DISTRICT ONE LL TOURNAMENT

Denville falls in extra innings;

Brosious has 2 HRs, 5 RBIs

-

DENVILLE - In a game that saw five lead changes and needed extra innings to determine a winner, the Denville 12-year-old All-Stars lost an 11-10 seven-inning decision to Par-Troy West in a District One Little League Baseball Tournament game played Friday, July 9, at Gardner Field here in the township.
The loss eliminated Denville from further play in the double elimination portion of the tournament. Denville had qualified for the eight-team competition by finishing second in Pool B with a 4-1 record.
"We went down fighting," Denville manager Randy Weick said after the game. "The kids came back nice and we put some pressure on them by scoring runs late in the game ... but they came back, too, and finished an exciting game by scoring one more run that we did."
Tyler Brosious led the fight as he finished the day with two homers and a double, drove in five runs and scored three.
Denville, which lost the coin-flip for home team, scored three runs before Par-Troy West even batted.  Brosius got the inning started with a double and Dillon Sinegra and Justin Weick followed with walks to load the bases.
Brosious scored on a wild pitch and Ryan Chegwidden followed with a double to drive in Sinega and Weick and Denville had its early three-run lead.
Par-Troy came back with two hits and a run in in its half of the first inning before taking the lead at 5-2 with a four-run flurry in the bottom of the second on two singles, two walks and two errors.
After a scoreless third inning, Denville erupted for five fourh-inning runs to take an 8-5 lead.
Michael Chapman and Brian Chegwidden walked and Alex Borowiec was hit by a pitch to load the bases. John Grader followed with another walk to score Chapman and Brosious hit a grand slam to center to give Denville its three-run lead.
Par-Troy West, which finished second in Pool B with a 3-2 record, tied the game at 8-8 with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Denville took a 9-8 lead in the top of the sixth on a home run by Brosius, but Par-Troy scored a run in the bottom of the inning on a single, walk and an error to force extra innings.
Once again, Denville scored a single run when Chapman singled and Matt Tavarone and Brian Chegwidden walked to load the bases and Champman scored when Borowiec reached on an error.
There was still another comeback left in Par-Troy West's bag, however, as the score was tied on two singles and a double and, after an intentional walk loaded the bases, another single drove in the game-winning run and ended the game.
Grader, Tavarone and Ryan Chegwidden shared the pitching duties for Denville.

Denville loses district final game to RT-National

DENVILLE - The Denville 12-year-old All-Stars, who finished 4-1 in pool play to advance to the eight-team double-elimination portion of the District One Little League Baseball Tournament, suffered a 15-5 defeat at the hand of Rockaway Township National in a game played at Peterson Field in Rockaway Township on Thursday, July 8.
Denville returns to action on with a 7:30 p.m. game against Par-Troy West on Friday, July 9, at Gardner Field here. The winner moves on to a 5 p.m. Sunday, July 11, game at a site to be determined while the losing team is eliminated from further play in the tournament.
"We knew they had a big and powerful team and they got to us right away with five runs in the first inning," said Denville manager Randy Weick. "They finished with 14 hits, three of them home runs."
Denville scored single runs in the second and third innings without the benefit of a base hit and got its only two hits of the game in the top of the fifth inning when it scored three times.
Michael Chapman reached on an error and Alex Borowiec and Tyler Brosius each drew one-out walks to load the bases. Justin Weick followed with a two-run single and Ryan Chegwidden added an RBI single before the third out was made.
Rockaway Township National continued its heavy hitting by adding four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to put a halt to the game because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Denville moves out of pool play with 4-1 record

DENVILLE - The Denville 12s All-Star baseball team enter the District Finals phase of the 2010 District One Little League Baseball Tournament with its pitching in order -- and the bats seem to be in pretty good shape, too.
Denville beat Rockaway Township American, 11-0, in four innings to complete its Pool B schedule with a 4-1 record and a second-place finish behind pool champion Roxbury National (5-0). The top two teams in each pool moved on to the District Finals, an eight-team, double-elimination competition that will decide the District One champion.
Morristown American (4-1) and Par-Troy West (3-2) are the top two finishers in Pool A; Rockaway Township National (4-0) and Par-Troy East (3-1) advanced out of Pool C; and Morristown National (4-0) and Randolph West (3-1) finished 1-2 in Pool D.
Denville opens play in the district finals on Thursday, July 8, with a 7:30 p.m. game  against Rockaway Township National at Peterson Field in Rockaway Township.
With Denville having clinched second-place in pool play going into the game against Rockaway Township American on Monday, July 7, at Peterson Field, Denville manager Randy Weick still had some specific goals in mind for his team.
"We didn't want to overwork any of our pitchers," Weick said after the game. "We wanted our hitters to be aggressive and, of course, we wanted to win the game."
Denville came through on all counts each of the three pitchers finished with pitch counts fewer than 35 as they combined to hold Rockaway Township (1-4) to one hit. The trio finished with a combined 10 strikeouts, one walk and one hit batsman in the mercy-rule shortened four-inning game.
Ryan Chegwidden worked the first two innings and struck out five; John Grader pitched the third and fanned two; and Tyler Brosius pitched the fourth and gave up the hit - a single - and walked a batter and hit another to load the bases before striking out the next batter - his third of the inning - to end the threat.
On offense, Denville jumped out to a 7-0 lead after its first at-bat and finished with a nine-hit attack that featured a 3-for-3 performance by Justin Weick, who drove in three runs with two doubles and a single and scored a run.
Tyler Brosius was 1-for-3 with a two-run double in the first inning; Dillon Sinegra was also 1-for-3 and scored a run; Alex Borowiec was 1-for-3, a two-run double in the first inning, and also scored once; Ryan Washington was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored; Grader was was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored; and Michael Chapman singled in his only official at-bat and later scored a run.

