MK GIRLS
D'Achille wins
individual title;
Eagles run 2d

    DENVILLE - Morris Knolls High School senior Diana D'Achille made her last race at Freedom Park one to remember as she cruised home with the individual championship at the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference's American Division Girls Cross-Country Championships on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
    D'Achille covered the 3.1 miles in 18:36.46 with Randolph junior Joelle Amaral of Randolph - whom some had touted as the possible champion - a distant second with a time of 18:46.88.
    D'Achille and Amaral ran together for the first half of the race before D'Achille pulled away and steadily increased her lead to win by almost 10 seconds.
    The Lady Eagles' top runner all season, D'Achille was hobbled by injury and slowed by illness as a junior and did not compete at Freedom Park at all, making Tuesday's championship run all the more special to her.
    "This makes up for last year," D'Achille was quoted as saying after the race. "It's a great feeling to do so well here this year after not being able to run last season."
    Randolph put four runners into the top ten (2-3-6-8) to win the team championship with 32 points while runnerup Roxbury finished with 67 points.
    Morris Knolls was a close third with 71 points while Morristown (79 points), Vernon (134), West Morris (146) and Mount Olive (167) rounded out the seven-team field.
    Freshman Julia Strother was the second Lady Eagle to cross the line, finishing 10th in the field of 47 with a time of 19:54.50.
    Sophomore Alyssa Brindle was 12th in 20:00.60; freshman Heather Weick was 21st in 21:18.26; and freshman Priscilla Ortiz was 27th in 21:30.79 to round out the Knolls team scoring.
    Sophomore Kiki Baldassari and junior Melanie Lamac were the sixth and seventh Lady Eagle runners with Baldassari finishing 36th in 22:26.96 and Lamac 37th with a time of 22:26.95.
