler was very comfertable with the job Ryan was doing in back of the plate." On Saturday, April 23, at 6 p.m. at Gardner-2, the Knights of Columbus and American Legion are scheduled to complete their opening-day game that was suspended with American Legion leading 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth. After the completion of the suspended game, the teams are scheduled to play the third game of their opening-season four-game series.