Weick 5-hitter helps Denville clinch pool title

DENVILLE - It didn't take long for the Denville 12-year-old All-Stars to clinch the Pool B title in the District One Little League Baseball Tournament when they took on Hanover at Black Brook Park in Hanover Township on Friday, July 2.
Denville won, 3-1, in a game that was completed in less than an hour-and-a-half.
Winning pitcher Justin Weick threw only 69 pitches in a six-inning, complete-game performance. Hanover made the only error of the game. There were no walks issued by either Weick or either of the two Hanover pitchers. Each team had five hits. Denville scored one run in each of three innings and, in the three innings Denville did not score, the side was retired in order.
Weick struck out five batters and the only he allowed came in Hanover's last at-bat when Charlie Ruegger homered with two out. Weick got the next batter to fly out and the game ended.
The victory gave Denville a 3-1 Pool B record and a spot in the upcoming eight-team double-elimination portion of the tournament featuring the two top teams from each of the four pools in the tournament. Denville plays its final pool game on Tuesday, July 6, against Rockaway Township American (1-3) in a 7 p.m. game at Peterson Field in Rockaway Township.
Roxbury National is 4-0 and has the Pool B top spot nailed down and Denville, even if it should lose its final pool game, will finish second in the pool standings because of the first tie-breaker rule -- head-to-head competition. Denville has already beaten Tri-Town and Hanover, the only other two teams in Pool B that could finish with a 3-2 record. A Denville victory and Roxbury loss in their last pool games would favor Roxbury in the tie-break because Roxbury defeated Denville earlier in the tournament.
Denville took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ryan Chegwidden led off with a single and his cousin Brian Chegwidden drove him home with a double.
It became 2-0 in the third inning when Ryan Washington singled, took second on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Tyler Brosius.
Denville scored its final run in the top of the sixth when Brosius led off he inning with a single, tagged up and moved to second after the catch of Dillon Sinegra's long flyout to right field, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored when Weick grounded out.
After Weick retired the side in the first inning, Hanover managed to put runners on base in each of the remaining innings but could score only on Ruegger's sixth-inning homer.
Weick stranded one runner in the second inning; allowed a two-out single in the third but struck out the next batter; Ruegger singled with one out in the fourth but Weick got the next two batters on popups; Weick gave up a leadoff single in the fifth before retiring the next three batters on a grounder to second, a strikeout, and a grounder to short.
Ruegger's two-out homer in the sixth may have spoiled Weick’s shutout but it didn't spoil the after-game get-together at Denville manager Randy Weick's home, where the new pool champs celebrated with -- what else, a pool party.

Brosius slam, Tavarone relief bring down Tri-Town

DENVILLE - When you're held to one hit, it had better be a good one.
Tyler Brosius made that point loud and clear when he belted a bases-loaded home run a five-run second inning to spark Denville to a 7-4 victory over Tri-Town in a District One 12s Little League Baseball Tournament Pool B game played at Gardner Field on Wednesday, June 30.
It was the only hit that Denville got off Tri-Town pitching for the entire game.
When Tri-Town scored three in the top of the third inning to pull to within a run at 5-4, Matthew Tavarone came in to pitch in relief of starter Ryan Chegwidden and proceed to pitch three hitless shutout innings the rest of the way to preserve the victory.
Tri-Town took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single, hit batsman and an error.
Ryan Chegwidden, Michael Chapman and Tavarone opened Denville's second inning with walks to load the bases and John Grader reached on an error as Chegwidden scored to tie the game at 1-1.
The next two Denville batters struck out, but Brosius saved the day with his home run well over the fence in center field to give Denville a 5-1 lead, a lead that it never lost in improving its Pool B record to 2-1.
After Tri-Town pulled to with a run with a three run, five-hit third inning, Denville added two insurance runs when Alex Borowiec, batting with the bases loaded, reached base on a throwing error as two Denville runs scored.
The rest was up to Tavarone and he didn't disappoint, completing his three-inning shutout performance with two more hitless innings.
Denville, Tri-Town and Hanover are each 2-1 in Pool B and trail unbeaten (3-0) pool leader Roxbury National by one game. The two top finishers in the six-team pool move on to the eight-team, double-elimination portion of the tournament.
Denville visits Hanover for a 6 p.m. game at Black Brook Park and Roxbury National plays Tri-Town at Pepe Field in Boonton Township for a 6 p.m. game on Friday, July 2, in games that should go a long way in clearing up the top of the standings.

