St. Clement wins, 53-34,
to stay unbeaten at 5-0

ROCKAWAY TWP.. - The St. Clement 8th grade boys varsity used a balanced attack to defeat Our Lady Star of Hopatcong, 53-34, in an Upper Morris CYO Basketball League game played at Hopatcong High School on Sunday, Dec. 5.
The win was the fifth of the season for St. Clement without a loss, leaving the team 3-0 in the league.
Our Lady (2-1) took an early 4-2 lead but St. Clement answered by scoring the last 15 points of the quarter to take a commanding 17-4 lead. A 10-6 second period gave St. Clement a 27-10 halftime lead and then the winners put away the game in the third period when they went on a 19-6 run.
Michael Murphy led the scoring for St. Clement with 11 points. Matt Toohey and Matt Mitoratonda each finished with nine points; Ryan Bornemann had eight points; Derek Todaro and Kevin Cassidy each scored six points; and Austin Morris rounded out the St. Clement attack with four points.
St. Clement has a bye this coming weekend and will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 19, when it faces St. Mark's of Long Valley in a 12:15 game at Sandshore Middle School. The game will be a rematch of this year's St. Clement Turkey Shoot championship game that was won by St. Clement, 48-39.

Fourth-quarter free throw shooting keys win
ROCKAWAY TWP. - Clutch free-throw shooting in the final quarter enabled St. Clement 8th grade boys varsity to hold off St. Therese, 47-42, in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at Connery Hall at St. Clement on Sunday, Nov. 28.
St. Clement (4-0 overall, 2-0 in the league) took a 33-31 lead into the fourth period and won the game on the free throw line by shooting 8-for-14 while St. Therese was shooting 1-for-8 from the line.
Ryan Bornemann was St. Clement top scorer with 14 points with Matt Toohey and Billy Morin close behind, each with 13 points. Michael Murphy finished with five points and Kevin Cassidy had two to complete the scoring.
Cassidy led the team in rebounds with eight; Morin and Toohey each finished with six; and Matt Mitoratonda had four.

St. Clement wins Turkey Shootout championship
ROCKAWAY TWP. -- The St. Clement 8th grade boys varsity won the championship of its own Turkey Shootout Basketball Tournament by defeated St. Mark, 48-39, in the championship game after having to work overtime to edge St. Catherine, 53-52, in the opening-round game.
The four-team tournament was held at Connery Hall at St. Clement on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 23-24.
St. Clement (3-0) sealed its victory over St. Mark in the title game by shooting 8-for-10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, a quarter where St. Clement outscored St. Mark, 14-8.
Billy Morin's 11 points led a St. Clement balanced scoring attack. Matt Toohey and Ryan Bornemann each added nine points; Matt Mitoratonda had eight points; Michael Murphy finished with five points; Austin Morris had four points; and Kevin Cassidy had two points to round out the scoring.
In the first game, Toohey's 3-point field goal with 11 seconds to go in overtime gave St. Clement a four-point lead, a margin that St. Clement needed because St. Catherine nailed a 3-point field goal at the buzzer to create the final one-point margin of victory.
Toohey led St. Clement with 17 points and added five rebounds. Billy Morin and Ryan Bornemann also had double-figures with Morin finishing with 13 points and Bornemann adding 12.
Murphy finished with seven points and a team-high seven rebounds and Mitoratonda rounded out the scoring with four points.

St. Clement uses 23-0 run in 2nd quarter to win opener
ROCKAWAY TWP. - The St. Clement 8th grade boys varsity team opened its 2010-11 season with a 53-20 victory over Holy Family in an Upper Morris County CYO Basketball League game played at Connery Hall at St. Clement Church here on Sunday, Nov. 21.
The teams were tied at 13-13 after the first quarter of play, but St. Clement went on a 23-0 run in the second quarter to put the game out of reach.
Matt Toohey led St. Clement in scoring with 18 points and also added five rebounds. Billy Morin finished with 11 points and five rebounds; Austin Morris had seven points; Ryan Bornemann had six points; Derek Todaro had five points; and Bobby Grubel, Michael Murphy and Kevin Cassidy each finished with two points.
Cassidy also finished with a team-high eight rebounds for St. Clement.