Roxbury Naitonal out-homers Denville to win 9-4

DENVILLE - Roxbury National had five and Denville had two and that's the story in Roxbury's 9-4 victory over Denville in a Pool B game in the District One Little League 12s Baseball Tournament at Roxbury's Kiwanis Park on Sunday, June 27.
Roxbury National belted five home runs - two solo shots in the first inning and two two-run blasts in the third - to hand Denville (1-1) its first pool defeat. Roxbury National (2-0) beat Hanover, 12-2, in its first pool game on Saturday, June 26.
After Roxbury National took a 2-0 first-inning lead, Denville came back with a little long-ball of its own and scored three times in the second. John Grader homered after Michael Chapman was hit by a pitch and Dillon Sinegra accounted for the other run with an RBI double.
Roxbury National showed its power again, however, as the home team regained the lead for good with a four-run third inning with two more home runs the big hits.
Denville was held scoreless until the sixth and final inning when Brian Chegwidden powered a solo home run out of the park for the game's final run.
Sinegra had two of Denville's six hits, finishing 2-for-3 with double and an RBI; Tyler Brosius was 1-for-3; Ryan Chegwidden was 1-for-3; and Brian Chegwidden and Grader each homered in finishing 1-for-3 nights.
"Roxbury has some good power hitters and they were certainly on target tonight," said Denville manager Randy Weick after the game. "We'll have to regroup now a little, that's all."
Denville's next game is against Tri-Town on Wednesday, June 30, at Gardner Field at 7 p.m.

Weick, Sinegra, Chegwidden lead way in opener

DENVILLE - Winning pitcher Justin Weick allowed one run and drove in four and Dillon Sinegra and Ryan Chegwidden each added two RBIs when the Denville 12s All-Star baseball team beat Morris Plains, 12-1, in a Little League Baseball District One Tournament Pool B opener played at Gardner Field here on Saturday, June 26.
Denville will get right back out onto action on Sunday, June 27, when it travels to Roxbury for a 6 p.m. game against Roxbury National at Kiwanis Field No. 2.
Weick gave up one run on two first-inning doubles and then allowed but four singles the rest of the way. Morris Plains had two hits in each of the second and fourth innings, but Weick worked out of both jams without a run being scored. He struck out four and did not walk a man.
Weick also helped himself out at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a homer, double, single, 4 RBIs and three runs scored. Ryan Chegwidden was also 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sinegra finished 2-for-3 with two singles, two RBIs, a walk, and two runs scored; his RBIs came in the bottom of the fourth and gave Denville a 10-run lead and ended the game because of the tournament's 10-run mercy rule.
After Morris Plains took its 1-0 lead in its first at-bat, Denville came right back with two runs of its own in its half of the first inning when Tyler Brosius led off with a single, took second on a groundout by Sinegra and scored on a single by Weick with Weick taking second on the throw. Ryan Chegwidden followed with a single to drive in Weick and Denville, ahead 2-1, had a lead it never lost.
Getting six of its 15 hits in the second inning, Denville took a commanding lead by scoring six runs. Brosius and Sinegra singled and Weick followed with a two-run double. Alex Borowiec, Ryan Chegwidden and Brian Chegwidden each had RBI singles before the inning was finished.
Weick hit his homer - a bases-empty shot - in Denville's two-run third inning. Matt Tavarone had scored the first run of the inning when he singled and eventually scored when Sinegra, who had walked, was caught in a rundown between second and third.
In the fourth, John Grader and Matt Tavarone singled and, after each moved up a base, both runners scored and the game ended when Sinegra followed with his two-run single.
Brosius and Tavarone each had multiple-hit games for Denville, Brosius finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored and Tavarone going 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Borowiec was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored; Brian Chegwidden was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored; Grader was 1-for-1 with a runs scored; Michael Chapman drew a walk; and Ryan Washington and Jeff Wisniewski were also in the Denville lineup.
